Cherry-Almond Loaf

3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup whole maraschino cherries -- well-drained
2 tablespoons margarine or butter -- softened
3 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon dry milk
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
1/2 cup slivered almonds

Make 1 1/2-pound recipe for bread machines that use 3 cups flour, or make 1-pound recipe for bread machines that use 2 cups flour.

Measure carefully, placing all ingredients except almonds in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Add almonds at the Raisin/Nut signal or 5 to 10 minutes before last kneading cycle ends.

Select Sweet or Basic/White cycle. Use Medium or Light crust color. Do not use delay cycles. Remove baked bread from pan and cool on wire rack.






My Mother's Recipe Box

Remember the days when cookbooks weren't so readily available, and you or your mother relied on only one or two different cookbooks for cooking all of your family's meals? I still have my mother's old cookbooks, as well as my grandmother's. Each one is worn from age and use--if you flip through the tattered pages it is obvious which recipes were turned to time and time again. These cookbooks will always number among my most precious treasures.

When our mothers wanted to try new recipes, they most likely didn't run out and buy new cookbooks. They often didn't have the extra money to spend, and often there weren't very many to choose from. So where did they get new recipes? From each other.

Sangria Blanca

1 orange, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

6 tbsp (90 mL) orange liqueur

2 tbsp (30 mL) sugar

1 cup (250 mL) Ocean SprayŽ White Cranberry Cocktail

1 cup (250 mL) white wine

Sliced citrus fruit and strawberries

Place orange and lemon slices in a large bowl. Add orange liqueur and sugar. Mash and stir with a wooden spoon to release juices and dissolve sugar. Add white cranberry cocktail and wine. Remove fruit slices from mixture, squeezing to release all the juices. Serve in large glasses filled with White Cranberry Rocks* or ice cubes, slices of citrus fruit and strawberries. Makes 4 servings.

Coffee cupping is a method to compare the different characteristics of a coffee bean. Cupping lets us compare different coffees against each other to evaluate the uniqueness between them. This information can give us a better understanding of each different region and their basic tastes.

Having a coffee cupping party at home is a great way to socialize and enjoy coffee while evaluating and sharing thoughts on the different blends. It can be fun and a sense of adventure discovering flavors and nuances you never thought existed in a cup of coffee.
