Others say...
"Amazing!" If you are looking for a slow cooker book that is simple and delicious, you have found it! "...And I have only just read it.............." Haven't cooked any of the recipes from this new aquisition just yet, but reading through the first 70 or so pages (I read cookbooks like some read novels), I see that the recipes are not just your average re-hashed beef stew, chili, chicken soup fare. Having said that, I did spot all these classics in one form or another, but not the same ol' boring versions as so many slow cooker books are crammed full of. I am the type of cook that just uses recipes (generally speaking) as jumping off points to the actual end result, and these look to be particularly inspiring. Don't know how useful my review is, since I haven't actually TASTED anything from the book, but what I've seen so far sure sounds yummy..................... "Great tastes!" Nicely written recipies, easy to understand and no fancy ingredients or techniques needed. Some recipies take longer due to pre-cooking browning, etc., but worth the extra effort. "Very good cook book, worth acquiring" The layout in my '98 paperback edition is quaint, at best, but the information is top-notch, an interesting assortment of dishes, most of which I'm interested in making. While this book isn't as pretty as some others, the information is unique, I like Rick Rodgers' writing style -- lots of useful information and food combinations I don't imagine that I'd have ever thought of. I'd like to see this cook book updated, I'd buy another copy. It would be really great if it had a spiral binding, so that it would lay flat -- I love details like that, making things truly useful. This is a good cook book, buy it! "A Surprisingly Wonderful Cookbook" I bought this book not expecting it to be as good as the reviews I read here. After all, I couldn't imagine yet another crockpot cookbook to be different from the 6 other crockpot cookbooks I own...but I was wrong. The first dish I tried, Bistro Beef Bourguignon, was simply fabulous (even my fussy teenage son liked it) and our house was filled with the most mouthwatering aroma. I agree with the other reviewers that you'll spend a fair amount of time putting everything together before you actually create the finished product, but it's time well spent. Too, you'll probably need to cook these recipes on the weekend, as they're not of the throw-everything-in-the-pot-and-walk-away kind. If you enjoy cooking and eating truly wonderful meals, this is the best book of its kind out there.

What our customer's say! "No Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup!", This is my "go-to" cookbook when I want to use my slow cooker. I never imagined that the slow cooker could be used to prepare such impressive food. Everything I have made from here has come out mouth-watering and delicious. Yes, there is a bit more work involved, but I would say no more than 1/2 hour's prep time in most all of these recipes. And the time spent is well worth the end result. If all you want to do is dump some ingredients into the slow cooker, turn it on, and be satisfied with ingredients like frozen veggies and canned soup, then there are cookbooks out there for you. If you want to cook real meals with little fuss and great results, this is one cookbook I stand by and highly recommend. ""Meals That Cook Themselves?"...No. Meals to DIE for? Yes!", This book really got me excited about using my new slow cooker! True, the meals don't exactly "cook themselves," but boy, are they fantastic! Rick Rodgers really knows his stuff! His comments are both entertaining and insightful, and his recipes are superb. Thanks to Rick, I have come to view my slow cooker not so much as a time-saving device, but as more of a general cooking appliance, and a great one. If you want to get the absolute best possible results from your slow cooker, this book is a MUST! "Best slow cooker cookbook out there!", OK, I can't cook.I'm successful at many things. Cooking is NOT one of them.I've tried everything, including the grill. Did you know sausages can burst into flames like Yule logs, and continue burning on the plate? My husband took pictures.I discovered the crockpot. And cookbooks that called for cream of mushroom soup as a main ingrediant. This cookbook arrived yesterday. I examined it. Mr. Rodgers made the recipes sound doable. I decided to try the beef bourguinnone. The prep time took 45 munites. I needed a sweatband by the time I was done. I followed his instructions religiously. I handled a whisk! I also made the garlic mashed potatoes with carrots. The end result was incredible. My husband almost cried. My son asked who I had gotten to deliver the food. Wiseguy. I felt euphoric!! So, to anyone who says these recipes take more time, I say.. WHO CARES!! The meal was to die for, and best of all... I MADE IT!!! THANKS MR. Rodgers! I'm on a roll. My whole family thanks you. Seriously. You have no idea. "The How to Stretch Your Food Budget Book", This book is wonderful! This book gives excellent instructions. The Good Man/Woman's Chicken is so easy and the ingredients are so cheap. That meal cost me $2.18 to buy the chicken and it lasted me four days! Now that is economy! When the food budget is tight slow cooker cooking is a Godsend! I would also recommend getting the OXO fat separator with this cookbook! Skimming fat has been a chore for me. "Best Slow Cooker to Date For Me, Possibly You", Why is this the best to date for me on slow cooking? Because he adds some outstanding extras that others don't: browning, broiling, sauteeing meats first; skimming fat and reducing sauces at end, etc. Also, his variety and sophistication of recipes is outstanding for my tastes. Feast on likes of: Short Ribs with Garden Patch Horseradish Sauce; Pork, Port and Chestnut Ragout; Chicken, Tomato and Tortilla Soup; Erna's Sauerbraten; Chicken with Mushrooms and Artichokes in Red Wine Soup; Turkey Breast Saltimbocca; Pear and Hazelnut Brown Betty. 160 delectable offerings with the normal wide menu offering from Appetizers to Desserts. Only downer is no color photos, but this tends to drive the purchase price down which is nice. A keeper for the slow cooker who wants to go a step up in his offerings. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Real food, really simple", I grew up in the 1970s eating dinners from the Crock Pot prepared in the morning to be ready when my parents came home from work. My mother was picky, she had only a handful of recipes she liked, because back then far too many recipes called for raw meat dumped in with a can of whatever soup and combined with frozen vegetables. But there were a few, a very few, that with some extra effort yielded wonderful results. This cookbook takes my mom's view on Crock Pot cooking & makes it a real art. If you like those super simple stews with canned soup, then this is not the book for you. But if you like tasty soups, stews and dinners, then this is one of the best out there. This book has earned a place on my "use it all the time shelf." Sure, as some people have pointed out, it does take more time. Typically, it takes me 20-30 minutes to prepare the meal & put it on to cook. But the results are fantastic and the variety is wonderful. Finally, I read with surprise the reviews that said that for their "meat and potatoes" families there was nothing here. My family loves the Pot Roast, Good Woman's Chicken, and chili recipes. Yes, there are many other recipes that are more ethnic or unusual, but the basics are here also & they are better than ever before. "Classic Cooking", I really love this cookbook. This is the first cookbook I've seen to give a cheap cut of beef -the bottom round- a star position. Most books that feature pot-roasts and braises use the "chuck". I think he's really taking a chance by exploring this cut of meat so thoroughly. It must take more skill to get the bottom round to be really succulent and tasty. The techniques here are classic but applied to a modern appliance. I hope he does a book devoted to another forgotten cut of meat: the eye of the round. "Not exactly a "one-pot stop."", Don't expect to combine recipe ingredients in the slow cooker and walk away. More "pre-cooking" is involved, most often browning beef, but in some cases dirtying numerous other pots as well. For the most part, the end results are pleasant, but often not worth the extra effort (and, in some cases, it seems as though utilizing non-slow-cooking methods would work just as well, if not better.) "BUY THIS COOKBOOK!!", I bought 3 slow cooker cookbooks and this is the only one I use! These are gourmet meals that take just 20-30 minutes to prep, into the crockpot they go and 8 hours later your tastebuds are in heaven. I've made the caponata, Athenian shrimp in tomato and feta sauce over orzo, North Carolina pulled pork, and the corned beef recipe for St. Patty's Day. Every recipe was a total winner! Spend the $10. You won't be sorry. "The Best of All", So I bought a new crockpot after 20 years of not using one. I went to B&N and looked at every slow cooker book on the shelf, and brought home about 6 of the ones that looked the best, including this one, which has turned out to be my favorite of them all in terms of the recipes. The prep time is often a lot more than with other slow cooker books. But the returns of some extra work are enormous in terms of flavor. The philosophy here is not to have prep speed a priority, it's not the "dump everything in and cook all day" type of cookbook. The goal is to use certain cooking principles (pre-browning meat and sometimes veggies, etc.) and then take advantage of the slow cooking technique to bring out all the flavors. My top favorite recipe is the exquisite Bistro Beef Bourguignon, and the prep time took a full hour. But oh, my, the taste of this dish is not to be believed and this is a dish worthy of serving to guests. So what if it took an hour? You do that in the morning, and by evening you have a meal fit for a king! I take notes on and "rate" every recipe I try, and this book is getting filled with superlatives. I haven't made an uninteresting recipe yet....everything has been delicious and worth making over and over again...the Farmhouse Beef & Vegetable Stew, Beef Stroganoff, Summer Garden Vegetarian Minestrone (I made the Vegetarian Stock the day before in the crockpot, and used it the following day as the base for the Summer Garden Minestrone recipe...fabulous!), Little Italy Chicken Cacciatore, Moroccan Chicken & Vegetable Stew....well, the recipe list goes on and on. I highly recommend this book as an addition to your slow cooker cookbook library. Like with me, it will undoubtedly become the one you reach for when you want to make an exceptional crockpot meal. ![]() |
