Others say...
"Great recipies, but very time consumeing" The recipes were good, but they required a lot of prep time...much of which with a new little one in the house, I didn't have! I use it a lot more now that she is older and I have more time! "Wonderful, Easy-to-Use Resource" My 7-month-old started on "Stage 1" solid foods at 4 months, but they can be kind of watery. Making food homemade is not only fun, but easy, and you can test out different flavor combinations without having to throw away food (fruit purees can be used in dessert recipes for you, for example). My baby loves everything I've made and really enjoys homemade peas pureed over the yucky, army-green store bought peas! "Love this book! First time mom" I am a new mom and wanted to try out making baby food. This book shows the basics (carrot puree) all the way up to more exotic foods. I have to say making your own food is so easy and so much cheaper! AND I am not a cook - ask my husband! "Tasty Purees" We were pureeing fruit for my daughter before we purchased this book. But the advantage to this book is having other options for bigger meals and what types of food to combine into one meal. We have tried several of the recipes and all have been very simple to make. The one-pot chicken has onions, sweet potatoes, carrots and chicken mixed together. My daughter had not tried chicken or onions before this meal but seems to enjoy it. I have a few small complaints about the book: 1) It doesn't list temperatures for cooking 2) I would have liked to see more recipes that included herbs and spices 3) Many recipes include strawberries, which are not recommended for children until age 1 Overall, I am very pleased with this book. It has encouraged us to make new foods for my daughter who seems to enjoy whatever we place in front of her. I would (and have) recommend this book to any parent of infant children. "Great Book on Infant Nutrition" Okay, it's important to bear in mind that Annabel Karmel is British - she lives and works in Britain, where child feeding guidelines are obviously different. This information is clearly stated in the book. I don't think she has disdain for AAP (American Academy of Pediatric) guidelines ... not everything revolves around America, folks! So keep that in mind as you consider which recipes to make for your baby. That said, much of the nutritional information in the book is solid, and the recipes are indeed easy, healthy and delicious. I've used it again and again, and I love it - and so does my baby.

What our customer's say! "We get it -- breastfeeding is best -- can we get to the recipes now?", The book's ok -- the recipes ok. But what began to drive me crazy is the constant drumbeat of 'breast is best'. No kidding, I know that. I have a baby and I've heard all of it. I'm so OVER all of it and ready to begin introducing my little one to solid food. Let's just stick with that, ok? That's the title of the book, right? "Ok book", A little disappointing. The recipes are not as simple as I thought. Some are not purees. I will use ideas from the book but probably won't do the recipes as described. "great buy", This book is exactly what I wanted for my new baby - an easy set of directions for making various baby foods, using fresh produce and no preservatives. "Excellent Recipes - My Son Loves It All", My sisters each have 2 children and none of them LIKE to eat healthy food. I have witnessed more meal time battles than I ever cared to. So when my husband and I had our first child this year, I was determined that we'd do whatever we could to avoid raising a picky eater. My son is almost six months old (doctor said it was okay to start him on solid food at 4 1/2 months). He has tried everything in the age appropriate section and most of the items in the 6-7 months section and he loves them! I can't shovel the food in fast enough. He even loves the fish and vegetables with cheese sauce. Note to people who are concerned about the cow's milk: Ms. Karmel does state that cow's milk by itself should not be given to an infant, but that it has been shown to be okay to use in cooking other foods. If you're still leery about that, keep in mind that most of the recipes don't use cow's milk. I always try everything myself before I give it to my son and the recipes actually taste really good. In fact, we all love Cinderella's pumpkin (I've made it as a soup). I'm really excited to get to try the recipes for older kids too - they look fun and healthy. My favorite part is that I'm not trying to "sneak" anything into my baby's food. He's just learning that healthy food actually tastes good. Thank you Annabel Karmel! "Excellent Ideas", This book is filled with some great money saving ideas for homemade baby food. I found it very helpful when planning meals for my child. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Like it a lot", This is a good reference for where to start. I was looking for the basics of what to start when, how to prepare each item (steam, boil, no cook, etc.) and a little detail about what combinations work. This is exactly what I got. I agree with other reviewers that a few of her recommendations are against pediatrician recommendations but I suspect that anyone who actually takes the time to make their own baby food, is likely to do more reading and research than this book alone in addition to talking with their pediatrician. "Recomends for every mom!!!", This book is a must have for all moms! I went to work right a way once I got the book. My daughter (4 months) really enjoyed watching me make her baby food. Annabel Karmel is brilliant! I have other books of hers and love them. She has great ideas for all ages and makes it fun to provide the best for your child. There is no need to go out and buy all kinds of equipment. She makes it very simple. "Good recipes but not for ages given!!!", I got this book but DO NOT believe the ages! Babies ARE NOT supposed to have eggs before 1 year and she says 6-7 months. There are awesome recipes I will use though just not when she says. Also it says you MUST introduce solids at 6 months and really you don't have to in the first year if you're breastfeeding some babies aren't interested! The signs for being ready are contrary to what any nutritionist will tell you decreasing time at the breast or more frequent feedings could mean a growth spurt otr a nursing strike or something else! The true signs are that they are 6 months or older, can sit with a little support, keep their bottom lip out when a spoon is put in, and doesn't push food or spoon out with tongue. These aren't even mentioned! "Great Book!", This book is easy and simple to follow. Meals are easy to prepare and cook. I can normally prepare a "batch" of one meal and let simmer or cook while preparing dinner for the rest of my family. I like that the recipes do not have lots of ingredients in them which makes them so simple. Layout of the book is great and pictures are nice too. Great book overall. Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook (Organic) I also like this other book. "I LOVE this book! ", I absolutely love this book! I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy making my son's baby food from scratch. The recipes are easy to follow with additional tips for substitutions and nutritional information. And they taste great! My son has loved everything I've made so far. I also appreciated the general information about starting solids at the beginning of the book. I really like the photographs and layout of the book, too. I realize that may not be as important to mention, but I like a cookbook that shows me what the dish is supposed to look like. I also purchased another baby food book for the blender and I haven't used that one nearly as much. ![]() |
