Others say...
"what? rice again?!!...............you bet!!" i just wanted to add my two cents to help offset some of the negative reviews. i bought this particular cooker due to the positive reviews both here and on some other websites. i wanted a cooker due to being tired of cooking potatoes with most meals and getting tired of them. i received the unit very quickly and immediately tried it out. i wanted to try brown rice first, so i washed it briefly and put it in the machine to cook. shortly, a mass of bubbles filled below the lid and started 'sputtering' through the steam hole. not happy about the mess it was making, i endured it and ended up eating some fairly good rice with my first meal. i thought "yeah, they were right, it's messy, what a bummer". so, round two and three, i cooked some more, this time trying varieties of white rice and both resulting in a repeat of the first messy attempt, along with some 'browning' of the rices on the bottom of the pan. again i thought "this is no fun, friends or guests are going to think this is a piece of junk". by this time, i had been reading quite a bit on the 'net about rice, and concluded that a more thorough rinsing of the grains were in order, so my fourth round started off with such, along with an accurate measurement of rice and water, and....a pat of butter thrown in......i thought maybe it might help it from sticking or browning in the bottom. the result......perfect rice! i'm now making that my preparation regimen and i'm getting better results each time. i'm convinced that the errors others are reporting are not the machine's fault and i'm also convinced that, like most other machines, the user needs to figure out how to use it. in a short time a person should be able to make perfect rice repeatedly. to help the bottom-sticking, i'm also now opening the lid and giving a couple of stirs a couple of times through the cooking cycle. also note, like others have said that washing the rice is a must (maybe up to and including soaking, but i haven't tried that yet), as you are washing off a lot of the starch that helps make the mess in the first place. take note of the type of rice you buy. some rices have been stripped of their vitamins and have them 'sprayed back on', the bags will have instructions on them telling you to NOT wash the rice. i would avoid those types. i have yet to steam veggies or whole meals in it, but i'm sure i can get good results from it just as well. good luck and good health! "Second Zojirushi, great product" This is an upgrade of a smaller capacity Zojirushi I bought through Amazon a year or two ago. I loved it, and the only reason I am replacing it is that my brother loved it as well. Since we have a family of six and eat rice every day, I figured I would just buy a bigger one and give him the smaller. He is happy, I am happy. My husband is Thai, so we cook only Jasmine rice. To make Jasmine, I use the ratio of one provided cup full of rice to one and a quarter provided cup of water, and it comes up perfect. Definitely rinse your rice, otherwise you will have white stuff spitting everywhere. Also, when the rice is finished cooking and it clicks over to warm, make sure to stir the rice first, otherwise it will brown a bit on the bottom. I have made brown rice as per the directions and it was great, though I discovered I prefer mine a little undercooked. I cannot fault this machine at all, it is a breeze to clean, doesn't take up an inordinate amount of space on my counter, and lets me get everything else done without having to risk a burnt pot on the stove. I see no need to spend more money on the fancier rice cookers with AI or fuzzy logic or whatever it is, and the price here for a basic rice cooker is even cheaper than our local Asian market for similar products. I recommend it to people all the time, and if you are like me and feel that a pot on the stove works just as well, upgrade. I still use the pot on the stove for browned rice, but if you mostly eat just plain rice like we do, you will not regret the purchase. "The Second One" My sister and I bought this model for my mom years ago and it still works without any problems. The only reason that I bought a replacement now for my mom is that the nonstick coating has finally worn out from daily wear and tear. The replacement came in last week and it's working fine. I would recommend this rice cooker without hesitation. The only thing I think might be a negative is that you have to watch the rice cooker in case it boils over. It could be the way one cook's rice. I don't know but it happens sometimes with my mom's. Though she's already got that problem under control. "Time Saver" Just received the unit from Amazon.com. First try, cooked two cups (6 OZ each) of rice and 1 pound of french cut carrots in the top tray. Carrots cut approximately 1/8 inch thick. Let it go 20 minutes after warm light went on and all was PERFECT! Gave the rice a stir and let it keep warm while the rest of dinner was being finished. Easy clean up and unit nicely made. Thank you for a Double Duty appliance!!!! The instruction books leaves a lot to be desired. Be sure to rinse your rice B4 cooking. No problem with boiling over here. "no mess, cooks rice really well" Since we eat rice practically everyday,I was looking for a rice cooker that would be easy to use, easy to clean and would cook rice in minutes. This cooker does it all, at the end of a tired day, my rice is ready within no time and the best part is that none of it sticks to the bottom of the cooker.I use my own water measure for each cup and I have had no problems and the rice turns out real nice n fluffy.Considering the price I bought it for, I would say its a super deal!

What our customer's say! "rice cooker", Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & Warmer I say its ok. It makes too many rules to make rice and to me the rice is watery. You can't put the rice in the rice maker pot and drain the rice before turning the rice maker on. you have to use their measure cup, use a separate bowl, use the measure inside the pot for water amount, the glass lid is heavy, slippery and hard to clean. I expected more simple instructions and better steamed rice. "Easy to use Rice cooker", I bought this to replace an older, smaller Salton model that worked well, but did not have replacement parts available when the silicone insert in the steam opening was lost. I wanted something to cook rice easily and larger quantities than the old one. Despite some negative reviews, this seemed to be the best choice for the price. I am not disappointed. I just add a little more liquid when cooking brown or a wild rice mixture we cook very often. No problems and the rice is just right. I'd recommend it without reservations. I also like the separate steaming basket included. A great addition!! "Very reliable (for over a decade)", I just wanted to mention that I've owned this rice cooker for 17 years (yikes!), and it works exactly the same today as it did when new. No problems at all. I use it about once a month on average, sometimes much more. I usually only make 2 or 3 cups (pre-cooked) at once. Just wanted to comment on its excellent reliability. I am not a 'foodie,' so can't discuss the finer points of the rice it makes. I just know that I like it. I only make white rice, and follow the directions (except I've never rinsed - didn't realize I was supposed to, and haven't noticed any problem with cooking or clean up or taste, so why bother). FYI It's conceivable that the model number has changed since I bought it, but my 10 cup rice cooker looks exactly like this one - same lid, same controls, same steamer basket. (I paid about fifty dollars for it at Lechmere in 1991.) "A Must Buy", I could not be happier with my Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & Warmer. You can't go wrong with this exceptional machine. You add rice (I use Jasmine), you add water, push the little lever down and about 15-20 minutes later you have tasty tasty rice. I use about a 2 cups of rice to 2 1/2 cups of water ratio. The cooker will actually turn from "Cooking" to "Keep-Warm" when the rice is done. No need to watch it; just let it do its thing. I haven't used the Steamer function as of yet, but I imagine it will be just as easy. The only down side is that it is a 10-Cup rice cooker and I doubt I'll ever use it to its full capacity. There are smaller Zojirushi models, but for the extra cash the Keep-Warm feature on this model makes it worth-while. If you want perfect rice every time get yourself a Zojirushi! "Bought this twice", I had this rice cooker before (for almost 10 years), but the pot got bent and wouldn't sit properly in the outer container, so the appliance kept popping over to the "keep warm" function and wouldn't cook. I looked at many other models before replacing it with the exact same model. It cooks my rice perfectly, every time. It's also easy to steam veggies, though I wish the capacity were a bit larger (family of 6). This new one does seem to spit a bit more fluid from the vent hole, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5. All told, I'd buy it again if I had to. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "GREAT RICE COOKER", WE HAVE HAD THIS COOKER FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND IT COOKS RICE GREAT, EASY CLEANUP, AND NO OVER FLOW OR MESS. WE HAVE ONLY USED WHITE RICE SO FAR AND WE HAVE STEAMED A COUPLE OF VEGGIES AND IT WORKED FINE. "Now anyone can make good rice", Awesome product! My previous rice cooker finally bit the dust so I had to replace it. At first I was unsure about the brand since I had never heard of it, but after researching I read and heard from people that it is "the Sony of Japan." My mother, who has made rice everyday for the last 50 years, even commented that she wouldn't mind one herself. It makes perfect rice and doesn't burn the bottom, even after it has been left to warm a few hours. I've never seen such a thing! I do rinse my rice several times in cold water, to remove excess starch that makes the rice a little sticky, so I don't know how it would perform otherwise. I haven't tried the steaming yet but I'm sure it'll be great. "great time saver for the kitchen", great rice cooker. the steamer addition is a real time saver, not to mention dish saver, as one can cook almost a full meal with just this one appliance. my roommates and i cook rice almost everyday, and this machine has really helped make that process easy and enjoyable. the only downside is occasionally water/steam will come out of the hole in the cover, resulting in a mess. this only happens when cooking a lot of rice without using the steamer, which acts like an additional layer of covering. not a problem, just something to be aware of when cooking 4+ cups of rice without steaming. overall, it's a great unit and i'd be happy to buy one again. definitely recommended! "This Rice Cooker Hits the Spot With Mr. Mom", I really like this machine. It is my second rice cooker. This model is much sturdier than my first cooker. It is very easy to use and turns out excellent rice every time that I have used it. The steamer tray works well on vegetables and does a great job on hard boiled eggs. However one draw back is that the steamer tray does not hold alot of vegetables nor will it hold 12 eggs. I usually get 11 in it. But for rice this model has come out perfect every time. Clean up is very easy and I would recommend this model to anyone in the market for a rice cooker. "good machine; DO rinse your rice", This is a good machine for the price, considering it is also a steamer, and a good one. If all you want is to make rice, any cheaper rice cooker will do. This one's for people who like to make everything in their rice cooker (which is possible in cheaper rice cookers, only there's no rack so you can't steam vegies as easily). Just wanted to respond to what Drew wrote about not having to rinse rice. Rice connoisseurs *always* rinse polished rice to rid the grains of the powder clinging to them. Whether it's talc or rice starch or glucose or whatever is immaterial. If you don't rinse the rice it will *not* have the texture prized by people who eat rice as a staple food, particularly Asians. Cooked rice should not stick together in clumps, i.e., every grain should separate easily from neighbouring grains. This is the perfect bowl of rice, not one where the starch/glucose/talc/whatever has created a film over the grains and caused them to stick to one another almost like glue. Risotto is another story altogether. If you want risotto, use Italian arbor rice, and add lots of water ... and cook it in a saucepan. ![]() |
