Others say...
"Not so bad at all!" Read the mixed reviews below but ordered anyway as this is the smallest high-end thermal. Yes, you have to pay attention until you've got the hang of it, but this model is just fine and brews a great cup of coffee quickly. The "pour" is nice and full with no spills whatsoever. The removable water basket with water filter a very nice feature. Once you learn to (1) securely snap the coffee filter holder into place by making sure either that you've folded down the edges of the paper filter (as required on most coffee makers), or making sure that you've fully positioned the gold mesh filter, and (2) properly screw and unscrew the coffee pot cap, it's a synch to use. ALSO, comes with a gold mesh filter, so don't order one separately as I did. Pre-heating the pot, as w/ most thermals, a good idea. "Not worth it..." This is the second coffee maker of this model for us. The first one was a gift and we loved it. About 2 months into use, the switch that allows you to remove the pot during brewing broke and it leaked a bit, but still made a great tasting cup of coffee in a thermal carafe. So, when we started doing our wedding registry, we decided to put this on it, thinking the broken piece was just a fluke. The second one was worse than the first. We received it for our wedding shower, used it for three weeks and came down to coffe and grinds all over the counter, in the cabinets under the counter and on the floor. The whole thing was thoroughly cleaned out, vinegar was run through it to ensure nothing was clogged. The next morning... coffee everywhere again. The snap button that holds the filter arm in place for brewing does not stay so it pops open and the water continues to flow into it and it overflows everywhere. Because it was a shower gift and not received until 2 months after it was purchased, Amazon will not take it back or replace it because it is 30 days past purchase date (even though it was a registry item). Looking back, I am sorry I ever gave this model a second chance and would not recommend it. Now we are stuck with a $100 coffee maker that worked for 3 weeks. "Just bought my second one of these..." When my girlfriend (now my wife) and I moved in together, she had one of these. I sort of adopted it. I loved it, despite a few drawbacks... namely I tend to make a mess with it. But then, I tend to make a mess with just about anything. Also, the doohickey that interrupts the brewing so you can poor a quick cup broke. I was a little disappointed, but soldiered on. It makes a damn fine pot of coffee. About a month ago I finally managed to break the Capresso Elegance after 3 years of sometimes twice-a-day use, that's at least 1800 pots of coffee. I think the heating element burned out or something. So, in an anxious state of mind I ran down to the local Starbucks and bought their featured Delonghi coffee maker, mostly because it was Italian and looked cool. This was a big mistake: I should have known better. Having lived in Italy, it's clear that the Italians DO NOT KNOW THE FIRST THING ABOUT MAKING AMERICAN COFFEE. Why should they? They have their own lovely coffee tradition... The Delonghi made weak, anemic coffee, it was embarassingly bad. My wife refused to drink it. Not willing to admit that I'd made a mistake, I stuck up for it - but really, I was just fooling myself. Finally, we decided to get another Capresso Elegance (actually this was a unilateral move on my wife's part... I was still in defensive man mode). We just couldn't live with mediocre coffee, life's too short. As I write this, I'm enjoying my first cup; and after a month of crappy coffee, I was inspired to come here and to write this review. This is a great cup of coffee. It's strong and flavorful. I know these coffee beans well, they're the same ones we brew at our coffeeshop with our very expensive professional coffeemaker, and I can honestly say that this Capresso does them justice. So, it's not a perfect mechanism. But it does the job very, very well. "Awful customer service/terrible product" I would not buy a Capresso product again because of their TERRIBLE customer service. My coffee maker failed to make hot coffee, and the company wouldn't do anything other than blame me---user error!! Fortuantely, the seller (Plum's Cooking) was fabulous and agreed to take the coffee maker back and refund my money. I would shop with Plum's again, but not for a Capresso product. Be warned!! "Cheap Coffeemaker=Expensive Coffee" I purchased this coffee maker in January 2006 and generally use it only on weekends. It makes great coffee, but some months ago, the automatic timer stopped working. Now, more importantly, the clip at the bottom of the cone shaped basket that holds the filter has broken. The plastic cracked into several tiny pieces, rendering the coffee maker unusable. Another issue is that the carafe can not be immersed when cleaning. If I factor in the price of the coffee maker, filters, charcoal filters, coffee and creamer, I would have been further ahead to buy coffee by the cup at the local convenience store! Unfortunately the coffee maker is just outside the one-year warranty period, so I am on my own to find a replacement basket. I feel the quality of this item does not match up to the price!

What our customer's say! "Best coffee maker I've owned", I am now on my second of these machines. The first lasted for five to six years until it eventually broke and quit working properly. [...] but I guess I just take it as a given that most consumer products, especially electrical ones, are not built for the long haul. Nevertheless, I have been very satisfied with this coffee maker. It makes good coffee quickly, and is easy to use. The carafe keeps the coffee reasonably hot for at least a couple hours, depending on how much coffee is in it. (Lower volumes cool faster.) The coffee does not get burnt as it does with hotplate coffee makers. Also, the carafe pours perfectly, unlike other brands and models I've seen. With the reusable filter, there is no need to buy paper filters. Other than a programmable timer/clock and the ability to pour a cup in mid-brew, there are no fancy, extraneous frills, just a very functional, satisfactory product. I have never owned a $200 or $300 coffee maker, and see no need when this machine is available for much less. "Great features except one!", Our household appreciates a good cup of coffee and the Capresso certainly delivers it. The features we were looking for included a removeable water reservoir, the capablity of being programmed and a thermal carafe instead of a warming plate. The only draw back is that it only has an eight cup capacity! On the rare occasion that coffee is left in the carafe, the temperature the carafe maintains is really good. We have had coffee over 4 hours later that was still piping hot and very flavorful. The charcoal filter may be an added benefit for some, however it is redundant for us because we have an inline water filtration system. "Broken in 3 Months", For many years I used a Capresso thermal coffeemaker with great results, until the heating element gave out. Three months ago I purchased the Capresso Elegance. It doesn't heat the water beyond tepid, and today a plastic part broke off the bottom of the filter basket. The coffeemaker is now inoperable, unless you insert something like a knife to line up the basket with the drip mechanism, and then carefully withdraw the knife and try to close the basket door. I'll be contacting Capresso to discover whether they might be able to forward a new basket to me, but this Capresso product no longer rates high on my list! "Delicious coffee", This pot has everything I need. It takes up very little space, it is handsome, you can get a cup while it's brewing, it doesn't stain, it keeps the coffee hot in its thermal pot, it has a timer, and none of the above would matter for a second if it didn't make a first rate cup of coffee. I bought it knowing that the piece that shuts off the flow when you get a mid-brew cup is fragile. And I immediatly broke it, called Capresso for another filter holder, and treat it with the attention it needs. The top was tricky to twist on, initially. So I made two small dots that lined it up for sealing. "Almost Me Proof", I've had this machine long enough to brew literally several thousand pots of coffee...like more than 4! I just bought a new one because I finally just plain wore the first one out. Actually it still brews just fine but I broke the sneak-a-cup lever for the second time plus in appliance years this thing is older than dirt so I'm gonna retire it(spare parts). If this thing can stand up to me it can stand up to anyone. I've had none of the problems some other folks have had and I don't take coffee as seriously as some people but I can say I didn't even shop other coffee makers I just came here and got me a new one. If you drink coffee like a normal person I can't imagine you're ever going to buy another coffee maker because this one will probably last you forever. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Almost perfect", One of the drawbacks of reading these reviews is that they're almost invariably written within a few months of the original purchase. Fine, fabulous, but if I'm going to drop a not-insubstantial amount of money on a small appliance, I want to know what it'll be doing a few YEARS down the road. Well, I purchased my Capresso Elegance (the 437.01) in late 2000 and it's still going strong. It makes one of the best tasting cups of home-brewed coffee I've ever had. Even my fellow coffee snob friends agree that my Capresso brew is mighty fine. I love the removable water tank - brilliant! The coffee brews hot hot hot, even after five use of vigorous use. The timer is simple to program and set. The carafe is nicely constructed and keeps the coffee hot for a fair amount of time. My gripes with the machine are minor, but for full disclosure: I really wish that the carafe could be set back on the base while closed (I live in a studio and don't have the space to set the carafe on the counter till I finish my coffee.) As other reviewers have reported, the brew-interrupt feature broke after a few years of use - not a big drawback for me, because I really don't mind waiting the 5 minutes for the full brew, but still a design flaw. Like others, I just removed this piece and kept using the machine. The water level indicator in the tank is not ideal. Not terrible, but could be better. Finally, I've twice had the carafe placed slightly off-kilter and ended up with a mess. But two minor floods in five years I can live with. Overall, a well-constructed machine that will deliver quality coffee for years and years. "Read the most recent reviews for accurate opinions", I read many reviews of this product and they were varied. Because I had owned a different model in the past, I decided to go ahead and purchase this smaller model. I believe that the company made some alterations after some of the older reviews were written.. The crafe on my model has a big opening for cleaning and pours easily. Also, I have no problems getting it located in the machine properly, nor had any accidental spilling. The only complaint that I have is that it is a little difficult to measure the water accurately and that it doesn't hold more than 8 cups. The markings are on the inside of the tank. This machine is great if you want 5-8 cups of coffee. "Increasing disappointment", After three years of daily use, averaging one 8-cup operation per day, the 437.01 now requires three to four restarts in order to completely drain the reservoir. Scrupulous cleaning no longer improves the situation, so do we do without while awaiting repair/replacement or bite the bullet and buy something new? We really like the coffee, enjoy the carafe feature, and have found that the easily broken temporary shut off is readily replaced. What is a suitable replacement? "OUTSTANDING COFFEEMAKER", Of all the coffeemakers I have used, the Capresso model 437-02 is by far the best in design and performance. The removable water reservoir is a unique feature not found on other coffeemakers. This unit is very easy to service and makes excellent "HOT" coffee in a well-designed 8-cup thermal carafe. The coffeemaker and carafe are both easy to keep clean. The carafe lid is a solid design without clogging vent holes found on others. If you're looking for a coffeemaker with outstanding features and performance, give this one a try. "Good coffee while it works", We bought this coffee maker in 2001. A couple of months after our purchase, we had to return it for a new machine because coffee leaked everywhere. As someone else stated in another review, customer service was great and took care of our replacement without question and timely. About a year later the programmable brewing feature stopped working. Several months ago, the part at the bottom of the basket that allows you to remove the caraffe and pour a cup before brewing is complete without dripping broke off. Now the machine only works intermittently, it has to be unplugged and plugged in again a few times before it decides to work. So, I'm on Amazon shopping for a new coffee maker since our days with the Capresso are numbered. I won't purchase the same machine again. I expect more life and quality from a $99 machine. ![]() |
