Others say...
"Price gouging? Typo? Yoo Hoo, Amazon..." This item sold for $8.99 (!!!) right here on Amazon just SIX MONTHS AGO. And now it's $189? Just say no, fellow shoppers. Methinks this seller is a bit too big for their britches. Hey Amazon, your Clue Phone is ringing. Best answer it before we all grab our pocketbooks and head out to the local thrift stores. "price v quality" i bought the salton ym9 yogurt maker over a year ago from amazon for about 12.99, as i recall. amazon is currently (6/29/08)listing it at $189.99. It is a spectacular buy at $12.99. It is a joke or a serious error at $189.99. "Easy as can be" Like others, I bought mine here at Amazon. I got it on sale for $15.00 or less, can't remember. Nearly $200? I can't imagine why, unless they include somebody to heat the milk for you. Face it, there's some work with making yogurt no matter what you do. Heating and cooling the milk is b o r i n g but with this gizmo that's about all you have to do. No making fussy little boxes to "cook" it in, no wondering if the oven is too hot/cold if you cook it in there. Couldn't be easier, makes a lovely product. Follow the directions included, and make sure you have a thermometer! I use a meat thermometer, works fine. "have used for two years,, bought at 20$" I love this yougurt maker , but over 100$ for it? I bought mine for 20$ two years ago off amazon with free shipping. I use Zippy containers for the yougurt, and I take a quart of Nancys yourgurt, put in a plastic ice cube tray , freeze, then have Nancy starter cubes for my yougurt. very simple, be warned low fat milk often does not have enought fat to make yougurt thick..... i use some 1/2 1/2 and whole milk. cook on "Fantastic product" I read almost every review before I bought this product, and as a result, I really learned how to make great yogurt. I came up with a few ideas on my own and I thought I would share them. 1. I also tossed the plastic container and now use a glass jar with lid. I boil the jar, lid, and any utensils I use. This is just an extra precaution - I want to make sure the right kind of bacteria is present in the yogurt. 2. I have tried almost every kind of plain yogurt on the market as a starter and I find that Stoneyfield Plain Organic works the best. It contains 6 different bacteria. 3. I also add 1/2 cup powdered milk, after the yogurt cools and before I add the starter yogurt. 4. I have tried almost every kind of milk available, whole, 2%, 1%, skim, organic and nonorganic. I have found that 2% organic does this trick. I have tried 2% nonorganic, and it is just a runny mess. If you want to be extra rich and don't care about calories, use whole organic and about 1 cup of heavy cream. Wow. 5. I like my yogurt THICK and so after sitting in the jar in the fridge, I strain it. BUT, I don't use expensive cheesecloth. I buy drainfitter material, found at any local hardware store. You can get of large roll for about $20. It does the same job as cheesecloth. Slip a colander in the sleeve (it is very elastic material), cut off the excess and sit the colander in a large bowl. Pour the yogurt in the colander (on top of the material) and sit the whole thing in the fridge, preferably overnight. The next day, all the liquid will be in the bowl and the remaining yogurt in the colander will be extremely thick. 5. For a super rich, almost dessert-like yogurt, add any thick jam and then whip it with the whip attachment of a hand-held mixer or immersion blender. Do you like Yoplait Whips yogurt? It will be thicker and more lush than that. Overall, a great buy and it has spoiled me forever. No more supermarket yogurt for me.

What our customer's say! "Fabulous Yogurt", I love this yogurt maker. I use non-fat milk along with non-fat dry milk. I add 2 tablespoons of agave with 2 teaspoons of fructose after I have heated the milk. When cooled I add vanilla (paste or powder) before adding the starter. I read some great information on some of the food blogs that suggested using a wide-mouth glass canning jar with a plastic lid in place of the plastic container that comes with the Salton Yogurt Maker. The lids can be purchased in the canning section of Walmart. That way I don't have to wait until I have used a batch of yogurt before making the next batch. It really is the creamiest, best tasting yogurt with wonderful consistency. "Not worth it", It is just like a slow cooker and it is so small. I had been using a slow cooker to make yogurt by myself and then I thought that I could get a yogurt maker to save my trouble. But after I got it, ----I found it is just another smaller slow cooker!! You have to go through all the same steps: warm your milk in a clean container; --- put it into the slow cooker or the so-called yogurt maker; put the yogurt seed that you bought ; --- make sure the temperature not too high to kill the yogurt bacteria; ---watch the time to make sure you are not "overgrow " it; --- take it out. There was at least twice that I thought I needed not to watch the time--because, it is a yogurt maker and it should stop by itself, but it did not. And then my yogurt turned into something hard to describe--sticky and very sour. Now this "Yogurt maker" is not used anymore at my home. "Very basic, very good.", Simple to use, had it over 2 years and it works well. Just throw together the yogurt culture, milk, and sugar, wait 24 hours, and voila the best tasting yogurt you've had is ready. "I think this price is a typo", The price listed here has to be a typo. I'm sure they meant to list it at $18.99. I have had mine for a few years now and I too have started using the quart mason jars instead of the container that it comes with. (Plastic should not be heated neither should hot liquids be poured into plastic for health reasons as I was taught in my MGT class). I still use mine but I am now experimenting with my electric oven using the same 1-quart mason jars simply because I would like to be able to make more than one quart at a time. ( I think I remember paying around $18 for mine). "Good Soy Yogurt", I cannot tolerate lactose, so I use this product to make my own soy yogurt. It works great. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Love it!", I love this maker! It is easy to use, and convenient. I almost always have yogurt ready in only 5 hours. "rating based on other reviews", Most reviewers give this a top rating, so I did too. I haven't tried mine out yet but trust the product in general. It's bulky but if you don't mind that then a good working one is probably fine for you. I piad $[...] for it on Amazon.com sale. "This product contains BPA - find a different yogurtmaker!", I bought this yogurt maker 2 1/2 years ago and used it regularly. However, when the recent BPA scare came out, I contacted the company to ask if it contains BPA. At first they did not respond to me at all. When I tried again, they sent me a ridiculous boilerplate message about how the US gov't does not see BPA as being dangerous. I would strongly recommend using a non-plastic yogurt maker (or at least one that doesn't contain BPA, as the chemical especially leaches into food when heated, and the whole point of a yogurt maker is to incubate the yogurt at the proper temperature) rather than risking exposing your family to more of this chemical than they have already gotten. It's upsetting to think I was doing something healthy for my sons by making them homemade yogurt instead of the storebought find, only to learn that they were exposed to extra bpa because of this maker. I am using the glass jar method now. "Great yogurt maker", I am extremely pleased with this yogurt maker. I am surprised how easy it is to make great tasting yogurt. I love the fact that I can now make my own yogurt and know exactly what ingredients are in it. Plus, it's much, much cheaper to make your own! "EXTRA!EXTRA!READ ABOUT A $100,000.00 YOGURT MAKER!", The Seller maybe "NEW" to Amazon as the reference states_BUT I think the Seller needs to check prices prior to posting_maybe reading the post or something rather.Or could this be an investment we need to know about OR the peak cost of GASOLINE per 1 quart_oops!_per 1 gallon??Good luck new seller on your great bargain basement priced items. ![]() |
