Others say...

"Great so far!"
I bought this for my mom's stocking after being frustrated with her can openers. She's had an electric opener, an old funky metal opener and then a side opener that I had suggested and stopped working well. Since I often help her cook, it was almost as much for me as her.

So, I went on Amazon to find her one that people recommended and liked and I'm pleased to say that we test drove this baby on Christmas Day and it opened about 10 cans in a row without a problem. The blade cut cleanly through the metal, leaving no jagged parts to snag your skin. The handles are also comfortable to use and the crank turns easily.

Great opener for the price for sure!

"Great Product but cheaper elsewhere"
I am very pleased with this can opener... easy to use, easy to clean. But you can get this at Bed Bath & Beyond for $5.99 (as I found out a few days after my order). Check your local store - this is one instance where Amazon was not the best deal.

"Simple and practically perfect"
Use a swing-away can opener then try ANY competitior and you will discover the difference. It is shocking how much of a difference in something so simple can make. The comfort grip/extra padded ones are also very nice.

Can't get any better in a manual can opener.

"I've used the same one for 30 years!"
Only now is it beginning to show signs of getting dull, so I'm looking for a replacement. The KitchenAid opener I just bought at Target doesn't even work as well as my old, dull Swingaway. It's amazing.

"Old fashioned can opener"
I love this can opener, my Mother had one & it lasted her life time. Great for the money

What our customer's say!

"Great Tool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!******", I bought this opener to replace one given to my wife and me about 35 or more years ago. After trying three different "copy cat" openers, we decided to go back to the real McCoy. I don't think there is a better can opener in existance. God Bless Swing-a-way.

"The one that WORKS!", Have tried all sorts of "better mousetraps". This can opener lasts for years (my mother-in-law has one that's at least a decade old), and will open all sorts of non-standard cans that trip up other models. Highly recommended!

"The best manual can opener available", I've tried other kinds that looked fancier or were sold under the names of celebrity chefs, but this is the best. It's the only one I've used that pops the can lid up slightly at the end of the cut so you can grab it easily for removal. You will not be disappointed in the quality and operation of this opener!

"25+ Years and Still Working Perfectly", I bought one of these in 1982. It still works as well as it did 25 years ago. The white handle is off-white now instead of bright white, and the blade and gear area isn't shiny. It was made in the USA--but I don't know if they are now or not.

Back then cat-food cans with pop-tops were not the norm, so pulling it out of the drawer was the signal for the cat to go nuts.

It cost half of what you have to pay now, but in inflation-adjusted dollars, it may be cheaper. You couldn't buy an electric can opener back then for the same price, they were much more expensive, but they were made to last, too. Certainly the quality appears to be as good now as it was then. Definitely a lifetime purchase. Cheaper can openers may be available, but do they work as well? Looking over the top-selling manual can openers on Amazon, many appear to be knock-offs of this one.

Why would you buy an electric opener which takes up space on the counter or in the cabinet, has to be plugged in, can break down, and uses more resources to manufacture? Not to mention how unpleasant it is to have to try to hold that spinning can and operate an electric opener and not cut yourself all at the same time.

You can wash out the mechanism with hot soapy water or even use a little Bon Ami and an old toothbrush every once in a while, just shake out the water and make sure it dries out well. I probably wouldn't run it through the dishwasher or soak it.

Pros:
* Works very well at opening cans, easy to use.
* Well made, long-lasting.
* Takes up little drawer space, no counter space, and doesn't occupy an electrical socket.
* Well-priced.
* Easy to clean.
* Wise use of environmental resources in materials and energy compared to electric models.
* Good utilitarian industrial design.

Cons:
* Does not open cans with tight corners, like some rectangular sardine or terrine cans.
* May not be appropriate for people with severe arthritis or other manual disability--an electric may be better. But, this is a better manual model than the cheapies--has a soft plastic grips that only have to be squeezed in one plane and the turning mechanism is easy to grasp.
* If you don't pay attention, the lid might fall in the can. Never has been a problem for me, but you should always wash the top of a can before opening it, regardless.

"buy 2!", I grew up with one of these in the drawer for 20 years. It was probably in the drawer for 10 years prior to that. When it finally started to miss a few cuts, we tried to replace it with another brand. We must have bought 3 different replacements that all wound up worse than the worn out swing away. I threw out all the new ones and kept the old swing away until by accident, I saw a local store selling new ones. I immediately bought 2. I think that by my age, 2 should be just about right to last me for the rest of my life.

If you have ever used one of these, you know how good it is. I only want to encourage some of the people that may not already own one to go ahead and buy 2. If you have one then maybe you should consider getting a spare.

"EVERYTHING GOOD YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT THIS CAN OPENER IS INVARIABLY TRUE! -- WOW!, ", IN A NUTSHELL: THE GOLD STANDARD FOR THE PRICE OF TIN

As can openers go - there are none better, but the fact that these are available for around $10. and last literally forever seems too good to be true. Nevertheless, it is true. Like many other people, we have tried a lot of different can openers, some electric some hand held, but we always come back to the one that has always been in our kitchen -- 'SWING-A-WAY'.

WHAT MAKES THE 'SWING-A-WAY CAN OPENER' SUPERIOR TO OTHER CAN OPENERS?

3 components contribute synergistically to Swing-A-Way's success;

1]- Very durable Tempered Steel gears with a cutting edge that stays sharp literally forever.

2]- Ample leverage provided by a large chrome-plated steel turn-key to assure enough torque into the gears to open any can simply by hand turning.

3]- Plastic coated Steel handles that facilitate penetration of the can by the cutting edges with just ordinary hand pressure.

WHY ARE THESE LONG LASTING SUPER CAN OPENERS SO INEXPENSIVE?

With only several moving parts made of easily manufactured components that are sold on a huge scale worldwide, it costs very little to make this product despite its excellence.

[I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY PRODUCT OR COMPANY BUT WE HAVE USED 'SWING-A-WAY' LITERALLY FOREVER WITH UNIFORMLY EXCELLENT RESULTS

"An American Classic and a true gem of a can opener", You cant buy a better hand operated manual can opener! Thats not right, you cant buy a better can opener period. This is the best can opener you can buy, except for the wall mounted swing away can opener. Both are good and will last, The only drawback I have found with this can operner is that I would like a hole in the top to hang this can opener from a nail or hook in the kitchen. With that modification it would be the perfect can opener. It is easy and smooth to operate and mine hssnt left any jagged spur on the lip of the can. It cuts cleanly. Why spend $3 for a cheap can opener that are difficult to use and hurt your hand and quickly wear out. Spend a little bit money and get one that will last and are a pleasure to use. Highly recommended.

"SIMPLY THE BEST", NOW WHY CAN'T EVERYTHING BE MADE THIS GOOD? OPENS CANS AND LASTS AND LASTS. JUST WHAT WE WANT...

ONLY ONE IMPROVEMENT I CAN THINK OF: STAINLESS STEEL PARTS. IT DOES
RUST.

"6 Stars Out Of 5.", The other reviewers have said it all, but here's my take on this very affordable (I got mine from a local well known chain store for $3.00 less than A'.com's affiliate offers it for) to replace an old entry level Swing-A-Way that had seen better days.

This unit is designed with the usual top gear wheel turned by the handle, BUT has incorporated a SECOND GEAR WHEEL for the can underlid rim advance wheel that meshes with the top gear wheel making for truly EFFORTLESS can opening.

My $18.00 Rival Xtra-Tall electric can opener was JAMMING on the large 34.5 oz solid lid coffee cans, but THIS Swing-A-Way had NO TROUBLE with these cans opening them with great ease.

BUY THIS ONE and let the others--including the "side openers" (a fad that I feel will fade quickly)--gather dust on the shelves. Swing-A-Way--in this configuration--is the BEST!!!

"Easy to use - smooth cutting action", The SwingAway can opener still seems to be terrific after all these years. The real question will be if it will hold up over the long run. I am extremely pleased with it after two months of use. It cuts easily and smoothly, even on dented cans. I like it a lot.

Update: It's still working fine after two years of use. 05/2008
