"A little loud on the highest setting", This fan is great -- really powerful, I pointed it up towards the ceiling and it kept the air moving in the room. This is my first Vornado, and I'm convinced they are a superior product to regular fans.

"Very durable little fan", I purchased one of these little Vornado fans back in 1992, and it still works as well today as it did when I bought it. It's quiet, powerful, and very easy to clean. What I especially like is that it directs a strong, single current of air across the room. I prefer to have a fan's breeze blowing directly on me, instead of diffusing throughout the room. The Vornado's vortex action is perfectly suited to this kind of use. I can set up the fan several feet away from my desk, aim it directly at my chair, and enjoy its cooling breeze. If this is the sort of fan you're looking for, you can't go wrong with the Vornado 510.

But not great for other than a small room. I also got a Premium series, 5 setting fan directly from Vornado, as they do not seem to offer this product through regular retailers. Much more positively, both fans are virtually silent on low settings, but the Premium (with a premium price about twice the cost) is clearly superior--if you need to cool a larger area. Either product is definately a cut above the norm. As they say, you get what you pay for. The seeming hype about how a five degree increase in comfort for a device that uses little power yields a comprable level of comfort, surprising, lives up to its claim. Small area? Five stars.

"Not really a 510 ", I ordered this 510 model but received a 530. The 510 is no longer available and the 530 is the newer version that this seller is sending in its place. It was quiet on the lowest setting but deafening on the middle and high setting. They look the same however the 530 is not the quality that earned the 510 those great reviews. I returned it and received a refund however I never would have placed the order and had to go through the hassle if I knew which item they were really selling.


"Misleading description", The fan is fine, but it's described as linen white in color. In fact, it's flat out gray.

"Vornado extremly quiet at low setting", I recently purchased the Vornado for my small office. I needed a quiet fan due to meeting with people through out the day. This fan is extremly quiet on the low setting only. The other settings are fairly loud given the size of the fan.

"Noisy", I have two other Vornado fans that I am really happy with so I decided to buy one for my office at work. Unfortunately, the 510W Compact Air Circulator is so noisy that I can't use it unless I'm by myself and using headphones. At the two lowest speeds the blades seem to be unbalanced and at the highest speed it moves so much air (usually a good thing) that it bothers my neighbors on both sides (I'm actually in an office so there's no "cube effect").

I fault myself for not returning it right away for an exchange but the fan obviously was never inspected before it was shipped.

"Discontinued Item: Watch Out for Substitution", This is a high quality fan that is in very short supply as of July 2007. One of the last of the U.S.-built Vornados, it is superior, in my view, to the current China-built model 530 (see my review, which compares the newer 530 to the older 510; BTW, in Vornado-speak, the alpha stands for color: s = slate, w = white, etc.).

WARNING: I tried to snag a new 510 from True Value/ Polstein's Home and Beyond (they seem to be the same outfit -- look at the customer service phone numbers) through Amazon, but Polstein substituted the inferior 530 without the courtesy of asking my permission. Polstein has added fine print that says they can substitute an item (is this what they mean by "beyond" I wonder?), a somewhat devious practice; other sellers that once offered the 510 have dropped out because they have none. Customer service is unresponsive, verified by feedback from other users. Thank goodness for Amazon's A-Z guarantee with marketplace sellers; got my money back.



"Satisfaction!", It's perfect for the space, moves a lot of air and is very quiet.

"Good fan", This is a good little fan. It's nice that you can turn this upwards and downwards to direct air flow away from you rather than just directing air from side to side. And it's very quiet except on the highest setting but even on high is quieter than other fans.
