Others say...
"Chef's Choice 695 Electric French Press" Excellent product. It is easy to use. Very versatile, rapid, and makes excellent gourmet coffee. Since I am from Europe, I know and I appreciate the French coffee taste. This is the real thing and not an immitation. "Excellent but high-maintenance" This is an excellent idea, and the resulting product is quite good. It boils water incredibly fast and makes excellent coffee and tea. However, there are several things you should be aware of before purchasing this item, to maximize your enjoyment and avoid problems. If you are not the kind of person who can follow directions well, and hates taking care of finicky yet useful appliances, this is not the device for you. If, like me, you are willing to go a few extra miles to enjoy better beverages, you will probably really enjoy this device. First, DO NOT let the unit boil over. If you do, it will spray hot liquid from the spout and some of the liquid will get down into the unit's electronics, causing the light to malfunction (or worse). There are several easy ways to avoid this: 1. Never fill the unit any higher than the "max" line. 2. Never put your tea or coffee in while the unit is actively heating. Most of the "boiling over" problem is caused by the foaming action resulting from the additives, not the water itself. 3. Watch the unit. Once it hits a rolling boil, just turn it off yourself before it boils over. Second, use a coarser grind of coffee so that you don't have to exert extreme pressure on the plunger. This will, as another reviewer noted, cause gasket failure. Finer grinds are also much harder to clean out of the unit's bottom. Finally, if you do have a leak problem, someone else suggested using high-temp gasket maker to fix it. That is a fantastic solution and will most likely solve the leak problem once and for all. Obviously, this is pretty far down the high-maintenance appliance road. I use this pot several times daily to make tea and coffee - I have one at home and one at the office. There is no other device that would satisfy my needs as well as this one does. "A disaster" On day two, the unit leaked all the contents (including coffee grounds) all over the counter. This is consistent with what several other reviewers have reported. I would strongly suggest that one not purchase this item. There must be some serious flaw in the manufacturing or design process. "Chef's Choice 695 Electric French Press" This was a replacement of an existing coffee maker that was worn out after years of use. It makes great tasting coffee, using the French Press Method. It is not for everyone but if you enjoy coffee made with fresh ground beans, this is the only way to go. "Great product" I use it only to boil water for tea and for that it works superbly. I did have one die but I think it was because it was left empty with switch on. Probably burned it out. Other than that no problems. High price but worth it. Easy to clean glass pot, very quick boil. I have three of these, none has leaked.

What our customer's say! "A terrific French press for tea/coffee", I bought my first Chef's Choice Electric French Press back in 2002 and never had a problem with it until a couple of months ago when we accidentally knocked it down into the porcelain kitchen sink... Luckily, our local hardware store carries it so getting a new one was quick and easy. :) I recommend this French press because: - It boils water very quickly (faster than the stove and microwave). - It automatically shuts off when water reaches a full boil. - It works wonderfully as a tea kettle. - Its footprint is very small and the base is very slim. - Stay-cool handle and lid. - It comes with an extra lid in case you wish to use the appliance as a hot pot. Oh, by the way, I never had a problem with the silicon seal around the base. No leaks whatsoever. You shouldn't either, if you are careful not to get the base wet when rinsing the carrafe. TIP: If you brew loose black tea in it, as I do, after a couple of weeks the glass will become unsightly. Clean it in a wink by brewing some raspberry tea in it - it will leave your kettle sparkling (I kid you not). "Great tea, poor quality control.", I enjoy great tea and the perfect brew. I've used similar items previously with good results. This electric french press brews the perfect cup of tea. However, I was dismayed to see that after two uses, it started to leak. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the food grade silicon seal around the base of the glass portion of the carafe was irregularly placed. Easily visible by what should be quality control. The leakage is intermittent, so not a total waste. I would recommend, but beware the iffy quality. "SIMPLY THE BEST", I have had this press for over a year....I have none of all the problems people are reporting. It is perfect, makes theeeeee best cup of coffee, no problems whatsoever. I would buy a new one right away should I drop it on the floor. "French Press with Heat", Chef's Choice 695 Electric French Press, Black The Chefs Choice French Press removes a step from the traditional process of coffee making with a press, boiling the water in a kettle and transferring the hot water to the french press. It makes great coffee quickly and is easy to clean after use. If your counter space is limited, you'll really like it's compact size. "They leak!", When these came out a few years ago I bought one right away. Unfortunately it leaked around the base quite significantly. A few months later I bought another one, hoping it would be better. It leaked even worse. This one may be a new and improved model but I'm afraid to buy it -- I've already wasted $180 on two that didn't work well. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Electric French Press", We love the French press ... we use it only for tea. It heats very quickly and stays hot, and the accompanying pamphlet clearly explains instructions for properly steeping different types of loose tea. Tea lovers, I'd highly recommend it. "Love It", I got this for Christmas '07 and have been using it daily for coffee and tea and love it! Twice the "light" didn't come on, but the water still boiled fine and the "light" is now working fine. I would recommend this product. "two broken in one year; no response from manufacturer", This is a great idea! Unfortunately, we have had two of these die on us in about one year. Bought the first one, loved it, then saw it start leaking all over the base; soon it stopped working. Wrote the company, sent photos showing the leak, no response. A houseguest bought us a new one (before we could tell him to save his money). New one seemed to work fine, then it died the same leaky death after about 4-5 months. We kept the carafe, which works fine on its own if you pour boiled water into it. Now we're in the market for a new French Press and we are getting a good old fashioned manual one. "Delicious coffee fast, but...", I'm back for my third pot, because of the same leaky base problem reported by others here. The gasket that holds the glass carafe to its base tends to give way after a while. My pot is in frequent use, 5 days a week. As long as you use a coarse grind, the unit should last quite a while -- my latest is over 2 years old. A fine grind causes the mesh screen to clog up, which forces you to use greater pressure when pushing down the press, which puts stress on the gasket. Still, this makes the best tasting coffee I've had at home, and given about 1000 cups of coffee, the cost of the maker is about 7 cents a cup. I'm willing to buy another if that's what it takes. "Quick, easy and delicious coffee", This pot boils water much faster than in the tea kettle. The French press method makes good strong coffee in less time than the Chemex cone filter method, where you have to wait for each pour to drain through before pouring the next. It also holds more than most French presses. The cup levels on the side are really 1/2 cup portions, so don't expect 8 cups when you fill to the '8' line. Still, I would recommend this product to anyone. You do need to handle it with care, as it is easy to break. The taste and expediency are worth the little additional time it take to clean it. ![]() |
