Others say...

"Looks nice, great idea - poor execution."
I recently was given this item as a gift, after registering for it for my wedding. Upon brewing, I was extremely pleased with the taste and quality of coffee produced by the cuisinart. Additionally, the timer worked like a charm, and the coffee stayed hot for a solid 3-4 hours!

So, after reading this glowing review, you might wonder "Why did you give it a 1?"

The answer is that 1 is the exact number of times I will ever be able to use my wonderful cuisinart coffee maker, because that is exactly how many times it took to shatter the inner glass liner of the carafe!

In the manual for the cuisinart (which I actually read!) it informs you that you should 'run warm water through the carafe before placing hot water in the carafe.' Which I did... but, alas, upon inspection while washing it later on that evening (I had used it to entertain) I saw a long circular hairline crack running from the base to the top of the glass.

My only hope is that Cuisinart will replace my carafe free of charge - if they do, i will happily rewrite this review. But if they don't - and if you are reading this, they have not - BUYER BEWARE!!!

"Cuisinart DTC-950 Programmable Thermal Carafe"
The Cuisinart DTC-950 is attractive and nicely made. I've used it a few times now, and it makes an absolutely great tasting pot of coffee! Since the entire system is sealed, (unlike a traditional hot plate type coffee maker), the coffee is very hot and holds its flavor extremely well. In fact, I poured a second cup of coffee more than an hour after I brewed it, and it was just as hot and fresh tasting as the first cup.

The program mode, and the automatic shut-off feature are a big plus, and I like the fact that I can take the carafe into my home office, or any other room in the house. The exterior of the carafe doesn't get hot, so you can safely put it down anywhere. The coffee can also be poured without having to rotate or remove the carafe lid. That's another very convenient feature.

I would have given this product 5 stars except for one design problem. I found that the water level marks inside the water level indicator are so faint that they're nearly impossible to read. I have to fill the water reservoir using a measuring cup in order to get the water to the correct level without having a hassle. Cuisinart can easily correct this problem by etching the water level marks into the plastic housing next to the fill indicator.

One other tip. This coffee maker is taller than a typical drip coffee maker. It's nearly 16 inches tall, so if you want to keep it on your kitchen counter top, make sure that your cabinets provide enough clearance.

details..

What our customer's say!

"Item shown is not what you receive", I ordered a Cuisinart DTC-950, which is a coffeemaker with a 10- cup thermal carafe, and I printed out the order which went through Cooking.com. However I received Cuisinart DCC-1200W, which has a 12-cup glass carafe. Customer Service at Cooking.com said I had received the one I ordered, so product information shown online is not always correct. Buyer Beware!

"Want a gift for someone you don't really like?", I recently purchased the DTC-950 with the "stainless" carafe. It was not a good choice. I can tolerate one or two flaws in a product design, but this had so many it had to go back.

Flaw 1: The carafe is glass on the inside, not metal as you might exepect. The carafe HAS to be preheated every time you use the machine or it may break. You can set the timer to make coffee for you in the morning, but you have to wake up before it starts to preheat the carafe!

Flaw 2: The carafe is not dishwasher safe. In fact, you cannot even immerse it in water to wash it.

Flaw 3: The pour thorugh cap that is designed to keep air out makes pouring a single cup of coffee a ridiculously slow, drawn out process.

Flaw 4: The water fill graduation lines are difficult (if not impossible) to read from the front of the machine.

Flaw 5: The carafe does a very poor job of retaining heat. After less than two hours, the coffee was only lukewark and had to be zapped in order to get it at a good drinking temp.

Also, for a supposedly higher end machine, I would have though that Cuisinart would have included a gold-tone filter.

So, if you want to drive someone crazy, send them this machine and let them deal with it. I don't know of anyone I feel passive aggressive towards (at the moment) so ours is getting returned.

"Great idea, badly made", I also loved the coffee, but only had the coffeemaker for a short time. The glass shattered within a month (Cuisinart wouldn't help me at all). I bought a new plastic carafe, and within a week of getting it, the electronics started to go. It just wouldn't turn on most mornings. After a touchy week, it died.

I would love to get another because I loved the idea so was checking out the site to see if others had similar problems. Cuisinart didn't seem to care at all, which was a bummer.

"Cuisinart DTC-950 Programmable Automatic Brew & Serve Therma", This is a great coffeemaker! I LOVE the fact that it makes great-tasting coffee; does not have a warmer/burner on the bottom; shuts off automatically as soon as it is finished brewing the coffee; you can carry the thermal pot with you and set it down close to wherever you are because the bottom is not hot; and, it keeps the coffee warm and fresh much longer than it advertises! I highly recommend this pot to any buyer! NOTE: Do read the instructions and call Cuisinart if you have any questions. They are great about giving you pointers. AND, you do have to run warm water in the thermal pot prior to brewing because the coffee brews at 185 degrees and will crack the pot if you don't run warm water in it. If you're programming it to brew coffee before you get up in the morning, no problem....just run warm water in it, pour it out, and the thermal pot stays warm inside until the coffeemaker brews your coffee while you are asleep the next morning!

"Cusinart DTC-950 Programmable Thermal Coffeemaker", I LOVE this coffeemaker! It makes GREAT-tasting coffee, and I love the fact that it there is no burner on the bottom; the coffeemaker shuts off automatically as soon as it quits brewing; and, it keeps the coffee hot much longer than it advertises! This has been a great buy for us, and I highly recommend it to other buyers. Be sure to read and follow the instructions and call Cuisinart if you have any questions. They are great about clarifying things.
