Others say...
"It has its problems, very poor customer support" As others have mentioned, this product becomes too hot to touch so I just use potholders when handling it. My crock pot was part of a recall because of the handles cracking and breaking. I followed the instructions to get the part replaced at no charge. I waited eight months for the new part and had to make numerous phone calls. I heard every excuse from they were back-ordered to my order was never received. Friends told me just to go buy a new one because it was the principle of the matter that made me persevere and wait for the recalled part. When the food comes up and simmers, the lid bounces around on top and spews steam, creating quite a mess. I have to wedge a toothpick between the lid and the pot to prevent this from happening. It needs some sort of venting system. The cooking pot itself is rough on the the bottom and has scratched the living daylights out of my stainless steel sink. On the bright side, it does actually cook the food. "Re:F.Y.I. product recall" For all of negative comments concerning the handles, please be advised that I was informed of a product recall concerning this problem. I followed the recall instructions and received a replacement heating element in July of 2005 that so far has not been a problem. Why the other people did not know of the recall I can't answer, but I did register my purchase with the manufacturer. "Bad Taste" I've had this crock pot for a year and I've given it every chance possible. Now I'm going to ditch it. The problem for me has been TASTE. I hate the taste of food cooked in this pot. Yes, the aluminum gets hot enough to burn fingers. I don't know about the handles cracking - maybe that would happen in another year, but I'm not going to wait to find out. I've used the crock pot for soups, either presoaking lentils (peas, etc) or cooking the soup or both. Which ever way I do it, I always get a bad taste from the crockpot (yes, it is clean). I've done comparisons and my soups cooked in my steel pots are much better! "Used very little, knob cracked, lid "spits" steam" I own 4 other Rival crock pots and have never had any problems. One of those is a VERY old one inherited from my wonderful mother. This one spits so much steam from the lid while cooking I was afraid to leave it on while I was away from the house. I came home after first use to find the pot sitting in a lake of water! I was sure I must have not put lid on correctly. I still used it a few more times while I was home to supervise. This has been used very rarely and today the knob just disintegrated in my hand when I turned it on! This is not the usual good quality of my other Rival products. Found this site searching for a replacement knob only to find out there has been a recall! "Handles and temperature knob cracked and falling off!!" I only have used this about 8 times for just my husband and myself. I took it out yesterday and the temperature knob fell off in two pieces in my hand. Then I noticed the handles are all cracked and ready to come apart. VERY DANGEROUS. This gets very hot and if lifted it would cause a real problem.

What our customer's say! "Broken Handles? There's a recall - get it replaced for free", Like others here, I was very disappointed when the handles on the side of this Crock Pot started cracking and crumbling to pieces. I found out there's a recall for this Crock Pot due to this issue. Check out www.rivalrecall.com for details (you cut the plug off of your Crock Pot base, send it to them, and they'll send you a new base - you keep the same crock and lid). Overall I give the product 3 stars since it still gets very hot to the touch. I wish the handles hadn't failed as they did, but I appreciate Rival shipping me a replacement free of charge. "Total junk", We used this crock pot four times. After the first two, the knob crumbled into chunks. Then the right handle broke into three pieces (while being stored after the third time we used it), now I am making soup, and the right handle is cracking. This is like a bad joke. "POOR "Customer Service"", Be careful ordering from this merchant. Ordered this slow cooker on 12/10/07 for a Christmas gift, my "confirmation" said delivery estimate 12/14/07 - 12/19/07. Never heard a word from PresentsForYou. Received notification email from Amazon (thank you, Amazon) that the order had not yet been ship-confirmed by PresentsForYou, & that I could contact PresentsForYou for more information about this order, including the expected ship date, that I may contact the merchant directly by replying to the e-mail message, which I did. I never heard anything from them, & had to go through Amazon to cancel the order. "A Really Smart Buy", A while ago, I received an Amazon gift certificate which I spent on this product. Reviewing utensils and appliances is not my thing but I feel obligated to say that after Amazon did its usual fine job with prompt delivery, we have found this item a very useful addition to our household. Like so many, I guess, we are struggling financially. We therefore try to eat a lot of soups and stews. This crockpot uses heat very efficiently and turns out exceptionally well blended meals every time. I'm very glad I bought it and I think it would be of value to anyone in the same position as my family and myself. Five stars!!! "Excellent Product", Great price for a great product. Looks nice too. Crock is removable and easy to clean. Would recommend item to anybody looking for a medium sized crock pot. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Bad customer service", I had this pot for about two months, using it once a week, when one handle, then another, cracked. The sides are too hot. It spits out the sides of the lids. Food burns to a crust on the sides. I have had larger, older, Rival pots last for years. Lately, I don't know why they just feel cheap. I also had the bottom of the matching 5 quart size suddenly unravel while I was carrying a crock full of meatballs from the kitchen to the dining room and the crock fell to the ground with the heating element exposed. Always used pot holders, always filled up food to over halfway. Did all as expected, but the screws unravel or broke inside between the layers of the aluminum sides. Can't buy replacement parts easily. Can't reach a person at the Rival website. "Give Credit Where Credit is Due", I found this site before getting to the real Rival site. Like many, I was searching for the site for replacement parts. I realized that many of us were having problems with the same parts and that there was also a recall. After reading some of the negative reviews I decided to call Rival for new parts anyway. After a rather long wait on "hold" I did get to speak to a fellow who was very nice. He gladly handled the problem and my new base is on the way. So give the company some credit for standing behind it's product and having some integrity. "Works, but safety concerns", As others have noted, the outer case gets very hot. I decided to take it apart to understand why. The removable stoneware sits in an inner aluminum pot surrounded by the outer metal case. The pot and case are held together by a screw, spacer, washers, and nuts through the bottom of the pot. A lip around the top of the pot wraps around the top edge of the case, and 3 legs under the pot contact the bottom of the case. The heating element wraps around the bottom of the sides of the pot. The handles and temp control are attached to the outer housing. There are several metal-to-metal contact points between the pot and outer housing. The screw, legs of the pot, and upper lip conduct heat from the pot to the outer housing. Since the base is metal and does not have insulated feet, I recommend placing the unit on a heat-resistant surface away from combustables, flammables, and exposed skin when in use. The handles and control knob feel sturdy, but time will tell whether they will crack from the heat. The switch body is also plastic and is mounted very close to the heating element. The inner wiring is wrapped in insulated fabric sleeves, but they are in contact with the housing. The 3ft power cord is permanently attached and is unusually stiff. I have to form it into shape before plugging it in, and I don't coil it up between uses. The package I received from Amazon did not include the 200 page recipe book. There were some recipes in the owner's guide and a couple of recipes on the box. A 4-page slow cooker accessory catalog was included showing cookbooks, travel bags, bread/cake bake pan, meat rack, dust cover, liner bags for sale. UPDATE: The outer case was recalled by the manufacturer because of several cases of cracked handles. I had to cut the plug off the end of cord and return it. They sent me a new case and reimbursed me for the shipping. "Rival crockpot piece of junk...", Probably have bashed this product enough, but it is insulting to still see "Sturdy lid and side handles for improved grip" advertised. In no time at all, the handles broke off like peanut brittle; glad I wasn't carrying it around the kitchen. No wonder no one carries replacement handles. Don't know what's better, but sure won't try Rival again. "Simply horrible!", My family has used Rival's crockpots for years so I was thrilled to recieve one as a wedding gift. I can deal with it being hot on the outside but, like everyone else one of my handles started to chip and crack one night after I took it to a party. After that handle snapped off the other followed a few days later. I was dismayed to have the screws that held them on drop into the insulated lining of the crockpot. When I wrote to Rival about it (it having been slightly over a year since I'd recieved it) not only did they take forever to respond but they denied my claim due to it no longer being under warranty. I definitely won't buy another, which is a shame since I was so fond of the company before this happened. ![]() |
