Others say...
"Lost a few pieces - anyone selling parts?" Had the machine for a few years now. Makes good ice-cream, some recipes work better than others. Make sure you soak the bucket as directed to swell the seams and prevent leakage! Unable to use now that I have lost the plastic cover, dasher, and cork stopper (the latter two required for the churn shaft to engage the motor). Unable to find replacement parts anywhere - Anyone have parts for this 8550-X model they'd like to sell? "AWFUL ITEM" This is is not worth getting. It worked great the first two times. Then the bucket started leaking water. Had to reseal all of the joints. The bracket on the bottom of the motor broke that turns the ice cream bucket. Save your money and buy from a store near you so you can return if needed. "WORKS GREAT EASY TO USE" VERY SIMPLE TO USE MIX YOUR ICE CREAM FROM YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE, PLUG IN AND ADD YOUR ICE AND SALT WHEN IT IS DONE THE MACHINE WILL STOP. OPEN AND ENJOY. "Poor Quality" Dasher cracked on outer edge the first time I used it. The second time I used it the dasher cracked along its shaft and the motor began squealing loudly (it was loud to begin with). Definitely would not buy again! "Rival 8550-X 5 qt Ice Cream Maker" Received Ice Cream maker as wedding gift - Used three times and was not successful in any attempt - Followed instructions completely - Ice Cream froze along the outside - The Dasher did not stay stationary to mix the ice cream during the freezing stage - It turned with the can - In last attempt the plastic dasher broke inside of the can rendering the product useless - Attempt to find parts online for this model unsuccessful -

What our customer's say! "Poor wood construction, weak dasher ", I guess wanting a good insualted type wooden bucket was needed RIVAL produces weak poor quality, Go with plastic bucket and plastic dasher is poor on performance but for cheap value it teh plastic bucket that you must buy, Presoaking wooded tub prior to use is a waste of time and fun away from family "Garbage", I bought this thing because my grandfather had a hand-crank ice cream maker, and made some of the best ice cream. Sadly, those are getting hard to come by. I was a little apprehensive about buying this, since I also remember that it was hard work churning that stuff and I fully expected the motor to burn out. It didn't, but everything else went wrong. The bucket doesn't rotate as quickly as with the hand-crank, the pail is really flimsy and bent the first time using it. Because there isn't enough torque, you can't pack enough ice around the pail to get the ice cream to freeze. This thing is a waste of money. I'm going to run around to the antiques stores tomorrow and find something that actually works. "A favorite!", My first Rival Ice Cream maker died after about 10 yrs of a lot of use and I loved it so much I ordered another immediately. I make great ice cream which is a favorite for every family event. I would never purchase any other ice cream maker - hopefully Rival will continue with this model for many years. "Poor product design.....faulty machine.", Hi Everyone....I like many others bought a piece of junk. However...I did not read the reviews. I just saw I and bought it. My father wanted one. We tried it and followed the instructions. We had the sme problems listed in many of the reviews. Metal shavings, not contack being made...you name it...faulty machine. I called rival for their help. There response to me was that they do not honour the warranty for purchases made on amason and ebay. The lady at rival said I would have to buy back the motor. We are not spending anymore money on this unit. My father decided to work on the bucket to lower the motor. We are trying again to churn the ice cream. I also do not recommend this product. "Terrible", It is better to buy an inexpensive one because when the ice melts it leaks through the wood and I have to keep going back to put ice in the bucket because the space is so small. I have one that I bought for $16 and all I have to do is put the ice in one time and wait until it is done. It is not worth getting. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Cheap POS", The first batch was fine. On the next 3 batches the bottom 1/2 of the product froze with no air encorporated and liquid remained on top. My wife discovered the beater did not fit well in the motor and was slipping. Successfully made a 1/2 batch using a button undet the bucket. Sucessfully made another 1/2 batch. Tried to make another batch Saturday and it kept slipping even with button in the bottom and put a piece of tee-shirt on the shaft in an attempt to keep it from slipping. I should have believed the reviews that said it was cheaply made and unreliable. I'll try to get an adjustment. "DO NOT BUY!!! FAULTY PRODUCT!!! Broke 3 in a row!!!", Do not buy this ice cream maker. I bought one thinking that it was a quality old fashioned ice cream maker like grandma's old one that lasted 20 years. BUT IT IS NOT!!! It did not freeze after an hour, and when we took it apart, it had shredded the metal shaft, and put metal shavings in the ice cream. We returned it for a new one, and it did the same thing. We returned it again, and gave it a third chance, but it shaved the rod a third time. DO NOT BUY RIVAL ICE CREAM MAKERS!!! They need to recall all of their faulty products. "Not like they once were", My first impression was disappointment when I unpacked it. Comparing it to the one we purchased 25 years ago(also a Rival) the wood tub was much thinner and there was not as much space for ice between the wall of the tub and the inner container for the ice cream mix. That said, we have used it twice and it gets the job done, just not as rapidly as the old one. Also, the mix recipe in the new one does not taste as good as the old recipe. The motor is much louder than the old one. Rival has availability though, and if you enjoy eating the final product, this may be as good as you can do in 2007. "Badly engineered", As several others have stated this thing is pure junk. The bucket did leak and the instructions do advise to soak it ahead of time. Thats crazy. The process requires melted ice water to fill the bucket to transfer the cold and also to prevent the ice from freezing to the inner metal can. It will not freeze correctly with out it (also in the instructions) BUT... my main gripe is the poor design of the paddle to socket connection. The paddle shaft is aluminum and mine (like several others here) stripped out on the very first use as the connection is too short to properlly engage the scocket. The result was metal shavings from the rounded off shaft in the ice cream and hard freeze around the outside with liquid in the center as the paddle was stuck. I did follow all supplied instructions. This is simply a poorly designed product. If I could give it 0 stars I would! "Leaky bucket", The bucket leaks regardless of soaking it in water. I soaked the bucket for 24 hours and the ice water drains right out. Because of the leaking it takes much longer to freeze the ice cream and it makes a much bigger mess than needed. I would never buy this ice cream maker again. I am looking for a plastic bucket model. ![]() |
