Others say...

"Almost perfect....almost. Not for hard floors."
I was looking to replace a cheapy Dirt Devil that wasn't picking up like it used to.

As we recently added a dog to our family I wanted one with HEPA filtration. I also have a lot of hard floors (tile & wood) so I wanted something that would work well on bare floors.

Out of the box: It's easy to assemble and get started. You will be vacuuming in less than 30 minutes. Its important to read the instruction manual about the filters and cleaning schedule.

It's a heavy solid piece. All of the plastic feels solid and well built. The wand attachment is wonderful but I have to use it too much (more on that in a moment). The headlight is dim and doesn't really light much on the floor. More like a headlight letting the pets know your coming. The motor is very quiet and a nice change from the less powerful vac I upgraded from. The Power switch is oddly placed but you get used to it pretty quickly.

However, the "Hard floor" switch is difficult to use especially when transitioning between rooms with/without carpeting. Hard floors are the weakness of this vac. On tile it is practically impossible to pick up small particles and cat litter. Wood floors are only slightly better.

There is no provision for picking up in corners. That is unacceptable in a vac of this price. My old cheapy picked up very well in corners on the right side. So you are forced to use the wand a lot. Since my house is mostly hardwood I must use the wand for at least 50% of the vacuuming. Not fun.

On the plus side it does an excellent job on carpets. However, throw rugs are an issue as the vacuum is so strong it sucks them off the floor. I love the HEPA filtration. I truly do see a small reduction in the amount of dust in the house.

The bagless feature is great and is of sufficient volume that you don't have to dump it after every room. I usually get two full vacuumings in before I dump the canister. The filters are holding up well and haven't needed to be cleaned or changed yet. That's good because the replacements are expensive as compared to a bag. Of course they are filtering a lot more dust & dirt than a bag can.

Overall I am very happy with the quality of the product. However, it really isn't up to the task on hardwood or tile floors. I would be ecstatic with this vac if I had wall to wall carpeting.

Pros:
Quality look and feel
Strong motor
Quiet
Very stylish design

Cons:
Doesn't work on hard floors
Heavy
Weak headlight

Carpet/hardwood switch difficult to use

"Looooove it!"
I was initially VERY impressed with my vacuum purchase, but after having a vacuum that hadn't been working right for MONTHS, I figured anything that actually picked up dirt would look like a 5 star machine. Now I've owned my vacuum for 3 months and I still love it so I figured it was time to write the review. First of all, the machine is huge and heavy so if you're looking for a light, little vacuum to tote around, up and down stairs, this may not be the one for you! It does have a handle in comfortable spot to carry it up stairs, but its no lightweight. It reminds me of the robot from Lost in Space - which cracks me up everytime I go to use it (since I really dont like vacuuming, its nice to start the chore with a smile!). When I first started using I had to empty the dirt container after every use and twice in the room where my dog likes to sleep - probably because it worked so much better than my old vacuum! Now I often empty after each use, but I dont have to. I have a day care in my home, so between kids' spills, parents tracking in, and regular dirt, I use my vacuum frequently - at least once each day. I have been very pleased with the performance of this vacuum and would recommend it to anyone.

"Ouch!! this one really sucks!!"
Unbelievable how this vacuum sucks up dog and cat hair. I vacuumed with my old vacuum just as the new one came in. I just ran the new one for a minute and had a full canister of pet hair?!?

The canister fills up fast, but that would not keep me from buying another one!

"Piece of Junk"
I used this for 10 minutes and was impressed that it was sucking up so much. The Owner's Guide isn't that useful so I struggled to get the brush to work on the carpet (you have to switch a toggle back and forth). Finally I did and it worked well. Then I sucked up the fringe of a rug by mistake. I do that sometimes with my other two vacuums, and I just turn them off and it's not big deal. But with the Eureka I IMMEDIATELY smelled burning rubber! Horrified, I quickly turned it off. I turned it back on and the roller brush wouldn't turn. Long story short, I unscrewed the bottom and realized 1) the roller was not new (lots of scaring) and 2) the BELT was broken! It just arrived today! You have to be kidding me - now I need to take it in, or return it. I'm am very upset about this. Also, this vacuum is VERY HEAVY!! Not worth it if you have a house with wood floors and area rugs -- too much switching between settings.

"ROCKS!"
I was skeptical of bagless vacuums, but at my wife's insistence I got it, and I am impressed!

It has suction, and the HEPA filter really cleans the air in the house.

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs, and this has made a great improvement in air quality and cleanliness.

What our customer's say!

"Eureka - too much work!", After reading all the reviews I could find I bought this vacuum at Walmart last year. It has turned into a family joke because it is such a nightmare to use. It is unbelievably heavy and cumbersome. My carpets are two years old and even with vacuuming weekly I have to clean the filters every couple of weeks. It often cuts off after a few minutes of vacuuming from (?)overheating despite cleaning every filter on the thing - which is messy and a pain in the neck. I've had it in for service twice but each time they tell me "nothing is wrong". What is wrong is that I purchased the wrong vacuum. Steer clear- there are better vacuums on the market that weigh less, do a better job. I'm ashamed to give mine away to some other poor soul.

"This vacuum cleaner sucks.... and sucks.", I purchased this vacuum cleaner about half a year ago, and it is still working extremely well. I previously had another Eureka Whirlwind vacuum cleaner (some earlier model I purchased about 5 years ago); well, my previous model kept clogging, and clogging so I definitely needed something new. So, as you can imagine I was a little bit apprehensive about purchasing another Eureka; however, have no fear... this machine is awesome.

To be quite honest, I put a lot of credence in the reviews and opinions of other reviewers... and I think most everybody was dead-on right. This vacuum definitely has good sucking power. I think that a price you pay for this is the fact that the machine really wants to go... albeit it is not really 'that' difficult to handle. Weight wise, it is a little bit heavier than my previous vacuum (but realistically not that much more)... besides, with that weight you definitely get really good stability while vacuuming and utilizing the accessories.

The carpet/hard floor switch is an awesome shift when you need to do hard floors. I must admit, though, that this is not the best unit for getting edges. The accessories are easy to use. And most important, I've had absolutely no problems with the unit; someone wrote about a suction problem... they should probably check to ensure that they seated the canister properly.

"fantastic", I've had this vacuum for several months now and am still very pleased. I'm not one to get excited about housework or anything related, but this vacuum is fantastic. We have two large dogs and I have to say, the dust is down a bit and the carpets have lost that "dog smell".

I could not believe the amount of filth that came out of my carpets. I called people, I was like an info-mercial for this thing -- it really sucks up the dirt.

This vacuum is great on large carpeted areas. It works well on area rugs too, but watch the height settings, if it is too low it really puts the wear and tear on the rug edges. As stated in other reviews, the drawbacks are that you have to use the attachments if you really want to get carpet edges and corners. Also, it is not the best on bare floors and the floor setting switch is a bit hard to turn (I thought I was breaking it the first time I changed settings).
These drawbacks are minor in comparison to the amount of crud this thing gets out of my home. I don't even mind the frequency of emptying the container -- I am glad each time that all that stuff is no longer in my carpet ( you will be amazed!).
Last thing, if you do not like to actually touch dirt, I wouldn't recommend a bagless. There is contact with the dirt while cleaning the filters and emptying the container. However, if overall cleanliness is for you, then so is this vacuum. This vacuum picks up like no bag having vacuum ever could. I love it.

"The best vacuum cleaner I have ever owned or used!", Before I purchased this vacuum cleaner, I looked up several on Amazon.com and read the reviews. I was most impressed with the reviews and ratings for this one and also the 4885 which has a couple more bells and whistles but is apparently the same model, otherwise.

I tried to find the 4880 locally, and no one had ever heard of it! I was told it was an "old model," things like that. Actually, according to the Eureka WEBsite, it's quite a new model. Anyway, I decided to purchase from Amazon.com so I ordered, and it came in just a very few days, faster than promised.

Well, everything the other reviewers have said is absolutely true! The first time I vacuumed my house, I got three cupfuls of dirt and pet hair; I had to empty the dirt cup and rinse out the filters three times! I didn't know whether to cheer or throw up! By the way, the dirt cup is large and both the cup and the two filters that are removable are easy to get out of the machine, rinse out, and put back in. Be sure to use your spray attachment on your sink to get all the dirt out, and also let all the pieces dry COMPLETELY before you put them back into the machine.

The Hepa filter is the third filter. It's not removable/rinsable, and should be replaced about twice a year according to directions. Not much gets clear through to the Hepa filter, though, because the two other filters precede it.

Here's another tip. Run the cord up through the looped handle before you plug it in. That will hold the cord up and out of the way better than you can achieve with most other vacuum cleaners. I figured that out myself; it's not in the instructions. By the way, the instructions are clear, simple, and well illustrated.

As others have said, the machine is heavy, but the rollers seem to pull it forward though it is technically not self-propelled. It is smooth and quiet to use. It does not have edge-clean so you will either have to use the attachments for that purpose or use your handvac which is what I do.

This is a VERY satisfying product to use, quite fun, actually. I was suspicious about what my last vacuum cleaner was leaving in my carpet, and now I KNOW!

After reading the many previous reviews, I was sure this was the vacuum cleaner I wanted, and now that I have used it for a few days, I know I was absolutely right. If you have pets or a woodstove as we do, two dogs and a cat, plus bringing wood in through the house, this vacuum cleaner is one you should consider very seriously. My husband was annoyed with me for wanting to replace our old vac, but he is believer, now.

Amazon.com reviews of products really help keep the buyer from making bad purchase mistakes. It's a wonderful service. Thank you, Amazon.com!

"One of the best bagless vacs you can buy", The Eureka Ultra Whirlwind 4880 is the most powerful vacuum we have ever owned. The suction is unbelievable. More importantly, it maintains its suction much longer than other bagless and bagged models because of a superior cyclonic design. A very important reason for this vacuum's exceptional performance is the diameter of the hose - it is probably larger than any other upright on the market. That goes a long way in creating a tremendous amount of airflow. It also means that suction performance with the on-board attachments is terrific.

Our house is about 95% carpet and we vacuum every 2-3 days. We are still happy with our other vacuum - a Eureka Ultra Smart Vac 4870 (an excellent bagged-model) that we've had for about two years, but wanted a bagless. I filled up the entire dirt cup after vacuuming the whole house. I'm sure it would have been much more if we weren't already using the 4870 (which has almost as much suction as the 4880).

The vacuum is on the heavy side (22 lbs), but it actually seems to push a little easier than the 4870 (21 lbs). Performance on any pile carpet is exemplary - certainly better than most other uprights and canisters. We also shut off the brush-roll (a great feature) and use it to vacuum the kitchen and bathrooms. Any loose debris is easily sucked up, sometimes from several inches in front of the vacuum. This model is also much quieter than other uprights I've used (Dirt Devil, Hoover, Oreck).

A well-respected vacuum shop owner/repairman/collector (Tom Gasko) suggested that the 4880 was the best bagless vacuum available...

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Exceeded my expectations", Lots of research pointed to this model (or the 4885 which is the same with an electronic dirt sensor). I have to say I was impressed when I got it.

It's quieter than I was expecting, seems reasonably well designed and is very powerful. I used my 10 amp Hoover with a nearly empty bag to carefully vacuum my bedroom. Then I went over the same carpet right after with the Eureka and was amazed at what was in the brand new dirt cup! I'm talking about A LOT of dirt and this was an upstairs bedroom in a fairly new house. This thing obviously cleans a whole lot better than my Hoover!

The "dual cup" design is interesting. It somehow puts the really fine dust into a smaller tube alongside the large cup. The bigger dirt and carpet fuzz all end up in the big cup. The pre-filter catches most of what's left before it goes throught he motor and out the HEPA filter.

Other pluses include the HEPA filter. The air is much cleaner after using this vac than with the Hoover. Furniture seems to stay less dusty as well. So far, the back (dirt) side of the HEPA filter is still quite clean. I suspect it will last a long time.

Another big reason for buying this vac was the off switch for the brush. That makes it much more effective for cleaning hard surface floors as the brush isn't trying to fling the dirt across the floor.

Pluses for this vac include the washable pre-filter. Some models don't have one (which means you'll be buying lots of expensive filters). The hose is very high quality and larger and more stretchable than most. The accessories are stored right on the vac (an extendable wand, small brush and crevice tool). The dirt cup design works well. It's quite stable when using it with the hose (i.e. it won't fall over like some do). And it's fairly easy to push and has a wider cleaning path than most (which means you get done sooner).

There are some downsides. The handle is hard to push back to the upright position as this also turns off the brush and the mechanism to do that is somewhat stiff. Likewise, the foot release for the handle is also stiff. The whole vac is also quite heavy. There's no handle in the front so it's especially awkward to use on stairs. Most of the fancy and powerful HEPA vacs are heavy, however. I just wish they'd put a handle below the dirt cup (there's one on the back side down low but it doesn't work on stairs). The pre-filter could be bigger as you have to clean it every few times you empty the dirt cup.

It also doesn't clean to the edges as well as some vacs. Eureka doesn't advertis edge cleaning and if you look at the design, it clearly doesn't even try. So you need to use the crevice tool for that now and then. Finally, it would be nice if they would have included a standard surface cleaning attachment to use on furniture, stairs, etc.

The more expensive 4885 has a dirt sensor that supposedly tells you when the vac is no longer picking up more dirt (i.e. the carpet is clean). It also has a sensor to tell you when to change/clean the filters. The manual, however, warns the dirt sensor doesn't work well with newer carpet because the "fuzz" (loose fibers) in new carpet will trigger it even when the carpet is clean. Otherwise the two models are identical (and share the same owner's manual).

Overall, this vac is a lot quieter than the Hoovers, I can't imagine anything cleaning better, and short of its weight and bulk, it's reasonably easy to live with and use. The HEPA filter is great and does a better job than ANY bag vac at keeping the air clean and not re-distributing your dirt.
