"Old School." I remember when I was around 13yrs old my parents had this grill and waffle maker and I used it every opportunity I got. Well my co-workers and I wanted to by a grill to make grill cheese and I stumble upon it and I had to purchase it brought back memories now @ 37yrs. old. It works wonderful, some old school product are still the best like this one... "Very easy to clean" I'm really happy with this unit. I've wanted a waffle maker for a while, but it was hard to justify the expense and kitchen real estate for such a limited-used appliance. I jumped on this one as soon as I saw it, since it really is 3-in-1. It works great as a waffle iron; the waffles are thin and cook just right. I actually use it most for sandwiches, as it makes any regular sandwich suddenly much tastier in just a few minutes. It also works well as a griddle, and I have made pancakes and eggs on it. I can't say enough about how great the removable plates are for cleaning. They are remarkably nonstick in the first place, but taking them off and cleaning them is incredibly easy. It's a snap to switch between the waffle side and the grill/griddle side, too. In short, I find myself leaving this out on my counter and using it all the time, due to the multi-functionality and the ease of cleaning. I highly recommend it. Shortly after I became an adult, the heating element of hers finally died and I was left waffle-less for several years. Then I found this. I was happy. I don't know how, but the quality has changed dramatically over the years, despite looking essentially the same. My mother's/grandmother's waffles NEVER stuck to the plates--even a few times when they were left in until completely charred, they peeled right out without any trouble. THIS product, however, has the ability to permanently glue any substance into its tiny crevices, regardless of how well cooked. Even better is the fact that BOTH plates have equal sticking power, making it such that every time you open the iron expecting a waffle, you instead get a view of the inside of what should have been your waffle. Others have mentioned that no amount of oil will prevent sticking--I'd like to qualify that: if you use 2-8 tbsp of crisco on each plate prior to making 1-2 sets of waffles, you will _probably_ be able to peel at least the first one off. What our customer's say! "View the uneven heating", I'm planning to purchase two of these irons. One for us and one for my son who also remembers the one handed down from my parents that looks just like this one. I think ours was a "GE" and maybe they sold the rights to B&D. The reviews mention flimsy -- what isn't today? Anyway, the customer image of the cooked waffle shows a shortcoming that may be difficult to overcome. If you look at the brownness of the cooked waffle you will notice a ring right around the waffle that is darker. That indicates the heat in that area was higher than in the rest of the plate. My suggestion would be to preheat the iron longer and with the lid closed. This will allow the entire metal plate to become more uniform and hopefully produce a more even color and "doneness" to the product. Since a "next" waffle will be started after the instant one has cooked long enough to drive off the moisture it should also have allowed the plates to get back to a fairly uniform temperature but a short empty reheat might help. Gordon P., P.E. "We love this waffle iron", This grill and waffle baker replaces one we have had for several years that was never satisfactory. We returned one like it believing the thermostat was broken and received an identical replacement with the same problem. (This was dealing with another department store.) After several years without waffles, my husband began to crave them again, we so ordered the Black and Decker. It heats up in about 7 minutes and each batch of pancakes is done beautifully in about 5 minutes after being placed on the hot grids. We really enjoy using it. "yayayayaya!", I have one of these. It's from 30 years ago. My dad would make waffles in it. When he passed, I insisted on keeping it. This makes the small-hole waffles which are great for butter. The orange light on front tells when it's at temperature. This doubles as a "done cooking" light. There's a knob on the front for baking temperature. Hotter makes it more crispy outside and gooey inside. Cooler makes it dry out more but take longer to cook. The plates flip to allow you to make a grilled cheese sandwich, or pannini type goodies very quickly, without the stripes. The finish is stainless steel. The unit overall is durable, easy to use, and easy to clean. The only minus is, since it's metal on the outside, it gets hot. If you're clumbsy, or your kids like to reach up, then you might want one that's mostly plastic on the outside. "China Junk", Black and Decker used to be good. Their products were well designed and quality built. This product supports "not any more". The product is cheap and flimsey. I didn't even bother to plug it in. I contacted Amazon who graciously took the item back. Forunately B & D has not messed with DeWalt, Porter Cable and Delta too much eventhough my Delta hybrid saw did have some problems upon delivery. I had to give the product a star (system requirement) eventhough it doesn't deserve one. "Sticky", Works well but I find that the batter is constantly sticking to the "nonstick" surface. Even reoiling has not helped, so my next step is to change recipes and see if that helps. 
Read this reviews before You buy... "Good, but not the best...", I read a lot of reviews on waffle makers before I purchased this one. The waffle maker is pretty much as described, but the one thing I would have liked to have known was the fact that the "waffle wells" were not that deep. I like waffles that have DEEP "holes" so that I can get more syrup on each waffle, plus it makes the waffle itself crunchier. This waffle maker also makes a smaller waffle than what I'm used to. Otherwise it is a great product! The waffle does indeed come out much easier than some waffle makers -- I think that is because the waffle "holes" are not so deep. Pops right out! :-) I like the on/off button and the light. It's a really pretty maker, too. Easy to clean as well, since you can take the grill/waffle plates out. "Not Good -", I ordered this after my waffle iron's heating element gave up the ghost. When it arrived I was more than disappointed. The quality of the waffle maker was poor. The hinges seemed as if they would fall off with a good shake. The inside of the the waffle iron was very shallow and the size of the "4" waffles it would supposedly make would have been smaller than slices of diet bread. I returned it unused. "versital, quick, easy", I have now used this iron about 6 times. We have cooked gluten free (and wheat batter) items in it easily, no sticking. Grilling and waffles come out evenly cooked. Cleaning is easy. Outside gets hot, so use the handles. Only improvement I can think of is if the indicator light was brighter, or it would "beep" when a waffle is done. My kids get so excited, and want use the grill or make a waffle out of everything... We have not cooked much meat on it, but ham and sausage cooked up fine. We purchased it on sale, so we could not be happier with this product! "Perfect for Paninis", I've never owned either panini maker or waffle maker so keep this in mind when reading this review.. it means that I'm not comparing it to other products owned in the past. I'm reviewing this product based on my own requirement and not on anything else. My requirements and desires for this product were 1) makes a good panini quickly (about once a week for 1 or 2 people, not a family) 2) washable plates 3) inexpensive 4) option for making waffles if ever I wanted to try. The machine has fulfilled all of the requirements above. As I've only dabbled with the wafflemaking option, I won't rate its performance on waffle-making - strictly on panini-making. Warm up - it takes around 10 minutes for this machine to pre-heat the metal plates. Once the machine is pre-heated it is quite hot which makes for quick work of panini making. However note that the exterior metal of the machine also gets very hot and you must take care not to touch anywhere except the black plastic parts after the machine has been turned on. Because of this, I would caution parents not to have small children anywhere near this device when it's on. Additionally, as other reviewers have noted, the plates are fastened to the device by metal clips and could have been constructed better. I would have been more comfortable if the clips held the plates snugger. Although I've never had an experience of the plates coming declipped, the wiggle room of the clips does contribute to nervousness and caution that although may be wholly psychological is not especially welcome. Panini-Making - Once the griddle is heated, the sandwich is inserted and pressed. The B&D machine performs quickly, evenly heating sandwiches and leaving a tasty crust layer. What I like best about it is that when some of the fillings spill out of the sandwich and onto the grill (leaving what one would expect to be a gooey mess), it's actually quite easy to clean. I just let the plates cool and by then, the "goo" which sometimes contains hard to remove cheese - comes right off without much effort. All and all, the machine has met all of my requirements and I am happy with it. So, in a nutshell: Pros: Easy to clean, portable, does a good job making paninis. Like the looks of it. Removable plates. Gets hot. Cons: Clips holding plates could be stiffer. Exterior of machine gets hot. Not best for household with small children. "Black and Decker Waffle maker", Love it! This product is for adults only as it does get hot. Makes beutiful waffles and pancakes. |
