"Great coffee / Good pot - update 2008" Update 4/10/08 - Still going great three years after I bought it - and not one broken knob. (old review) I've had this pot for over a year and love it. Fast, hot, great tasting coffee which stays hot and fresh for a long time. I bought it after my last electric perk had died at age 10 years because I loved the looks of it, and there were limited choices at the brick-and-mortars. I read all the reviews only after I bought it. The reviewers' major complaint is about the plastic knob cracking. Yes, the plastic knob is poorly-designed and is the only reason I give this pot 4 stars instead of 5. The designer should have known that users would take the lid off the pot by using the knob. However, it is completely possible to remove the lid without touching the knob at all. Just pop the lid by pushing in and up near where the lid meets the pot. This is what I've been doing since I bought the pot and I've had absolutely no problems with the knob. It's unlikely you'll need to remove the lid while the coffee is still hot, so you can avoid burned fingertips. A secondary complaint is about grounds in the coffee. I've never had this problem; I suspect users who have are either not careful when spooning the coffee into the basket, or they are using the wrong grind. It's important with any percolator to use a percolator grind, or "FAC" 'for all coffeemakers' grind. "Very poor design" It seems that there is always something crappy in a good design. The pot does a good job perking coffee, but the lid and the glass top are bad and enough to void the use of the pot. I think that Melitta should send out, for nothing the glass top. I am like the other reviews, I would not buy another Melitta product unless they make good on this pot. There is a danger of the top blowing out and Melitta could be in for law suits. "worked great - for six months." What more needs to be said? Followed all instructions and yet I am now having to look for a new percolator. How exactly do companies keep making garbage products and we buy them? "Great Coffee Until The Bulb Breaks" Allow me to be the 30th person to say that the lid is terrible. My bulb (the plastic thing on top) finally broke after a year, and about 10 hours of searching later, I still can't find a replacement. The coffee was great, but not good enough to make up for the crappy lid. "Here's how to get a new plastic top" I love my Java Perk, but I loved it a lot more before it blew its top. Here's how I got a new top. I called 800-947-3744 and gave the nice lady there my mailing address and my credit card number. She charged me $4.86 and shipped a new top to me. (At least I think she did. I just got off the phone with her.) The 800 number is for Toastmaster/Salton, the people who contract to have the Java Brew MEP 10 made in China. Oh, the nice lady wants to know the number engraved on the very bottom of your pot, and when you bought it, how much you paid, and so forth. BUT she can live without that info. If you bought your percolator recently, I suspect your fragile plastic top will be covered by warranty.

What our customer's say! "Great Coffee Maker -but it breaks after a year", This is my all-time favorite coffee maker. It brews fantastic coffee within five minutes, and it's very easy to clean. And since it doesn't use coffee filters, it saves a bit of money in the long run...sort of. This leads to the two reasons I didn't give this percolator five-stars. The first is that the clear top is plastic. Elementary physics/chemistry dictates an almost inevitable outcome when plastic is subjected to a hot liquid over a period of time. So after about a year the clear top of my percolator became brittle, broke off, rendering the whole thing unusable. So here I am ordering another one. Second, it doesn't have an automatic shut off, so you'll need to make sure you unplug it every time you use it. I got into the habit of unplugging the percolator as soon as my coffee finished brewing - so I wouldn't have to remember to unplug it later. That withstanding, I really do recommend this coffee maker. Just remember to unplug it, and expect a year or so of use. "Mount Vesuvious", Put on the coffee, went out for a newspaper and came back to find the pot had cracked the cheap plastic top and was spewing coffee to the ceiling like Mt. Vesuvious. The top is now jammed into the lid and held in place with duct tape. Went to Macy's, Target and Ace. No replacement tops. Designer of pot should have to stand naked under it with legs spread. Why not a glass top? "Good news first", I loveD this coffee maker. deliberate "D" Problem is it has begun acting up after only 1.5 years-ish. And now I am sad. As the othre rater wrote best coffee maker ever - I agreed.. but now. It has stopped working correctly. How sad. "Wonderful Coffee", I bought my percolator a few months ago and have enjoyed it very much. I read the other reviews which helped tremendously with the do's and don'ts of this item. This will help: 1) Never lift the lid off by the glass knob. Wait until the pot is cool, then pull by the top rim with dry hands. 2) Wet the inner basket before adding ground coffee and don't grind coffee beans too finely. This will prevent grounds in your cup. 3) Treat it gently and it will give you the best coffee you have ever tasted every time. "Great machine. Poor after-sales service", This is the best coffee maker ever. I have spent 40 years brewing coffee every morning, using a whole variety of machines. This is the easiest and makes fantastic coffee with very little effort. If you buy a cheap wall-outlet type timer, you can also set this to brew coffee before you get out of bed. Great! (That goes for most brewers/percolators, - obviously). However.. if the transparent plastic knob breaks, then you are sc**wed, because eSalton (Melitta) has no means to contact them. Their toll free number is useless: it gives you three options, the third is for spare parts, but when you choose 3 you return to the three choices again! (Pressing 0 will disconnect you). So.. great machine but no parts service, so I guess that if your lid is slightly damaged, then buy another $60 percolator!!! ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "An accident waiting to happen", My husband an I recently purchased this appliance. After the cheap plastic top cracked and blew off (spewing hot coffee all over) I repeatedly emailed Melitta but have been ignored. And yes, the metal top is impossible to open. No more Melitta products for us. "Too Pooped to Perk!", Well, this nicely designed pot is great on looks, but it's lifespan is not very long. Like the others reviewers said, the clear plastic top broke and so did ours. After just a little over a year, the pot will not get the water hot enough to perk. Only luke warm water results and thus it doesn't perculate. YES, WE DID START OFF BY PUTTING 'COLD' ONLY WATER IN IT!! All electric coffee makers require cold water to start (in case any of you don't know this.) The pot is used once a day....taken good care of, so there is no reason for it to break down so quickly. Salton, Inc. makes this pot, so we might all want to contact them about this problem and perhaps those of you who need new plastic tops can order a replacement from them. We were very disappointed with this pot. "I think this coffee pot is awesome!!!!", I have owned my percolator for about two or three years now. I've never had any trouble with the plastic top breaking off - don't know if other people just happened to get defective models or what and have never had trobule getting the lid off ever. You just grab the top handle which is made for this purpose - again maybe some other people got a bad model. The only downside I've found is that my guests will get to the pot first and pour their coffee with the grounds still in the basket - yum - crunchy!! So dump them\ basket out quickly!! "Melitta Java Perk MEP10", I love our 10 cup percolator purchased at Target more than any other drip brewer coffeemaker. The taste of the coffee, especially the organic coffee, is superb, unlike the watered-down coffee you get at restaurants. "Disapointed", We loved this pot when we bought it. The design, the taste and temperature of the coffee; but like everyone else our joy was short lived. The cheap plastic top snapped off after 3 months. I have not contacted the company, but I will be doing so shortly. I wish I had read these reviews before I went shopping. ![]() |
