Others say...

"Great first ice cream maker. "
Often a complaint is that the ice cream is too soft. This can be the fault of the recipe rather than the ice cream maker. Even then, you can still just freeze it for longer afterwards. We have had great results with ours.

"Great ice cream maker"
I work in the renewable energy field so I love being able to hand crank my ice cream (never mind all the electricity used to freeze the container - I'll solar power that some day). Donvier makes it a breeze to make ice cream and so fun to be able to choose your own flavors. I like handcranking and it only takes 20 minutes or so of pretty much inattentive cranking. I have not experienced problems of overfreezing resulting in a stuck paddle. I think the critical time that it could get stuck is the first few minutes so remember to crank consistently at the beginning. Clean up is easy. I either rinse right away with warm water (risking my skin getting stuck to the tub) or let it warm up and wash. Then I stick the tub back in the freezer for at least overnight. My favorite ice cream so far is Caramel Chocolate Pecan.

"Plain fun!"
I bought this because I'm lactose intolerant and the grocery store offers few soy ice cream options. I've made numerous creative soy ice creams and they always come out great. The only down side is the canister takes up a good chunk of room in the freezer and I have to plan ahead at least 24 hours to freeze it.

"Delicious and Fun"
This ice cream maker is simple to use and makes delicious soft-serve style ice cream in about 30 minutes. You just need to store the mixing bowl in your freezer for at least 12 hours and whip up a base made from cream, milk, eggs and sugar, which takes about 5 minutes, and then add vanilla, M&M's, chocolate chips, etc...whatever you like. My kids have fun turning the handle every 3 to 4 minutes until the ice cream is done. It's that simple. I recommend buying the Ben and Jerry's Cookbook to go with this because it offers a no-cook base recipe as well as several creative recipe ideas.

This maker is a fun way to bring the family together to make a delicious treat. Clean-up is simple! I would definitely buy this maker again. Amazon offers free shipping on this one, so I don't believe there's a better deal out there.

"Easy and efficient"
I have had a Donvier ice cream maker for 5 years and have never been dissapointed with it. I leave the empty insert in the freezer when not in use just waiting for the impulse to make some ice cream.

We can have fresh ice cream or sorbet in short order. I just give the paddle a turn every so often while I'm making lunch or dinner and by the time we finish eating our meal it's ready. Very easy cleanup.

What our customer's say!

"quick, easy, ice cream", The product works great. I ended up buying one for my brother and uncle as well. There are a few secrets to its use.
1. It needs to be in the freezer longer than it says, I put mine in the freezer in May and don't take it out until October.
2. Don't use any of the recipes that come with it.
3. The cooler the ingredients the quicker it freezes up.
4. Basically I googled ice cream recipes and wen with the easiest.
Here's an easy way. Frozen fruit, vanilla yogurt (yogurt makes things freeze up quick for some reason), sugar, milk (evaporated, condensed or regular), put it in a blender then add to machine.

"Great and versatile! Read below for a few tips...", I purchased this ice cream maker because my aunt had told me it was a great tool to have. She was right :-) So far I have made chocolate and espresso gelato and vanilla ice cream. I haven't tried sorbet, frozen yogurt or sherbert, but intend to soon. My aunt just mixes up some frozen fruit and juice in a blender and adds it to the ice cream maker until it's sorbet consistency.

A FEW TIPS:

1) The directions say wait 2-3 minutes between stirs. I wait 2-3 minutes before the first stir, then 4 minutes before the second, then 5 minutes before the third, etc. etc. etc. It is best if you wait longer than 15-20 minutes total, though, but I normally just play it by ear--just keep looking at the ice cream and checking the consistency visually. you can tell when it's done becuase it won't be liquidy any more. Between stirs, you don't need to set a timer or anything, just estimate and if you try stiring and it's easy to stir, wait longer. It should be relativley tough to stir--that means you're scraping the frozen ice cream off the sides of the container so the rest can freeze.

2) The recipes in the booklet all make 1 qt. of ice cream/sorbet, etc. I found that you can fit a 1-1/2 batch in the ice cream maker just fine. 1 batch makes enough for 2-3 people, but when you're feeding a family of 5 dessert, it's not enough :-)

3) I was dissapointed when I saw that some of the ice cream recipes say 'refrigerat overnight.' I thought I could just decide on a whim 'I want ice cream' and make it right away. It does take time, but you can find recipes that you don't have to refrigerate overnight. Just look online or in a cookbook. Most say 'cool thorougly.' You just have to make sure it's cold enough that it won't warm up the ice cream maker. A few hours should be enough in most cases. Just test the temperature with your finger.

Overall, it's a great machine. I adapted the directions a little bit, and found it works better my way :-) but it's definatley worth the 50 bucks. Although milk and cream are pretty pricy, you can make sorbet and sherbert for much less.

"fantastic",
this is great no ice or salt no mess and works fast. We love this thing

"Overall pleased", Overall, I am very pleased with this product. There is one thing that concerns me . . . the handle is plastic, and when I turn the handle, I am concerned that one of these times it will break. Also, I looked for a little larger ice cream maker with these same qualities. Either I did not see it, or it is not available.

"Donvier", This is the easiest ice cream maker ever! It doesn't make a huge amount, but it is so simple, quick and easy. It is the perfect size for our family. Just pour the ingredients in the frozen bowl, put the lid on, stir it every few minutes and after about 20 minutes, you have frozen homemade ice cream!

"I love the Donvier!", Well, I do. It is simple to use and requires only the ingredients for the ice cream (no rock salt, etc.). Chill the ice cream base mix first and put the cylinder in a cold freezer. I just leave the cylinder in the chest freezer for storage. I have had mine for 10 years. No problems. Stir upon adding the first set of ingredients, and then get a feel for how frequently thereafter. I find that you cannot overstir. I can give this the necessary stirring whilst preparing other food or doing dishes. I am not at all bothered by the time commitment. The ice cream yield is about 6 good size servings. I will do a half recipe next time. After the initial 20 minutes, the ice cream is soft, so just freeze the whole cylinder, per the instructions, for about 30 minutes. Then, using a wooden utensil, get the ice cream out. I was able to get relatively hard ice cream. Frozen leftovers will indeed be hard. Let them warm on the counter. They are pretty good as well, although nothing beats the fresh ice cream. In addition to interesting ingredients, including quality dark chocolate, I can control the amount of sugar (sometimes using Splenda) and the fat (milk, skim, half and half, cream). It tastes better than any store bought.

"Perfect for us", I received a 1 pint Donvier for Mother's Day. It's fabulous! Just the right amount for myself and my husband, but I now want the 1 quart size as well.
The canister lives in the freezer and is ever ready for our whim, company, or grandkids. Our freezer gets the canister so cold it can get difficult to stir - no problem! We just stir more often than every 2 minutes.
After years with a White Mountain hand crank that makes 1/2 gallon, requires ice and salt and muscles and endurance, this is a dream. It's almost TOO easy!
We are in a rural area with a small market and limited ice cream choices (Ice cream isn't quite the same after the hour drive from town in a cooler), but now we have our favorite flavors, gourmet quality, whenever we like.
Highly recommended.

"Donvier ice cream maker", While not as easy as it appears, and more time consuming than expected, the quality of the end product is very good, so I give it 4 stars.

"Donvier Ice Cream Maker", Friends and family love the ice cream and it's quick and easy as long as you remember to pre-freeze the container. The only downside is that it only makes enough for 4 generous servings or 6 small ones.

"There are better options", I owned one of these a couple years ago and decided to sell it at a garage sale. Like others have said, you can keep the bowl in the freezer and make ice cream whenever you want to. However, I found that I rarely wanted to stand there and turn the crank by hand for that many minutes. There are several much better options. Cuisinart came out with an electric powered unit. And KitchenAid makes an attachment for their stand mixes. I own the Cuisinart double bowl model. We absolutely love it and no more sore arms!
