Others say...
"fast hot water" I can't say about durability over years because I've only had it for a month, but its everything I hoped for -- the automatic shut off works, but sometimes it seems like it shuts off well after the water has been boiling for a while. I have no problems with spilling when pouring. Overall very useful. "I love it!!!" I saw this on Good Eats and Googled that and electric kettle and found it. I don't drink hot drinks that often but I use it for brewing tea for iced tea and also for iced coffee drinks. I also hard cook eggs in it. The wide mouth is better than the kettles with smaller openings. The auto-off feature is a great addition especially for the eggs. Just add a few minutes for soft boiled eggs or a few more for hard cooked. Love it. "Do not purchase this item" I purchased this hot pot for boiling water for coffee. I wanted a full stainless steel interior that would be easy to clean. It was. However, the hot pot had 3 major problems. 1. It did not turn off after the water boiled (did once and never again). This is a major fire hazard. 2. It let off a ton of steam (compared to other hot pots I have had) which started to ruin the paint on my kitchen cabinet above where it was on the counter. 3. The lid on top did not close all the way. I returned the item. "Works great and looks nice" I use a hot pot to boil the water for french press coffee. My old pot died. As I was throwing it away I noticed that it had a good 1/4 iinch of brown mineral deposits at the bottom. Yuck. That won't happen with this one because the lid opens wide enough to clean inside it. It also lets you fill it up more quickly. I've had it for a couple of months and it works fine. I also like that the cord winds around a keeper hidden in the base so you only need to let out what you need and not add to the cord tangle on the counter. I read some of the other comments and would agree that it pours too wide for a cup. You'd have to be careful. But I'm filling a coffee press so that works to my advantage. "A Great Addition to My Kitchen" I purchased this item after reading "Gear for your kitchen by Alton Brown". The book gives great suggestions for what to look for in good quality and useful kitchen utensils and appliances; and this electric kettle is a good example. The kettle has a fairly large capacity at 1.5 quarts; which is plenty for my needs. I timed it to see how long it took to boil at max capacity and at just under 5 minutes, its definitely better than waiting for a pot on the stove. The kettle is also very easy to clean since the lid opens wide enough to fit your whole hand in it. In the book Alton gives some unorthodox uses for this kettle such as boiling eggs and warming stock besides the obvious uses for coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. I'm basically a tea and hot cocoa guy however, I did try one of Alton's optional uses by boiling eggs in it. It only took 10 min. (5 to boil and 5 to wait) to have a perfectly boiled egg. I am already impressed with this purchase and if i find more optional uses it will only make this purchase a better value. The only cons that this appliance may have is that its stainless steel and not plastic and that it doesn't have an audible timer. The former con is only due to accidental burns by kids, but since i don't have any and i prefer stainless for its durability and heat retaining quality vs plastic its not even a concern. And the audible signal would just be a bonus for me since i do tend to forget things, but its not a worry since it stays hot for some time afterward anyway. This item will be one of my favorites (top 10) in the kitchen.

Chef's Choice 675 International Cordless Electric Hot Pot
Why I buy this one ? - 1500-watt pot boils 1-3/4-quarts water faster than stove or microwave - Perfect for making coffee, tea, soup, hot chocolate - Lifts off power base for cordless pouring; gauge shows water level - 18/10 stainless steel with mirror-finish exterior, brushed-finish interior - Shuts off automatically when water boils or pot becomes dry It's better to buy this one too...
Special offer for you..find the cheapest! What our customer's say! "Common sense and comparison to the Rival (plastic) kettle", The 675 kettle has been used at least once a day for several weeks now (after receiving it as a gift from my folks who love theirs). It has now replaced a plastic Rival kettle that the household has not been sorry to see go. Although the Rival had longterm daily use, the 675 is a welcome addition for mainly one big reason: no spills! The 675 heats liquid quickly, yes, but I simply love the generous pour spout -- we hadn't realized how much we missed fast, dripless pouring. The Rival's interesting spout "hook" design keeps the lid locked down but regular spillage-control (despite slow pouring) was needed. Not fun. In response to comments about lid warpage issues and steam/condensation damage to cabinets, as well as child-safety issues: I would not put what's essentially a water vaporizor under cabinets. Not even with the lid closed (the spout is open). The Rival also puts out lots of steam and, after over two years with two Rivals total, the cabinets are fine because the kettles have been used without cabinetry problems. Regarding heat transference on the outside of the kettle: the 675's not insulated. Yes, it gets hot (about as hot as the toaster). The Rival is similarly hot (I'd say that the Rival's larger heat surface gets hotter than the 675 as the element makes direct contact with the water rather than being of an internal element design). As with other appliances in the kitchen (and bathroom) it would be wise to protect adventurous or unsupervised little hands. Regarding warpage issues with the lid: hopefully any issues will be avoided. We tend to heat the water while the lid is open in order to help gauge when the water is ready. One nice point about the lid: it will stay open until it's closed purposely as the hinge is firm. The unit automatically shuts off when the pot is lifted off of the base (sweet!). For some reason I'm still caught off guard by that. I'm used to turning dial and unplugging the Rival. Regarding the 675's on/off: it's either on or off, temperature variations can't be tweaked (the Rival has a control for simmering -- this one doesn't). All in all it's a great unit. Not the most high-end kettle but certainly gets the job done. "Very useful", I've been using this hot pot for a few months and have no complaints. I use it at least once a day. I hesitated to boil eggs, though, when I saw the opening inside the pot to the water gauge in the handle. What would happen if a raw egg cracked while cooking? Would the liquid egg end up inside the water gauge? How would I ever clean that out? Well, I've had a few eggs crack while cooking - I've found letting a cold egg come to room temperature before cooking it seems to prevent cracks - but never any runny messes. The eggs cook up great by putting them in the pot with water, bringing everything to a boil, then letting the eggs sit in the hot pot with water for 10 minutes. Longer than that gives a tough egg. And no grayish rings in the cooked yokes. I haven't tried peeling eggs like in this short video - http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/07/24/how-to-peel-hard-boiled-eggs-without-peeling.aspx?source=nl - but I have tried using baking soda and have found the eggs do peel in the normal way a bit easier. My only complaint is that small hole inside the pot about 1" from the bottom that I mentioned. No way would I cook soup in the pot because of the cleaning issues I've already mentioned. But the pot hard boils eggs fine and heats water very quickly. Another reviewer mentioned that the spout is poorly designed. The owner's manual says the spout was intentionally designed as it was for ease of pouring. If you aren't paying attention when you are pouring and don't have the spout centered over whatever you are pouring the water into then, yes, the water will spill. I haven't found this to be an issue. I like that the heating element doesn't come in contact with the water so there is no mineral buildup to contaminate my tea. "Awful customer service.", The pot is supposed to auto switch off after the water boils. The auto-shutoff sensor is in the plastic lid and works when the heat builds up. From my very first use of the kettle I learned the greater the gap between the lid and the top rim of the kettle, the longer it takes the auto-shutoff feature to work. If the plastic lid does not stay down, then the auto-shutoff feature will not work. After only a few days of use I returned my unit to Edgecraft for repair or replacement. After about 4 weeks of Edgecraft having my kettle I called to get a status update. They informed me it had been "released" from their review process 10 days previous but they would have to call me back with the status why it is be determined to be defected but no further action taken. Waited 48 hours and did not receive the promised call back so I left a message requesting a status update. No return phone call. Now 3 days after my promised call back I find out they shipped it ground with no explanation why it sat in their hands for 2 weeks with no activity. It seems I had to call them to help them do their job of shipping replacement products. They will tell you it usually takes 4 - 6 weeks to process a return, as if that gives them an excuse to sit around for days letting replacement products collect dust. I use the kettle several times a day. Each day without the kettle is a huge inconvenience. On top of that left a message for a supervisor letting them know of my horrible customer experience and no return phone call again. Hopefully the replaced kettle will work as promised. Buyer beware! Potentially poor product quality and and consistently incompetent customer service. "Not one complaint", Despite mixed reviews I haven't had a single problem with this kettle and I'd buy it again. My tea is ready in 5 minutes flat and the reheat is two minutes. I also tried hard boiled eggs in it, worked great. I would buy this product again. "I have never boiled so much water in my life.", I am an avid tea drinker and had previously used a stove top tea kettle. I now count this among my required devices to continue a civilized existence. I have had it for about 4 months now and I have no idea how I lived life before it. It boils water quite quickly, has not had any hiccups, and gets used 6+ times a day in my house. I don't know what more I could ask of this electric kettle, but it has exceeded all of my expectations. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Chef's Choice 675 International Cordless Electric Hot Pot", Great for using the Alton Brown method of boiling eggs. No more egg shells getting stuck on the egg! Can fit about 6 eggs in. Also brings water to boil in about 5 minutes. "Disappointing", Really 2.5 stars. This kettle boils water very quickly. The pouring spout is poorly designed and dangerous. After a few months of daily use, the auto shut off feature stopped working. Now, it will just boil forever. I'm looking to replace this soon. "great electric kettle", saw it used by my culinary hero, Alton Brown on the show Good Eats. does everything i would want it to --- namely, heat up liquid lightning quick, and stop before a boil. "Great Product - Would Buy Again", I originally bought this model because it was recommended by Alton Brown of the Food Network Show "Good Eats". I shopped around in the price range and decided to go ahead and buy it. It has worked great for us. I must say that I have never owned another electric kettle, so I don't have anything to compare to. This unit heats up the water in a flash and the most important thing for me is the auto shut off. (I tend to forget that I turned the water on) Perhaps an audible ding would be nice to alert me that it was done and/or turning off. We have hard water where we live and build up was a concern, but it cleans up like a dream. The wide mouth lid makes cleaning easy. Still looks brand new after 3 months. I would buy it again. "Chef's choice wrong choice", This is not the product I thought it would be and it is a total disapointment ![]() |
