"My fault, not the mixer's"
I was given this mixer for Christmas after yearning for one (apparently rather loudly) for many months. I pulled the beautiful machine out of the box (good workout) and looked at it reverently, then set about mixing up a loaf of bread. Normally I'm the sort of person who reads directions, etc. I did read and follow the directions on mixing bread dough, but for some unknown reason the bowl rocked and bumped and banged on its hinges, and I thought, "what a ridiculous design! This can't be right!" I was getting ready to call up the company when I thought to read through a few of these reviews and got to one MANY reviews down that sighed over the fact that people blame the machine for loud noises coming from the bowl when in fact they simply have not read the directions properly. Ding! The bowl does fit down over two knobs on the sides, but this does not hold it stable. There is a simple locking mechanism at the back, in the middle of the bowl. After reading the review, I ran into the kitchen, snapped the thing into place, and now it's as solid as you please. Needless to say, I'm feeling quite silly, but I am generally a relatively intelligent person, so thought perhaps others could use a tip on this point. Sigh.

"Steel 'Dust' in our food !"
Since we have children with 'tricky' food allergies, we feel safer making ALL of our bread, pizza dough, cookies, cakes, pasta, etc at home... My wife was interested in Kitchen Aid, so I bought her the top of the line Pro 6 as I knew she would be using the machine extensively and she needed something reliable and robust. A month ago, we started getting small amounts of 'steel dust' in our bread... at first we thought there might be something wrong with the flour itself but when the problem re-occured, I decided to go and check for myself and dismantled the Pro 6. Upon opening up the mechanism, close to a full cup of gear steel dust came out... the machine had been noisy but I had never thought it was grinding itself up !!! We had purchased the machine 14 months ago (2 months over warranty)... the service center folks were at first saying that I shouldn't have dismantled the machine and that the warranty was therefore void... however, after discussions, they agreed to take it back (as of course dismantling it did not result in the gears instantly grinding themselves up... that had been a problem that had started probably from the start) and they will fully replace the machine... I am hoping that the old one was a 'lemon' and that the new one will meet our expectations... However, from my experience, if you will be making an extensive use of a mixer, do your research to make sure it can handle the load.

"You Can't Hurt This Mighty Mixer"
I have owned one of these original KitchenAid mixers for over ten years, and I used my mother's for years and years before that. I have to say that I have never had a more powerful, reliable, and versatile mixer in my life. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's worth it.

I have used this mixer for everything from whipping stiff peaks in a cold bowl full of egg whites to insanely thick monster cookies, and the mixer was able to handle it all. I have personally seen lesser mixers puff out smoke and die with my sister-in-law's monster cookie recipe, and this mixer takes it in stride with hardly a wheeze. The dough hook kneads bread perfectly and consistently every time and the mixing attachment makes silky cakes with ease.

It is important to note that some time in the last ten years KitchenAid changed the bowl design just enough so that older paddles and whisks like mine don't work with the newer bowls. If you have a bunch of attachments lying around from an older version of this mixer, don't expect them to work with the new model. Other than that, this mixer is a baker's dream.

"I love my Kitchen Aid"
I recieved my Kitchen Aid about 3 years ago for christmas, I had been wanting one for years.

I make alot of double batch cookies and breads with no problems at all, the 6-Quart Professional stand mixer lives up to its name, the quality construction and all metal body does make it quite heavy but thats ok by me, I have a spot for it and thats where it stays, just like my oven and refrigerator its a part of my Kithen.

I highly recommend this machine to all of us who love to cook and bake.

I just cant understand having anything negative to say about the Kitchen Aid, unless its not being used properly, the directions give you step by step instructions on its proper use, I also think that maybe some people arnt getting the bowl on properly and thats whats causing the loud bumping noises.

"Lost without it!"
This stand mixer is wonderful! I have a husband and 5 boys and I cook all the time. The large, heavy duty size is great for us. It's powerful and versatile and makes everything from cookie dough, bread dough and whipped cream easily! I whip up batches of play dough for the kids in no time. This mixer still works perfectly after about 6 years of constant use!

What our customer's say!

"Love except for one detail...", My mom and my stepmom both have had a KitchenAid mixer now for years and I have LOVED using it. My mom goes through spurts of being a super-crazy bread baker.(Eventually, she purchased a Hobart floor mixer.) She decided to buy me the Professional as a Christmas gift a few years ago. She had burned out her Artisan motor and had to buy a new one. She opted for the more powerful Professional for me to avoid that problem. I do love how it is so much more stable on the highest speeds, no jittering or bouncing arm. The bowl is easier to secure and snap into place than trying to twist into a base once you've spilled batter all over it.

I have one negative complaint: my attachments leave a gap between them and the bottom of the bowl. I would imagine this is to save wear and tear on the bowl, but it has caused problems with some of my mixing. One thing I love using a stand mixer for is meringue as it definitely saves my arm from a hand mixer. However, with this gap, the whisk doesn't even make contact with my egg whites...and my recipe is usually using 4-6. I have to START the whipping with a hand mixer until it fluffs up enough for the stand mixer whisk to reach it, thus dirtying two appliances and taking extra time. Most of the time when making cookies, I have to do several stirs with a spoon by hand as there will be bits of flour in the bottom of the bowl that didn't quite get incorporated.

If you enjoy cooking, but don't really make super-heavy doughs like bread and do more meringues, I would recommend the Artisan. I never had this problem with it.

"The best Christmas gift ever!", I was watching an info-mercial on one of the local home shopping channels, about this machine. I only asked my husband for ONE thing, this professional mixer. I don't think I have ever recieved a more welcomed gift! It now is used on a daily basis. I mix cookies, mashed potatoes, and even my meatloaf with ease! I think the best thing I make now is home made bread! My family now enjoys this tasty treat daily! I remember my mother making bread and how time consuming it was. If you own this machine, do not hesitate to use it.

"There were good times...and bad...", I have to agree with a previous reviewer. I originally received the Professional 6 two years ago as a gift, after I dropped a few hints regarding this model, because I love to bake. This mixer did a very good job at a number of tasks, from mixing cake batters, to whipping eggs whites or cream. During the past 6 months I've taken to crafting artisanal-style bread at home. Years ago I used to make bread entirely by hand, so I was looking forward to having a machine help with some of the kneading, and I expected this mixer should be up to the task. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

In my experience, this mixer does fine with small quantities of bread dough. Providing a recipe has less than approximately 3 cups of flour, the mixer seems to tolerate it fine. However, a number of the bread recipes I use require at least 7 or 8 cups of flour. Many of the doughs are initially quite stiff, and the mixer clearly strains and struggles. Even after just a couple of minutes on speed-2 (the highest mixing speed recommended for dough) the motor casing becomes very hot, and on a couple of occasions the poor thing has sat there eminating whisps of smoke from the housing. This happened again today halfway through mixing a batch of sourdough. As a result, I am now mixing about half of my bread recipes by hand...just like the good ol' days. Good exercise, but at the expense of turning my mixer into a useless counter-ornament, at least where bread dough is concerned.

If you're primarily a cookie or cake baker, and you don't bake bread, or expect this mixer to work with dense, stiff doughs, I'd certainly recommend it. However, if you are a bread baker, I absolutely do NOT recommend this machine. I haven't completely crippled this machine yet, but that's only because I'm avoiding using it for recipes that I now know it can't cope with. The Professional 6 was, to my knowledge, the best mixer Kitchenaid offered at the time I got it. I've owned various Kitchenaid appliances in the past, and can only say I'm rather disappointed in this product. I've noticed recently they now have a "Professional 600". Thus far, the only notable difference between the two models seems to be that the Pro-6 has a 525 Watt motor, whereas the newer Pro-600 motor is 50 watts higher (575 Watts). This seems to me to be a rather paltry difference, and I doubt there is a significant difference in performance where bread doughs are concerned.

Like the prior reviewer, I will not purchase a Kitchenaid again, unless there is a significant improvement in the quality and performance of this product. Ideally, I would love a Hobart, but realistically I would more likely opt for one of the 7-Quart Viking models that have substantially larger motors than the Kitchenaids. Viking is more expensive than Kitchenaid, but I'd rather have a reliable heavy-duty mixer I can count on for ALL of my baking needs.

"Read The Manual To Avoid Most Of The Problems", After using an Artisan model that finally died after more than twenty years of service, we only considered KitchenAid for our next mixer and "stepped up" to the Professional series. The initial problems we encountered when first using the new mixer were all because I failed to fully read the instructions. The customer service person on the toll free number was very kind, despite the fact that the answers to the questions I asked were in the manual. The gear issues mentioned by others have not created any problems after a year of use. Here's to hoping we get another twenty years out of a KitchenAid.

"Gear Problems", I've read a lot of kitchenaid mixer reviews complaining about the gears being made of plastic and getting messed up pretty easily. I've noticed recently that all of the tags on these in the store make a very visable point that the gears are steel. Has anyone had any gear problems with the all steel model?

Read this reviews before You buy...

"ALL BAKERS SHOULD OWN THIS PRODUCT", THIS MIXER MAKES MIXING UP LARGE AMOUNTS OF BATTER A BREEZE.

"One Fantastic Machine", This is my second KitchenAid mixer. The old mixer is still going strong and will be passed on to another baker in the family.

The new KitchenAid Pro 6 is one fantastic machine with improvements in several areas. In addition to more power and a larger bowl, there is a change in shape of the dough hook which does a super job kneading bread dough. The new design of the pour shield is an improvement in that it contains dry ingredients even better than the old one.

Love all the new colors available. The majestic yellow is a sunny addition to my kitchen.

"review of kitchaid mixer", It makes breads and baking so easy. Whip cream and maraingue (sp)is a sinch. The one thing that is hard, is that you have to have plenty of room on your counter but I would gladly loose a couple of inches on my counter for this machine.

"a great mixer", I love my KitchenAid Pro. It has plenty of power for the things I do (bread dough, cookie dough). Now I have started to buy the attachments. Most recently I purchased the meat grinder. Having really fresh ground beef makes a difference in your burgers and meat loaf. The extra powerful motor easily handles the grinding, kneading, and other tasks. If you intend to buy some of the many attachments available, I think you will want the extra power.

"A helping hand in the kitchen...", My sister and her husband have owned a KitchenAid stand mixer--325 watts--for over 20 years, and they love it. I finally bought one for myself a year and a half ago, after three months of thinking, looking, and researching. I bought the 525 watt Professional 6-Quart model...and I love it! I have mixed huge batches of meat loaf, cookie dough, and cake batter with no problems whatsoever. (I use my bread machine to make bread, but I know my KitchenAid will handle any bread dough I might mix in it. In fact, my sister has mixed/kneaded bread dough in her 325 watt model with no problems...)

The plastic bowl shield is very effective and easy to use. It has a large open spout for adding ingredients, and I use it all the time. No more wiping bits of dough and batter off the walls and counter! The mixer's "slow start" feature also helps keep dry ingredients from flying out of the bowl. The "noise" my mixer's motor makes is what I would consider normal--even quiet--for a such a powerful machine. In fact, I don't even notice nor think about the noise while I'm using it.

I tried keeping my mixer on the kitchen counter, in a spot where I could use it without having to move it--it's quite heavy--but eventually moved it to my laundry/pantry room. It is large and takes up a lot of counter space, so I decided I would rather carry it into the kitchen when I need it. I don't use it every day, and it sits on a cart where I can easily reach it. Heavy, yes, but not too heavy--good for my arms!

Besides the powerful mixing capabilities, this mixer is literally like having an extra set of hands in the kitchen! While the butter and sugar are creaming, I am measuring out the flour and other dry ingredients. While the dough or batter is being blended, I am preheating the oven, greasing the pans, cleaning up the counter, putting supplies away, etc.! And, my husband loves this mixer because he no longer has to come in from the yard or garage to help me mix that huge, stiff batch of gingerbread cookie dough!

If power and convenience aren't enough, try beauty. My mixer's color is Majestic Yellow, and it is gorgeous! I wanted a color that wasn't too bold but yet, interesting. I was very pleased to see how pretty the yellow looks with my wood cabinets and that it seems to blend well with everything in my kitchen.

In conclusion, I am delighted with my KitchenAid mixer and glad I spent the extra money to get the more powerful model. I am just a wife and mom who sometimes needs a helping hand in the kitchen!
