Others say...
"What you would expect" I think that all of the reviews here are probably correct. The knives are clearly modified knock-offs of the classic La Guiole knife style. They are serrated, the box is very awkward for knife removal, the bee does look like a fly. On the other hand, come on! Did anyone expect to get an authentic knife for this price? And if it's advertised as a steak knife, did you somehow expect that the French would give it their blessing ;-) I got these from my Gold Box, and I needed a set of steak knives. They look fine on the table, and they cut well. If you are a purist, save your money. You'll need it. Each authentic La Guiole will cost four or five times what you would pay for this set. Alternatively, a good balance would be to buy a genuine La Guiole carving knife and fork for display at the dining room table, and have these as complementary place settings.

What our customer's say! "Warning! Not real Laguiloe that you know and love!", I knew better than to order a set at this price, but hey... you never know. Now I do. I thought perhaps the first price was reflective of the sets quality--boy was I wrong. This set would never sell for 60 some dollars. Although the knives are useable (hence the 2 stars) they are NOT of good quality. The box is very flimsy and I wouldn't give this as a gift. If you want a knock-off go to TJMaxx or someplace and see these kind of knives for yourself before you buy. I'm going to save for some real Laguiole knives! "Decent set for the right price.", This set of knives is beautifull. They are sturdy and very well made. The price is well worth the product and I think it's a great value for the money. Let's face it most of the time you get what you pay for, These on the other hand defy that logic not by alot but defy it none the less. I would encourage anyone looking for a decent set of steak knives and arent willing to pay the big $$$, to pick these up. You won't be dissappointed. "Don't waste your money", These are cheap knock-offs, feather light and a sad misrepresentation of the fine Lagioule name. Buy anything else, because you won't like these ratty little cheapos. "Usable..........", A cheap imitation of the originals from France but they are useful. The wood handle and the shape is good looking. The originals are three times the price of these. I would buy another set or different types in this line because if you loose or brake one it is no big deal......... ""laguiole" steak knives", The finish was atrocious; the handles were finished very irregularly, and the steel of the blades was badly scuffed. The little wooden rays were a joke. The worst part was that I ordered them for a gift, ... I still had to scramble to find a gift. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Excellent quality for the price", These knives are of excellent quality for the price - or as the French would say, "un bon rapport qualité prix". I particularly like the finely serrated blades and the beautiful rosewood handles. I love them for any dishes that require something more than an ordinary table knive. (I personally don't like steak, so I can't attest to their effectiveness as a "steak knife".) Be aware that these are not authentique "Laguiole" knives. As the Amazon review states, the design is inspired by the Laguiole knife; they are not make in Laguiole, but in Thiers, France. It should be noted that there is no single company that makes "Laguiole" knives. According to various web sites for the Aveyron department of France, there are several manufacturers in Laguiole that make the true Laguiole knives. They can easily be found on the web, but are quite expensive. The Sabatier knives are an excellent, everyday substitute and well worth the price. "Shame on Laguiole AND Sabatier!", These knives are so inferior to REAL Laguiole knives that I am amazed Laguiole will allow their name on them -- or Sabatier either. They are crudely made and flimsy. The wood is finished in an ugly and uneven manner. The bees -- so beautiful on REAL Laguiole knives -- resemble flies. The box (half a box: no top) is difficult to use. It's hard to get the horrible things out and disappointing when you do. I resent having to pay postage on such a poor product!! "Couldn't be happier", I have been coveting a set of laguiole steak knives for years. When in Paris recently, I priced a set at U.S. equivalent three hundred dollars! I think the handles were mother of pearl or something but whew! Too expensive. Even the wood handle ones that I have seen have been a fortune. I don't doubt that these beautiful knives are but a pale imitation of the real deal in terms of material and construction, but for the money, they are a heck of a handsome knife set. I just got them and will use them with pride on Saturday evening. The blade seems quite sharp and OK, some say a bit on the light side. But heaven help me if I serve my family or guests something so horribly tough that these babies can't slice through it! Good looking; good deal! "Beautiful on the Table", I have two sets of these knives, given as wedding gifts and couldn't be more pleased with them. As beautiful on the table as they are sharp and reliable. The wood is rich and warm, the blade has a wonderful line with the charming Bee at the height of the manche. My husband is French and he says they are " super magnifiques"! I agree!! "6 for ...", these knives are meant ot capitalize on the languiole name, a famous design of knife with pistol grips and a fold-in blade. .... the knives are ...imitations of the original thing. The blades are stamped stainless steel, and feature a serrated edge--heresy to a steak lover who cut meat, not tear it. the handles are small, and lightweight, there is almost no heft to it, and it feels like you are holding a ... plastic knife in your hands. it comes with a ... wooden tray. ![]() |
