Others say...

"Good kettle, finicky base design"
Boils water quickly, but because of where the electrical contact is on the base (not centered like others), it often doesn't make contact when the kettle is placed on top, and must be jiggled into place. If you don't get it right you come back 5 minutes later to find that it never started heating...

"Works like a charm -- when it works"
My husband bought me one of these two years ago for Christmas. I was ecstatic, because I love tea and was sick of boiling water in the microwave for it. This kettle worked great -- for about 10 months. Then one morning, with no warning, the kettle gushed water from the bottom when I filled it.

We returned the kettle to Bodum for a replacement, as it was still under warranty. The replacement kettle would not attach to the heating element. We sent it back and got a second replacement. It has worked well -- for about 10 months, when the automatic switch mechanism failed. We had to start watching the thing like a hawk to take it off the element when it reached a boil (we can't shut the switch off manually because it doesn't work). Now, this morning, it just didn't turn on at all.

The kettle is STILL under warranty, so we could return it for a new one, but we're giving up and trying a different brand.

"Worked great while it lasted..."
We've had this Bodum Ibis cordless water kettle for at least 2 years now, and have always been happy with it's performance until now.

Occasionally it wouldn't sit down on the base exactly, and recently it started shutting off before it was done boiling (though the switch didn't shut off, so I think it was a loose connection). But the worst was the other day when the plastic on the base where the prongs connect from the kettle just started to melt. I don't know how it happened, but it is now no longer usable due to the acrid stench of melting plastic when it is in use.

While this kettle worked, we loved it. I may look at other brands before replacing this one, but most likely I'll end up with another Bodum Ibis because it really did work great for those two years.

"Good performance but doesn't last"
This pot stopped working less than a year after I bought it. I wouldn't buy another one, even though it performed well during the time it worked.

"Great time and energy saver!!"
Every claim this product has made is true - water for tea boils in a jiffy, it would take several minutes to heat the same amount of water on the stove! And I found out that you can make hard boiled eggs in this as well, the smoothest hard boiled eggs I ever had!

What our customer's say!

"great as always", great as always, i had two of them and they work good for 4/5 years. a "must buy"

"Great kettle", I bought this kettle on sale in Los Angeles in 1996. It has been used almost everyday ever since. I highly recommend this kettle.

"my favorite hot water pot", I bought one of these three years ago because when someone comes to the door or there's some other distraction I have, on occasion, boiled the water too long. Because this shuts off automatically when the steam is made, this is very safe and unwasteful. I bought the new one for my mother but she doesn't use filtered water so I suppose the coils and the filter will clog up sooner than mine, but it's attractive and a little something I can do to make her life simpler and safer.

"Good looks and speed, but has fatal design flaws", I like the looks of this kettle, it has a ball that shows the water level, and when it works it boils water relatively quickly. However, the base only accepts the kettle in a single orientation. This is a problem with the oval design of both kettle and base. If a circular power stub is in the middle of the circular base, then you don't have to get the angle of the incoming kettle just-so in order to get it on the base. Ok, so then you get it on the base and switch it on. Here you must watch carefully to see if the light goes on on the top, because it is about 50-50 whether or not you have really got the kettle properly on the base. If the light is not on then you have to jiggle the kettle until it comes on. True, we are not approaching the complexity of landing a plane, but frankly putting the kettle on should not be such a fiddly operation.

The spout has a filter, but this is good & bad. Good because you don't get bits of kettle fur in your tea (not that I've ever had this happen). Bad because you can't really fill the kettle via the spout. So you have to lift the lid every time and it's not super convenient to do that.

Final bit of this rant... er, review is that in less than 6 months of use, the kettle stopped working altogether. I am not impressed. I've used many electric kettles over the years and while this is perhaps the prettiest it is perhaps the most flawed.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Good and Portable", This kettle is a good item and very nice to transport, but the non-detachable base is kind of annoying. But this is very fast when compared to the larger version and way better than boiling over a stove.

"Bodum makes one hot kettle.", I bought the Bodum Electric Water Kettle in black after reading several favorable reviews on the Web. It replaced a old Procter-Silex kettle that was showing its years.

After a using it daily for about a month, I see why the reviewers recommend it. The kettle boils 1.5 quarts of water in just under seven minutes. I use the time to grind coffee manually and set up my Bodum French Press. Unlike most kettles, it thankfully does not have a whistle. It shuts off with an audible click. However, if you don't hear the click, you can turn it on again and get back up to a boil in seconds.

The design is simple and elegant. Its plastic construction is sturdy and lightweight. It imparts no off-flavors to the water. The kettle detaches from the base to facilitate cleaning and filling.

Electric water kettles range in price from $11-$250; this Bodum is a midrange unit. I think it is a winner.

"Easy to use, reliable for hot water", I got this to boil water at the office. It's reliable and simple! NOT for soup - just water. But switches off automatically when water boils. Attractive, too.

"A little trooper", I bought mine in the summer of 1997 and I just tossed it out last week. It cost me around 20 bucks new and saw daily service. It was still working when I tossed it, but the electrical connection was getting flaky and it wouldn't automatically shut off any more. It no longer could be left on the base when not in use, as it would remain on and boil dry; it became a fire hazard.

While it was in service I never had a bad thing to say about it - it boiled quickly, the plastic body got only warm to the touch - never too hot. And - I think this is important - it poured well. It was accurate, didn't spatter or overpour, didn't dribble. So, for 2 bucks/year I think it was a terrific value and I give it 5 stars.

I'm giving serious consideration to buying a replacement Bodum kettle, but since we're redoing the whole kitchen, I'll probably go with something stainless and more sculptural - and just hope that it performs as well as my trusty Bodum!

"I've used it for years. Great product.", I use the mini Ibus daily to heat water for my french press. It's fast, just the right size, and looks good. Great product.
