"Sputters way too much"
This unit looks great when clean, but start using it and it makes a really big mess upon itself and a 2 foot radius around the exhaust hole. My old "National" had a very light aluminum lid without a hole which used to lift up to let the steam out, but the Sanyo EC-505's lid is quite heavy and the little exhaust hole isnt good enough to control the steam. The result - a very messy kitchen.

"Bought a couple"
After reading reviews on Amazon, I purchased this rice cooker for my mom for Christmas. She loves it! I bought her a Salton cooker the year before and it bit the dust after a couple months of use. In comparison, she said the non-stick surface on this cooker was a dream to clean. Once I knew it was a winner, I bought this same cooker for a friend for a shower gift. So far, so good. Both people I've purchased them for have been happy. For the price, I don't think you can beat it.

"messy EC-505"
I find that this unit spatters and sputters terribly when I make quantities of rice measuring 3 cups dry or more. It is a 10 cup cooked unit and I can't imagine making any larger quantities than I have. I use the right amount of rice and water. Water spills over onto my countertop and through the air hole. As it nears being done the liquid spatters out the air hole all over my countertop. What a mess! I threw away the packing materials or I would probably return it. I do like the non-stick pot and the keep warm feature. If anyone has any advice on how to keep this mess from happening, I would appreciate it!

"Where is the on/off switch!!??"
This rice cooker surprised me with its quality in material and workmanship. I expected much less. Of course, the measuring cup and ladle are still made of very cheap disposable-like plastic, but everything else is respectable.

HOWEVER, I would NOT have purchased this item if I knew that it doesn't have an ON/OFF switch. The only way to turn it off is to unplug the electrical cord. What a pain! I tend to use a rice cooker often, and I like to have it plugged in all the time.

As for it's performance, it takes a long time to heat up. Expect over 30 minutes for the rice to cook. My old Hitachi was much quicker....and it also came with the ON/OFF switch.

"excellent product and easy to use"
This is a good option for families that don't make too much rice at a time or do not want other functions like steaming veggies.

I have been using this for several months and I cant believe how easy it is to use. The rice comes out excellent each time. You do need to adjust the water recommendations to make the rice suit your likeing. I find that I needed more water with every type of rice...especialy long grained basmati which was downright dry at the top when I used the amt. suggested.

I have a problem with small kitchen appliances because i dont have a lot of storage room. Adding another appliance is always a tough decision. I find that I have been using this enough to warrent the purchase (several times a week). I had a larger unit that had more functions but I found I didn't use the *added functions* enough to make up for the space it took.

This is a great and fairly inexpensive option for people who don't need a huge amount of rice at a time, arent looking for duel functions and have limited space. Its not tiny...but its a reasonable size.

What our customer's say!

"Great till it broke.", I bought this rice cooker about a 1 1/2 years ago, and the nonstick coating has been peeling ever since the warranty expired. I contacted Sanyo because I thought they made replacement bowls for the cooker, but they don't. Buy a more expensive rice cooker because they usually make replacement bowls, or go with the Panasonic SR-G10G which has an aluminum pot.

When it was actually safe to use, the rice cooker actually performed very well. The design is very well thought out. Detachable cord, big side handles, and a nice lid with a handle that stayed cool.

"Lid broke for no good reason", I had high hopes for this simple, small rice cooker. Unfortunately, disaster struck on the first time out. I cooked 2 cups of brown rice without washing it first (my preference). The rice cooked perfectly. There was a little spitting but nothing like the other reviewers describe. I scooped out about a cup to eat and, because the instructions say not to leave the unit on "warm" with a small amount of rice, I turned it off and let the remaining rice sit while I ate. After about 15 minutes or so I heard a loud "bang" in the kitchen and found that the lid had broken into a million pieces. I don't see any other complaints like this, so it was probably some kind of defect, but that's what happened!

"Great Multi-purpose product", I love this rice cooker/steamer. The non-stick surface makes clean-up a breeze. It is compact and efficient.

"Mess, Mess, Mess", I don't understand how anyone cooks with this. It blows out an immense amount of gooey steam water! I cooked brown rice, followed directions exactly, even soaking for an hour first. It was only 2/3's of the capacity, but it blew junk out the sides of the lid and out of the little blowhole and left a large puddle of gooey rice water around and under itself. A MAJOR mess.
I haven't even tasted the rice. So what if it's good? You can't cook with an appliance like this unless you put it in a giant sink or outdoors somewhere. What in the world is the deal? I don't even know if I can clean it up enough to return it....

"Great and it also cooks oatmeal", Perfect rice everytime but I've never cooked more than 2 cups dry rice at a time. I'm always present so I don't need it to shut off: 'warm' is fine. But what I really like is that it does a great job cooking hot cereal (steel cut oats, 7 grain- etc). Cereals always tend to bubble over and while the cooker lid gets a bit messy it never boils over. It is easy to clean too. I'm thinking of getting another one for our cabin. (hint: when cooking cereal...good to give a stir just after it gets cooking so the stuff doesn't congeal near bottom of pan).
