Others say...
"Can be fixed " I got this as a gift for my b-day. I too had the same problems when you start it up it sounded like an aircraft but if you take off the three little screws on the side and place a drop of superglue on the shaft where the fan blade attaches to your in business. Simple fix, stupid of the company for all those units sent back for this problem. Makes a hell of a great ice cream. "No go." Based upon Amazon's good price, I thought I'd give this unit a try. Unfortunately, both the original unit and a replacement unit had the similar cooling noise problem as a couple of the other reviews had made note. Amazon was great about paying return shipping fees. I'm going to give the Lello / Simac machine a try next based upon its positive reviews. "Dead on Arrival - Euro Pro Ice Cream Maker" Like two other reviewers, my unit had the loud buzzing of one of the fans presumably in charge of the cooling process. I was (rightly) concerned when I placed the order after reading the negative reviews, but I thought I'd give it a chance, with Amazon's great customer service backing me. "I Scream" I got the machine, and laid it on its side overnight. Next day tried to run a batch of ice cream. Followed instructions, but the first sign of trouble was when the compressor suddenly got very loud (basically sound and noise level of a *loud* central air conditioner -- as heard from right next to it). The machine ran it's full 65 minute cycle, and no dice. I tried to run it through another cycle (after waiting a couple of minutes to turn the compressor back on as per instructions). Unfortunately, it forces you to wait 15 minutes to start the mixer. And even more unfoturnate, it still didn't cool my ice cream enough to freeze it (possibly partially related to the low fat recipe). I think the compressor must be of low quality. "This is junk!" I waited nearly four months for this item and, finally, when it arrived the cooling system and motor did not work. I returned it and Amazon replaced it. The second one didn't work either. Not only that but it took three days to get through to the manufacturer and their customer support wasn't much help either. Have returned the second one to Amazon and gone back to my old reliable Krups (pre-chill the bucket in the freezer) ice cream maker. It always works. Don't waste your money or your time with this piece of junk!

Euro-Pro KP170E Electronic Ice Cream Maker
Why I buy this one ? - Electronic precision control makes perfect ice cream every time - Removable 1-quart ice cream canister -- make at any time no need to pre-freeze canister - Built in freezer technology makes ice cream faster than gel-type machines - Makes homemade ice cream, gelato, sherbert, sobet, frozen yogurt, and beverages - 1-quart ice cream canister What our customer's say! "Once it works, it's very good", All the other reviews seem on target, I'll just add my experience. First, I bought mine on eBay as a refurbished item. If you buy the unit new through Amazon, you probably won't have any of the missing parts issues I will describe here. When it arrived, the aluminum ice cream bucket was missing. I emailed the seller and he sent me one. Having gotten sidetracked, the unit sat for a few months before I messed with it again. I went to put it together, and there was a piece missing--a connector that slides into the mixer paddle on one end, and into the motor drive assembly on the other end. I was frustrated with the hassle and debated whether to contact the seller again (I was pretty sure the part did not come with the unit, but there was this shadow of a doubt that maybe it had been there and I had lost it) or to fabricate the missing part myself. The unit sat for another few months, and I didn't think I would have any luck getting the missing part from the seller, so I fabricated it myself. A 6mm x 30 mm hex head bolt, a few 6mm nuts screwed onto it and held on with 5 minuted epoxy created the basis for the missing part. Since the motor housing end was oval rather than hex head, I used my bench grinder to grind down the part to fit into that opening. I had also noticed a worrisome rattle in the motor housing, so I took it apart, and found a small piece of loose plastic in there. While I was in there, I noticed that one of the three wires had come loose from its electrical terminal. I reconnected the wire and snugged up the fit with pliers. I put everything back together, followed the instructions, and to my astonishment, it all worked, including the motor and paddle, and made a delicious batch of ice cream! Now all this hassle is not my idea of fun, and points to quality control issues by the manufacturer. (The loose wire in particular; the other stuff may have happened elsewhere) In using the ice cream maker, I have to agree with those who say the paddle should automatically stop when it detects that it is "stuck" because the ice cream is too hard for it to churn. Because it doesn't, you have to babysit the ice cream mixing cycle and manually stop the mixing if needed. Otherwise you may wind up with a burned-out motor. If you make the same recipes over and over and find they don't freeze up too solid to turn, then you probably won't need to babysit the mixing cycle. Now that it works, I love it. I just wish I didn't have to be Mr. Fixit in the first place. If I had it to do over again, I would probably get a different unit, but now that I know the quirks, it works well. The refrigeration unit is especially strong and convenient, not having to mess with ice and salt and so forth. It's handy to make several batches in a row. I like making ice cream with my kids (teenagers) and then eating it when done. So, with this unit, if you are a handy fix-it type of person, you'll probably do fine. Otherwise you have to hope you luck out and get a perfectly working unit from the start. Oh yes, I did do the twelve-hours-on-its-side thing, and that was a pain in the rear, due to the awkward shape of the unit, but you only need to do it once, so no big deal once it's done. If you don't mind rolling the dice a little, and possibly returning a bad unit or two, once it works, this machine does make great ice cream and is very convenient during use, with the sole exception of sometimes needing to babysit part of the mix cycle. "just horrible", Euro pro, famous for making inferior products, and also sells under the name of Bravetti, which unsuspecting HSN buyers get their share of lousy products from, makes this ice cream maker. I received this as a birthday present a few months ago, and I'm glad that I didn't pay the money for this horrible machine. I knew that I was doomed when you had to put it on its' side for 12 hours before using it (what reputable company would make you do that with one of their products, would kitchen aid?). I did what the instructions said, just like in the manual, and tried to make my first batch of ice cream, and when the compressor unit turned on, it sounded like a loud jet engine taking off it is LOUD! Other writers suggest to take a few screws off and put glue where the fan is? No Way!!! When you purchase something it should be working when you get it!!!! It broke within 30 minutes of use! Calling Euro Pro is a disaster, their customer service is rude!!!!! I took this hunk of junk to the thrift store. I bought the self compressed ice cream unit from Lello, and it is wonderful. I took it right out of the box, turned it on and had my first batch of delicious ice cream in a 1/2 hour! Euro pro has made inferior products for years, numerous complaints from consumers, but retailers still sell their terrible products. Amazon should take heed, and especially Home Shopping Network (HSN) for selling these inferior and at times dangerous products under the Bravetti name. Amazon has wonderful customer service if they had to deal with Euro Pro like we did, I am sure that Amazon would no longer sell their products. "Garbage", I purchased a "Factory Reconditioned Euro Pro KP170E Electronic Ice Cream Maker". It was delivered broken. I notified the manufacture and arranged to have it replaced by one that did work. When the new unit arrived, it to was broken. I am still looking for a ice cream machine, just not a "EURO PRO" "Reason for storing on side", This is not about the machine but addresses the confusion of putting it on its side for a time. It is the same principle of having to move a refrigerator upright and not lying it down in the bed of a truck. There is liquid in the compressor coils and it has to work it's way back to where it is supposed to be before you turn it on. "LOUD!", Not only loud but the mixer broke after one batch, avoid this product, sending mine back today! Should have read the other reviews first, same problems. This whole item should be recalled! ![]() Read this reviews before You buy... "Manufacturing problem", There is a construction or design problem with this ice cream maker. The plastic cooling fan (that blows across the compressors radiator fins) is not properly attached to the fan motor. The fan slips forward during operation, until it is 'grinding' on the radiator fins, making a loud noise (probably what the other reviewer heard). This could also prevent proper cooling, reducing the ice cream maker's effectiveness. This is easily fixed (which I've done, think superglue) if you know your way around a tool box, but that's really not an acceptable solution. They use a couple of non-standard screws, which can be undone with a torx screw bit (even though there is a post in the middle of the screw). There are no warranty labels you have to rip either, so if you tried and failed, you could send it back. Once fixed, it makes great ice cream. ![]() |
