"It lasts for a little over a year"
I bought this vacuum in Feb. 2004. It worked like a charm for the first year. Then I started having problems with the belt constantly breaking, the filter light coming on and the vacuum stopped sucking up the lint.

For the first set of problems I learned that it is difficult to find parts for this vacuum, and once you find them, they are expensive. I took my vacuum to a repair shop and was told that the bagless vacuums usually stop working after a year (due to the fine dust getting into the machine) - but hey, I'm at a repair shop, so I wasn't expecting to be told the full truth, so I didn't really believe it.

Then, when the vacuum stopped working again (and the belt broke this time and with it came a new burning smell) I took it in to a different shop. I was told the same thing - but this time, he showed me all the bagless vacuums in the back waiting for repairs.

Tonight, after just getting my vacuum from the repair shop, I was vacuuming, the burning smell started again, and a bolt from the brush cylinder burned its way through the plastic and fell onto the floor.

I thought two things: 1) that probably wasn't a good repair guy and 2) I can't believe I paid over $200 for this. Renting one would have been cheaper. I am going to warn all my friends about this one.

Good Luck.

"It's ain't heavy, it's my vacuum"
I hate this vacuum. I've had it for a little over a year. It started out ripping my Persian rugs to shreds but now, in its (apparently) golden years, I can't pick up a clump of cat hair unless I feed it in by hand. It's heavy, it's unwieldy, and it's worthless. The motor runs fine. Hose only, it sucks. But it doesn't clean the floor. As for cat littler, its specialty seems to be making it ricochet in all directions. It is about to become a curb ornament.

"can't believe it"
I just didn't believe a vacuum cleaner could change the way my carpet looks! It's amazing all that came out of our carpet. We had a problem with fuzz after professional cleaning. Our old vacuum couldn't cope. This is well worth the money. I've never seen anything like it.

"This vaccum will sheer your expensive oriental carpets...."
Purchasers, I am very sorry to report the following: what appeared to be excellent dirt removal by this machine is actually the sheering of my expensive Oriental and Indian sculpted wool carpets--among the finest carpets in the world. The nylon bristles at high speed simply sheer the wool right off the carpet. While the machine has excellent suction and would be very good on common carpeting, regular pile carpeting and the like, I must wave you off from using this on expensive wool, handmade carpets, buy a natural bristle vacuum instead. I am not sure I would recommend this type of bristly for any carpet actually. What a shame. The machine is also incredibly bulky and heavy--I am tall and athletic and find handling this machine to be just "awful."

"Superb vacuum at bargain price"

This Eureka had great reviews, but I most liked it "clog resistant hose". The [...], which is a nice vacuum but clogs easily, especially with pet hair, or bit of paper. In no test did the 1000. vac outperform this Eureka. Eureka's suction is almost scare... it's so strong. It was a factory refurb with FULL WARANTEE. What our customer's say!

"Wish Eureka still made this vacuum", This Eureka vacuum the 4885BT unfortunately has been discontinued but from my desperate search I have learned you can buy it factory serviced at abcvacuumwarehouse.com with a full 1 yr warranty for $129.99 + shipping. I actually have 2 of these vacuums and I can say with all honesty that this vacuum still outperforms many if not all the newer ones on the market now! I have tried the latest Hoovers, Panasonics and even the Bissell Healthy Home vacuum...they were all returned. Dyson, I won't even go there because of their outrageous pricing and poor scores from Consumer Reports.
The Eureka 4885BT is a 12 amp vac with all the necessary attachments, it has incredible suction and regardless of what Dyson claims this bagless vacuum does not lose suction power as the dirt cup fills up! I have found the main filter one of the easiest to clean of any bagless and it is not necessary to clean the filter every time you have to empty the dirt cup. The filter is cloth and when it really gets dirty I just put it in the sink with some laundry detergent let it sit a few minutes, swish it around in the water then rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely. When you put the vacuum in the upright position the roll brush automatically shuts off, which is great when you're using the attachments and there is also a manual switch to shut the roll brush off for use on hard floors. The hose attachment reach is very sufficient the belt seems to last forever and the vacuum has a dirt sensor which I was a little dissapointed in but being a vacuum fanatic, I modified it a little and now I won't buy a vacuum without a dirt sensor! The only downside to this vacuum (if you consider it a downside) is it's weight which is around 25lbs but then again, I am 51 years old with a back problem and I have no problem using this vacuum. Oh, and did I mention this is a very quiet vacuum! Being the fanatic I am I recently contacted Eureka and suggested that they come up with a new version of this model with all the conveniences maybe in a lighter weight design. I think if they would do this, Eureka would steal the vacuum market.
Don't know what else to say but for $129.99 if you're thinking of spending more on a vacuum you need to rethink! It's the tops!!!

"Awful Vacuum", I help my dad clean his house and use his vacuum. This is the most annoying, horrible vacuum I have ever used. Nearly every vaccuming causes it to get clogged. I have to spend a very patient 15 minutes each time trying to figure out where the clog is coming from. I also couldn't believe how much dirt was in the carpet each time since there isn't much dirt outside. After reading the other reviews, I realized it's not dirt, but carpet fibers being shredded. The roller brush often jams and it smells like it's burning because the rubber stoppers at the ends are melting along with the hose.

"Worst Purchase Ever!!", I loved this vacuum at first. It picked up everything, and even though it was very heavy I was happy. After about 8 months it stopped working correctly. I noticed it wasn't picking up anything and would quit in the middle of vacuuming. The hose got clogged after every cleaning. I was spending more time cleaning this thing out than I was actually vacuuming. After a year I am no longer able to vacuum an entire room without it quitting or plugging up. This is the worst product I have ever purchased!!! I am wishing I had my $50 WalMart vacuum back!! I am going to buy a new vacuum this weekend so I can finally clean my house.

"Allthe other reviewers are right - good and bad", Hmmm. All the comments I have read - good and bad - are true. This vacuum has awesome sucking power - perhaps too much. I may have, in fact, been shredding my carpet these last few years:-) Still, it is also very cool to see the junk piling up in the collector. My only big complaint was that the flexible black hose that carry debris to the collecting area can get easily plugged up. This shuts down the circulation and may cause the motor to overheat and apparently happens when you get the collector get too full. It took a long time with screwdriver and coat hanger wire to clean out the hose (I've done it a few times - ugh!).
I also fear that I have gone way too long in changing the various filters because the unit now seems alot less powerful than last year. If I can get everything flowing again, though, I hope to keep this vacuum for many more years.

"Junk and poor customer service", Had Item six months never worked right, talked to Eureka service serval times, what a run around, I will not deal with eureka again because of poor customer service and poor product. Thanks Bob (sbksports)

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Heavy duty but heavy", The cleaning power of this vacuum is heavy duty. It will suck up your carpet if it's not secured to the floor. The brush works well to lift everything out of the carpet. I am particularly pleased with the small micron filter; when cleaning around pet areas, this filter picks up a lot of particles. The only issue we have with this vacuum is that it is heavy. An average male should have no problem lifting it but the average woman will probably struggle, especially up and down stairs. This is a great vaccum if you have a single story house.

"Ok - you just have to get this vacuum - it is the best!!!", I am not a person who loves housework - you too? If so, and your house looks like mine used to - with dust fuzzies roaming freely across the hardwoods and ceramic tile, multiple mounds of dog hair and fuzz here and there on the carpets, and a billion bits of stuff (thanks to my son) on our navy blue carpet - you know how awful it is to vacuum. Regardless of how often I vacuumed, the "stuff" would still be all over the carpets. I'm sorry, but there is just not enough time in the day to have to keep vacuuming the same spots over and over just to pick everything up.

In a random conversation a few months ago, a friend mentioned this fabulous vacuum she had just bought and said I absolutely had to try it. Skeptic that I am - I made her bring it over here to test on my house - a real person's house (definitely not Better Homes & Garden material).

Oh my gosh - you can not believe how that vacuum sucked everything up - effortlessly! And how gross to see all the hidden (and not so hidden) mysteries of my floors show up in the cylinder - ugh! I am happy to report, the disgust factor does go down with continued usage of the vacuum!

I do agree with prior reviews that mention setting the level at 3 - great suction is one thing, mondo suction that will eat anything in its path is just a bit much!

"Phenomenal sucking power!", This little beauty pickts up dust and filth from places your wouldn't imagine were even dirty! This is by far the best vacuum I have ever owned, and ever used. It feels like you are making progress with the vacuuming when you can actually see the dirt collected as you go. It looks good, is compact and easy to store away as the hoses all fit nicely around the machine. The cord is nice and long - no need for extension leads. Although the sucking power is great, it is so easy to push along too! I have a dog, but you wouldn't know it. The Eureka Whirlwind removes all traces of pet hair from the carpet like a dream.
If you want a vacuum that is strong, powerful, well manufactured, good on the eye, easy to use, compact and reliable - this is the vacuum for you!

"powerful vacuum", Very impressed with this vacuum. Just got it yesterday and went through the whole house picking up years of dust and cat hair which was missed by our old Eureka vacuum. The suction from this vacuum is great and emptying of the dust collection cup was very easy.

"Powerful, but not perfect", Pros:
Definitely, the most powerful vacuum I've ever used. The dirt sensor light is awesome and it cleans great.

Cons:
The manual says to adjust the brush height to the lowest (1). However, the brush is so powerful that it ruins your carpet. You get the illusion that it's filling up with dirt, but it's actually carpet fibers. In addition, my carpet now has carpet blades (i don't know what you call them) pulled up randomly. Put the setting at (3). Your carpet won't get damaged.

It requires a lot of force to move the lever that releases the dirt catchers.

Overall, the vacuum is great, but make sure you keep the setting at 3. I can just tell right now that my carpets were injured.
