Others say...
"DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!" I was forced to put a one star rating, in actuality, there shouldn't be any!!! For those of you new to these types of products, you might be very curious about using this cheap product. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! It simply doesn't work. I know I've done better by using a good toothpaste and your thumb (check out youtube). Its just my hands got tired and I wanted something a little more mechanical. This product does not work, just walk by it at the store and don't even look at it. I bought mine yesterday, its going back to Wally's today. "Just buy a new CD!" I've tried this on at least 20 CD/DVDs just to see if it actually repaired them. It doesn't. In fact, it added scratches to a perfectly good blank CD that I used as an experiment. If you have a damaged disc, buy another disc. Don't waste your money on this "repair kit." "Don't buy it. Seriously." After a long time of looking for a CD cleaner for my computer games, I bought this one because of the price- before looking at the Amazon reviews. Big mistake. I must agree with the many others who gave this product one star: it doesn't work, and it even made my discs a little worse. I started with a game CD that had minor scratches on the surface that prevented it from running in my new laptop's CD drive. I put it through the repair cycle once and followed it with a cleaning cycle, as per the instructions. When it was done, I tried it in my computer. No dice. I ran it through two more clean and repair cycles. The disc still didn't work. I did, however, notice some rubber track marks left on the top of the CD from where the device's wheels hit the disc. Also, on the bottom of the CD was a mysterious dirt spot that had definitely come from within the machine. I put another disc through the clean cycle, and this time found a bigger brown spot on the CD's bottom, which left scratches. Yay. Thanks, Memorex. I've gotten better cleaning results using just soap, water, and a soft buffing cloth. The instructions recommend that you replace the replace the cleaning pads after 20-25 uses and the repair pads after 15-20. If you use three cycles for each disc repair, you would only be able to clean five CDs before you need to order replacements! This thing would be a bad value even if it worked. Basically, the OptiFix Pro is nothing but a twenty-dollar disc damaging device. Avoid this one. I'm returning mine. "Memorex Optifix pro; tried it despite the reviews..." Okay. I read all the reviews on the Memorex Optifix Pro and thought that perhaps all of the people that experienced problems were doing something wrong. SO, when I stumbled upon it at my local Wal-Mart, i bought it for $18. I can seriously say that it is made pretty shabbily. The plastic body feels like an uber cheap cd player. I followed the directions precisely and tried to "repair" three cds. The only result this unit yields is a clean cd. NO scratches were "repaired". This unit is a good concept executed poorly. This unit 100% does NOT resurface cds. (i tried to resurface a cd with 3 medium scratches. after 6-7 "repair" cycles the only difference was the cd looks cleaner. all the scratches (although not too deep) were still there. I am taking it back to wal-mart because i have ordered the aleretec as some reviewers have reccomended. this product is cheap, but even at that price it is ineffective for repair. It is an excellent unit for cleaning. (although the "cleaning soloution" is merely alcohol mixed w/water.) the repair solvent has no grit to it, so i was tempted to put toothpaste on the repair wheel and see if that would actually resurface my disc, but i didn't want to destroy my cdon a whim and lose my ability to return this for not working as it claims. i would not reccomend this product for anyone. i am sure there are several products out there that actually do something to the disc layers. I did notice that other reviewers complained about swirl marks on the disc. i did get that slightly, but that is common with most resurfacers i have used. the aleratec supposedly doesn't do that, so we will see. "OPTIFIX" It's a good product for the most basic general cleaning. The pads have a limitted life span and the skip that I had on a DVD that I was trying to repair .... well it still skips.

What our customer's say! "Worthless garbage", Does nothing. leaves smudges to be removed with a cloth on cleaning. so it doesn't remove scratches and it does a half asked cleaning job. This thing makes a tee shirt and tooth paste look like break through technology. "Garbage", Normally I check reviews before buying any electronic. But we are going on the road tomorrow and I wanted to fix the kids DVDs before then. I go to Target and get this for $20. Absolute waste of money! The DVDs have gone from playing but pausing/freezing from scratches, to not playing at all. Since I foolishly trusted this product to be worthwhile, three DVDs are toast now, thanks Memorex! You can bet two things: A. I'm not buying any electronic without looking it up first. B. Memorex is going to get a steady stream of complaints. Don't waste your money, this thing is useless. "Not worth its weight in sand", I bought this product for $20. Tried to repair a couple of CD's with it, but this device created more circular scratches on the disc. Please dont ever buy this item. "Do not waste your money!", I only give this one star because there is nothing lower. This did nothing but put a dent in my wallet. Does not work AT ALL! "The good, the bad, and the inevitable", First, why have a personal DVD repair system? For me it was when we're watching a movie and it starts pausing and skipping, and I have a better alternative than to just give up trying to watch it after cleaning it with windex doesn't work. If the Optifix doesn't work, at least I had a better way to try to get the movie going again. I believe their is no such thing as a perfect DVD repair system. However, some DVDs are borderline dirty/scratched that a good cleaning and a turn through the "fixing" mode should bring SOME of those DVDs back from the brink. With that in mind, Optifix works, though not perfectly. I have three young children that can be rough on DVDs (especially the children DVDs). Using Optifix to first clean, then attempt a repair, and then clean again, I have about a 60% success rate of returning DVDs to playable status. That's the good news, and by itself should rate a four star review. The reason that its three stars is that the pads need replaced frequently. They get worn out fast, especially when unused for days or weeks, and can start to scratch the DVDs themselves if not replaced often. Twenty uses is about the maximum. So if I "save" 12 out of twenty disks, it probably saves me $120 - 240 in having to buy a new disk to replace the old one. Heck, even "saving" one or two disks per kit that you like well enough to rebuy is worth the $8.00 or so for that kit. My only response to the "it scratched my DVD even more" one-stars is this: First, the disk wasn't working already if you were trying to repair it. Second, replace the pads more often, especially if you haven't used the device in a while. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "be warned about lead", I was really excited to get this product. I unpacked everything and noticed a label on the cord. Imagine my surprise when it said: "This product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling." There was no warning on the box, and customer service did not seem to be concerned that their products contain lead!!! There must be something else out there that can be used. I have a three year old who puts his hands on everything, I am returning this immediately. "Junk. Avoid this. It does not work.", Unable to repair the simplest scratch for repair. Bad cleaning job. Repaired nothing. Avoid this. "Good and useful product", If you're tired of cleaning digital disks (cd and dvd) manually, this is the perfect option. In this package you get: 1.one pair of repairing and cleaning wheels. 2. a scratch-repair and cleaning solution. The secret: if you expect a complete deep scratch health system then don't waste your money. The motorized cleaner doesn't repair deep straches (in fact there is not a such machine for that problem). Also be prepared to buy new cleaning and repairing wheels, Memorex should develope washable-cleaning wheels (at least). "Lame", I got this as a gift. I already had a hand-cranked scratch remover that works great! Except you have to turn it forever, and I was happy to get a motorized one. I put a minorly scratched CD in the machine. It's noisy. And after a while of noise that annoyed everyone around me, I took the disc out....and it was exactly like how I put it in there. It didn't do anything. The repair wheels and the cleaning wheels seem to be made of the same fabric, which is barely abrasive. They're just different colors is all. For cleaning, it might do a different job, but why get a machine to do it when you can use a t-shirt like everyone else does? "Worthless", This thing does nothing. It does not repair well nor clean well. Complete rip off of a product. UPDATE: I've found that pressing down the the lid while it is operating improves the results. Of course it will probably end up wrecking the motor and/or the CD. I still wouldn't recommend buying this thing, but if you're already stuck with one... you can give this a try if you're feeling brave. ![]() |
