Others say...

"Way too Hot!"
Like others have said, this cooker is MUCH too hot. My model has a low setting, but even after an hour or two the food was boiling. Even after the appliance switches to "warm" the food continues to simmer rapidly. I've made several dishes in this thing, from stuffed chicken to beef stew, and only one recipe came out decent (corned beef). I plan to replace this one for a smaller unit. Even 2/3 full, which is A LOT of food - even for leftovers - everything burns and has an off flavor. The final straw came when I used the Duet insert to make oatmeal. I woke up to a sticky, brown, burnt, gooey blob. I've had it with this product.

"Great Crock Pot. "
This is the first crock pot that I ever owned - so I don't have much experience with them. I bought it on sale at Target for 39.00. The best feature is the timer - Putting food in before work and coming home to a cooked meal. Another great feature is the pot is easy to clean. The 5.5 quarts are more than enough space to cook in.

Cons:
I agree with some of the other reviews that state that the low setting is still pretty high. This hasn't been a problem for me though.

"Works great"
My old rival crockpot finally died after 13 years. I used a recipe I have made several times. Put it on low and left the house. My family came home to a great dinner. As the other reviewers say fill the crockpot at least half way up. AND READ THE DIRECTIONS!

"Hate it"
My reasons are similar to everyone elses. Even when 2/3 full this thing will boil your dinner. What good is thr programmable feature if all the settings are just too hot? Definitely do not leave home when this thing is on as it is like playing russian roulette as to when it will burn the food.

"USA Made Product a Must"
I bought this Rival Model at the local Goodwill and paid $15, it was practically new with the cardboard insert in the pot. I was looking for a manual for it and came accross these reviews. Firstly, this pot that I found is made in the USA. Many recent pots are made in China and are inferior. I made the mistake of buying a new oval crockpot and the ceramic insert cracked from the heat on my first use. And while they sent a replacement that was not a good sign. The lid on the Chinese made pots are lighter weight glass with a plastic handle screwed on the top. On the USA made pots, at least the older ones, the lids are made of heavy duty glass and are one piece. They don't jiggle, explode or let out the liquid. I was apprehensive because of so many bad reviews when trying out the pot, but I have cooked, a whole 6 pound chicken, with no liquid on a small trivet and a rack of ribs from their recipe book with excellent results...So I am thinking that the problem is with the Chinese manufactured pots. I am systematically going through EVERYTHING in my house and replacing all Chinese manufactured products with USA manufactured ones. And while this is getting harder and harder to do, and sometimes as with the crockpots, I have to resort to Goodwill, it is very worthwhile. When you compare one to the other, the quality of the USA produced product is far superior.

What our customer's say!

"Trying To Like It", This is the December 6, 2005 review I wrote for the SSC658 model:

I got my Crock Pot the day after Thanksgiving for $30 and it came with a bonus divided insert. I was so excited because I'd found out earlier in the week that Rival recalled the one I had been using.

I must confess that I didn't read the reviews before purchase. I needed a new one, there was a sale ... how could I go wrong? Well, you get what you pay for. I'll start with the bad first. As almost every other reviwer has stated, this thing runs hot. I have made seafood gumbo, braised chicken and green beans. Each time I come back home to find it practically boiling on the "keep warm" setting. Each item was cooked on low. I contacted Rival's customer service and they said there have been no compliants on this model! They suggested I exchange mine at the place of purchase. Rival would take care of any problems after 90 days. I was leafing through Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook last night and I saw that the author did not that oval pots cook faster due to more surface area than rounds.

This product does have two great features -- it's large size and the countdown timer. I purchased a separate Smart Pot unit to convert my old pot to a Smart Pot. I was disappoined in that you had no flexibility with the time four or six hours on high or eight or 10 hours on low. The countdown timer on this model allows you to set the time on any of the three temperatures in 30-minute increments.

To be fair, I have not made an actual Crock Pot recipe to test the product's cooking time against the recipe's time. I will try that this weekend and update my review. For $30, I think I can make this work. I wish my experiences were as great as they were with earlier models.

"Not all models are created equal, I guess", It is understandable that some of the reviewers are upset with their Rival Crock-Pots, and I wouldn't have a way of knowing if their claims are true or false. Unfortunately, this thread of reviews seems to lump together all sorts of different Rival models, with differing sizes and features. My review is for model number 5855C. I have used it and I have absolutely no problems with it. It has not "cracked"; it does not boil the food. To be honest, it does exactly what I would expect from a Crock-Pot: It cooks efficiently, with the added benefit of having a programmable digital timer. I did not pay upwards of 100 bucks for this, either. I found it, brand-new, in the box, at Tuesday Morning for $25. One thing to consider is that larger Crock-Pots are meant to be used when cooking larger meals. Makes sense, right?

"Handy Features", We have cooked with this twice now and it has proven itself worth of purchasing. The timer with the automatic feature is great because my wife and I both work and it doesn't overcook before we get home but automatically goes to warm when the preset cook time has run out. I actually ate BBQ out of it last night (Pretty Tasty). The oval shape is convenient for roasts as well. We have a limited time with the product but have been very pleased thus far.

"I got a good one", I received this from Rival as a replacement for a smartpot that had the handle fall off of the lid on the first use. I was skeptical but gave this one a try. So far it seems to be OK--I have cooked some of my favorites in it and they have not burned, although the cooker did test a little hot when I tested it. It is very attractive to look at. I also like the countdown timer better than the old smartpots. Thank you Rival for making it right; I got a better, more expensive model that seems to be working well. Not only did Rival make it right, but they did so in record time.

"I love my crockpot", I love this crockpot. I broke my old one and asked my family member for one for Christmas. I would of not went for the extra bells and whistles, but I am glad they did! I love how while I am at work it turns to keep warm after I program it. I also LOVE how you can prop up the lid, great for parties when you don't know what to do with that lid (when you are getting out your meatballs)! I also love the carrying case it came with, better than my last model's.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Ruined too many meals", It seemed to work fine for about a year. Then about 5 meals in a row were way overcooked. Particularly bad with beef meals. Turned a nice piece of steak into rubber. We were wondering for a while if it was the recipe, the steak or what. Finally I found that it simply runs too hot Even on the low setting the food boils in the pot.

We must have thrown out $75 worth of food before we caught on. Pay up for a better brand.

"Bad Purchase!", As many of the other reviewers have said, this crock pot is horrible. Low and keep warm functions might as well not be on this item because there is no setting other than High, near as i can tell. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

"This is a very good cooker", I've used this crockpot several times with absolutely no problems. I followed the directions that came with the item and read up on crockpots before using mine since I never owned one before. The lid functions as it was designed, to fit the pot, allow pressure to be relieved while letting moisure condense and drip back into the pot.
This is a large pot, if you cook small or even medium quantities you must adjust time. I've left this thing alone for over 8 hours and it never failed me.
I placed two cooking thermometers in the pot while cooking on low and high. The temperaturees were EXACTLY what they should have been throughout the entire time.

"another problem", I purchased this to cook while I was at work...what a crock pot is designed for. However the programable features has a major drawback...If the power is lost albeit briefly the unit will shut down and not come back on. You can come home to an undercooked meal.

"steve's crockpot", Great product. Cooks faster than average crockpot. Required reducing cooking time by about 1/3 so far. Keep warm feature is great.
