Others say...
"Nicely sliced" Lyndee Bee is right. I don't know what kind of slicer the one-star reviewer used before, but it must have been amazing to slam the Zyliss so badly. To Lyndee's positive review, I can only add a couple of things. I can't even imagine how much sideways or twisting force it would take to "derail" the guide. The guide is a long, heavy plastic piece with a "C" profile that engages the track slots top and bottom. I also like the fact that there are guide slots on both sides, so whether you're a lefty or righty you can put the guard on the side you want it. I have medium-sized hands, and I find the pusher piece perfectly comfortable - and if it were smaller, the one-star poster would be griping about having to cut everything up to get it to fit into the guard tube. As it is, you can comfortably get a decent sized potato in there. I also don't understand how you can get to the point that you're randomly jamming in the inserts into their storage box to the point that you're bending things. Friendly household tip - don't force things. Plus, there's no real need to have more than one insert out at a time anyway - they are clearly labeled in such a way that you only have to slide them out of the holder a half inch and you can see exactly which insert you've got. And it's perfectly simple to store this upright. Slide the insert box onto the guide rails so that the open end is facing the tall end of the slicer. Then slide the guard onto the rail from the top. Put the pusher piece into the food tube from the underside, lower the guard and slide it up against the inserts - the edge of the guard will slip between a couple of the inserts. At that point, you can store it sitting on the flat end of the insert box, or hang it by the tall legs from a pot rack, which is where mine is right now. I also don't understand where the blade risk is when properly stored. First, as Lyndee points out, storing a few inches of razor in dark places is probably not the best idea. But if you've stored it properly, you'll notice something. The thickest insert (mine says 7mm, roughly 1/4 inch) is longer than the other inserts. They made it that way for a reason. This is the insert you clip in to store the slicer, and it underhangs the blades quite safely. With the insert box covering the blade from the top, and the long insert covering the blade from the bottom, you'd have to be seriously talented and determined to touch the blade edge. This is a good unit - the only reason I gave it 4.49 stars is that it's a plastic unit, and there are metal ones for a comparable price. On the flip side - the plastic seem strong enough, and in two years of routine use, mine still works like new. "Almost returned it!" Based on the poor reviews I almost returned this unused! Glad I didn't. Once I downloaded the manuals and saw the complexity of the other brands and that everyone who owned a Swissmar Borner cut themselves... I decided to try this one myself. Some of the complaints are the safe guards against "the hard to use other brands" and the dangerous Borner. The Zyliss is very easy to use, very easy to clean and to store. Though I took the warnings from the instructions not to throw the parts with blades in the dishwasher as they may become dulled. Anyone who appreciates their cutlery never uses the dishwasher! I made the best oven baked potato chips the first night I had it. I do recommend it. It is less expensive than the Oxo and much easier and safer to use. "Good intentions" I'm surprised to see the all or nothing reviews; it makes me wonder if the production line produces some better than others! I received this as a birthday gift a couple of years ago and have been dissappointed from the first use. While I love that it has so many options and features, I hate that they don't work very well. The V-blade was sharp, but not in the right places? I was blown away by its lack of cutting through some of the sturdier vegetables like carrots and beets at times. I actually now spend the extra time in cutting my vegetables instead of using this product because of the hassle it causes. That was my cue to start looking for a better mandoline. "Second time's the charm!" I recently purchased the OXO-Good Grips Mandoline and was utterly dissapointed. I returned it, looking for the Boerner slicer instead, however, I couldn't find it anywhere. I settled for the Zyliss slicer and couldn't be happier. I tried to cut everything that the Good Grips slicer mutilated, and it works like a champ. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is that the thickness isn't always consistent, but it really isn't that big of a detraction. And the julienne blades are phenomenal. I am very very pleased with my purchase. Especially for the price. "great for the general user" I received this as a christmas gift from a friend who knows how much I dislike mundane slicing tasks. I like to dehydrate fruits in my dehydrator so I do a lot of slicing. This mandoline is great for home users that are okay with slight variation in thickness, if you cooking demands precise perfect slicting, look elsewhere, but for me to have a few milimeters of variation is just fine. It had made short work of tomatoes, carrots, apples, and bannanas so far for me, and the julienne blades work nicely for quick chopping onions. I also really like tha the blade insersts all store in a convient rack that attackes tot eh mandoline for easy storage and everything is top rack dishwasher safe.

What our customer's say! "Rubbish!", First of all, I feel like im going to slice my wrist open just looking at this thing. It will not cut uniform shapes of anything, let alone potatoes. My sole desire was to make sweet potato chips with this waste case and I cannot even slice through one end of a potato without using all of my strength to push it through. It is easy for vegetables like zucchini ----but its a zucchini!!!!!!!! The white base deck was stained orange after one use and will not come clean, food gets trapped under the blades...Save your money and chop the old fashioned way. "Absolute rubbish, waste of money", This item is complete junk. The blades became blunt after I used the carrot Julienne fitting only 6 or 7 times. Then the part that moves up and down started to jump off its rails every few swipes, effectively making the item completely unusable. Oh, and the plastic surface quickly stains, and it's impossible to re-sharpen the blades (and I have many different sharpening devices, including diamond and ceramic sharpening stones). I had it only a short while, but ended up throwing it all into the trash. I recommend you get yourself a really good kitchen knife instead, one made of VG-10 steel or similar. They are pricey, but last forever and are easily re-sharpened. "Love to use it frequently", I love to use this mandolin and so does the rest of my family. We use it to cut potatoes, eggplant, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumber, apples, lettuce, cheese, and more. It does a fast job with it all. Our blades are still sharp after 4 years of frequent use....I do not put any parts into the dishwasher...I recommend hand washing only. I don't use the cut guard, but it's easy to use if you feel more comfortable with it on. My husband and I couldn't live without this piece of kitchen equipment. It cuts our prep time for making vegetable fried rice, salads, and more down to a few minutes. It's very durable and still looks new after 4 years. "To store takes up a lot of space. Regulating thickness 1/4 to 1/2 inch is difficult", Zyliss Easy Slice Mandolin, White In general works well. Storage may be a problem in a small kitchen. No way to regulate thickness of slicec between 1/4 ang 1/2 inch. Cleans up easy, but watch your fingers, it's veery sharp' "Zyliss Easy Slice Mandolin", This is a sophisticated slicer for sure!! My DIL's dad runs an Italian restaurant and wouldn't be without this slicer. Since he thought it was tops, I thought our kitchen should have one too. I like it very much--it does a great job. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Couldn't live without it....", Another reviewer really panned this item. I disagree with most of her comments. ALL mandolines, like knives, scissors, etc., are inherently dangerous. It is up to the user to properly store them and use them. I keep mine in a large plastic bag and store it safely on a shelf. Using it, one, of course, must be careful -- after all it is made to cut stuff, and will hurt fingers, too, if you get them in the way. It is far safer than the $169 fancy French folding model it replaced. In the first place, the v-slicer design grabs much better than the straight edge slicers. (Note to reviewer #1, would you reach into a dark knife drawer to blindly grab for a knife, or would you store your knives properly? The mandoline is not something to store haphazardly.) I use mine primarily for slicing cabbage for cole slaw at which it excels. It is worth it for that alone to me. Cut the head of cabbage in halves or quaters, get your rythym going, and you can make wonderfully thin cabbage slices for cole slaw for a crowd in no time. I put the mandoline in a jelly roll pan to catch the slaw slices. The pan works well for capturing anything you slice. Much easier than doing it over waxed paper or plastic wrap. Easy clean up, too. I do find the julienne attachmenmts to be more dangerous than the slicing blades. I used one only one time and was happy I escaped without julienned fingers. I would not ever use those again. I also use it for slicing vegetables, i.e. summer squashes, and it works quite well. I guess I just consider it mostly my cole slaw preparer and find it marvelous for that use. All my friends and relatives seem to like cole slaw, and this mandoline certainly makes the cutting easy. So, this mandoline certainly has its pluses and has many uses. As with all mandolines, it is a kitchen tool you must use with great care. "REPLACED MY OLD MANDOLINE", ONE OF THE BEST TOOLS TO HAVE IN THE KITCHEN . BOUGHT MY FIRST ONE AT AN AUTO SHOW . THE ZYLISS HAS BETTER FEATURES , ESPECIALLY THE STORAGE FOR THE BLADES . I WOULDN'T WANT TO BE WITHOUT ONE OF THESE . "If you want to save your fingers, stay away from this thing", I received this mandolin as a gift to replace the cheap $9.99 no-name plastic German mandolin we'd been using for years but was falling apart. We appreciated all the available blades and thickness settings but this thing is a danger to use. The safety rail is not ergonomic at all. It will disengage as you pull the vegetable you're slicing up and down and becomes more of a distraction than a help. The plastic "insert" in the handle is just too large for even medium-hands to hold and steady the veggie. When you store it the blades in the accompanying pocket if you put the worng blade in the wrong slot you will bend the blade - making that balde unusable - it would be nice if at least the slots were labeled so you don't make this "mistake"! Also, they claim compact storage but the mandolin itself does not store upright, the handle and the plastic insert fall out and unless you come up with your own system it's difficult to keep all the pieces together. Not only that but the "blade storage" thing will store all the blades except one... which means that you need to keep one blade loaded in the mandolin. So when you're reaching into your deep, dark, cabinet to find all the pieces that won't stay put you're likely to stick your finger on or around the blade - my husband almost cut his finger off this way and we threw away this machine two weeks after we got it! If I could *only* find another cheap no-name German mandolin as our original - it all stored compactly (baldes, mandolin and handle) in a neat little holder that protected fingers from the blade, didn't damage the other blades when you stored them and also had a clip-on for the top so that it was all in one piece and safe to grab from deep, dark storage places. "Disappointing product", I had the opportunity to test this mandoline once without actually having to buy it, and I am thankful for that. (This is not even close to being on par with the Bron mandoline, but I guess that is what you get for spending a third of the price.) Anyway, I tried slicing cucumbers and carrots, as well as julienning the latter vegetable, and the pieces were far from uniform. The food holder was clumsy and difficult to use, especially with the orange that I tried to slice. None of the blade units contained particularly sharp blades, which you definately need in a mandoline. The only reason that I am even giving this object two stars instead of one is because of the safety rail, which did make me feel more comfortable about using a mandoline in the first place. "Buy Something Else", Buy a different mandoline. This one is awkward to use and very poorly designed. The higher quality stainless mandolines are a much better choice and worth the price difference. ![]() |
