"Dee-lish!" I did quite a bit of research before arriving at the Lello Gelato (formerly Gelato Jr.). This little workhorse stacks up to machines that sell for twice the price elsewhere! And Amazon had it cheaper (with Amazon Prime free shipping!) that anywhere else online. Regarding its performance, it does all it claims to do. The motor was improved in this 4070 model to include an auto-shutoff mechanism if the mixture freezes solid, so the motor doesn't burn out. The only technical issue is that the lid is attached to the motor, and you have to wipe off any splatters with a damp cloth after use. The lid remains clean, however, if you just remember not to overfill the freezing chamber, as the mixture will aerate and increase in volume during freezing. For you beginners: if the ice cream/yougurt/etc. doesn't come out well, it's not the machine's fault--you just need to keep tweaking the recipe until you get the right flavor and consistency! [...] has great, hard-to-find, safe-to-eat food additives to help you with this if you're interested in exploring the "molecular gastronomy" side of frozen treats! Happy experimenting! :D "Disappointing results" This unit worked well on the first batch, but would never freeze ice cream thereafter. A support person cautioned against using more than a pint of liquid; otherwise, he said, the unit wouldn't work as advertised. He suggested the pint of liquid would double in volume during freezing, thus honoring the manufacturer's pledge that the machine produces a quart of finished ice cream In my opinion, the Lello 4070 Gelato Junior belongs in the "buyer beware" category. "Great little machine" The machine was a little bigger than I expected, but it fits on the counter nicely and does an excellent job of making a smooth and creamy end product. It's relatively quiet and efficient. Watch it closely to avoid over mixing (makes for a grainy texture) the first time you try a new recipe. I didn't care for the recipes in the booklet. As a former professional, I reccomend finding a good recipe book by a reputable pastry chef, which will give you better tips for at-home success. My only complaint is that although the lid removes completely, you can't submerge it in water because there is a small fan attached to it. You can only wipe it down with a damp cloth. "icecream maker" first one didn't work. sent it back and in 7 days we were cranking out icecream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt. Don't waste time making drinks, use your blender. good buy. "Lots of problems" Unfortunately, I regret my purchase. There are smaller products on the market that are just as good and MUCH less expensive. When it was still working, it constantly beeped and was very annoying. Then the motor stopped working. I called customer service and they sent a new motor, but it was the wrong model. I have contacted them again, but they have not responded. Also, be aware that the time it takes to make ice cream with any type of firmness about triple what the product book says. Sorry I had to be so negative as I really wanted this to be an awesome machine.

What our customer's say! "happy", I am pleased with the Lello 4070 however I wish it scraped the ice cream off the sides a little closer. "LOVE my Lello!! I feel like a Gelato Maestra!", I bought the Lello Jr. at the beginning of this summer after returning from our 10th trip to Italy, and deciding that I wanted to try and make gelato. After doing lots of research I settled on the Lello Jr, and I haven't regretted it. I've mastered basic vanilla, Sicilian bittersweet chocolate, crema, fresh peach, and the most fabulous cantaloupe gelato -- so delicious that my boyfriend says it's as good as if not better than what we ate in Italy. I also made David Lebovitz's Candied Bacon Ice Cream last weekend -- AMAZING! All of them are so easy with my Lello. Once I finally figured out the proper recipes for each (some I made up, but I also swear by and highly recommend "The Perfect Scoop" by David Lebovitz to learn the basics as his recipes are beyond compare) the Lello made every easy and the results were beyond my expectations. As I became comfortable with making gelato, I used what I learned from "The Perfect Scoop" and those recipes to help create my own. The Lello is heavy, yes, so I keep it on my kitchen counter, and it's hard to pour add-ins at the end (I don't use the tiny opening; I just stop the machine, pull out the dasher/paddle, add the mix-ins, put the paddle and top back on and start it back up). It also takes longer to make a quart than 30 minutes -- usually closer to an hour for mine. Difficult to clean? No, not even when I overfill the canister and some of the gelato pushes up into the top of the paddle and lid. It all wipes clean very quickly with a damp cloth. Sometimes I wish I'd purchased the larger, Pro model that makes two quarts at a time, but since there are only two of us at home, and the gelato tastes best when it's fresh (either that day or the next), it's probably best I only have the Jr. I did buy an extra canister so I can make two flavors quickly (one canister can still be chilling in the fridge while the other is churning). LOVE the Lello Jr-- HIGHLY recomend it!! "Like it so much we bought a second one!", My family bought this machine for me for Mother's Day in '04 for our second home. We actually don't make traditional ice cream much (lots of folks of diets), but I have frozen just about everything else with great success, from fresh fruit (using their simple syrup recipe and a little fresh lemon or lime), to leftover mimosas, to gazpacho for an appetizer on a scorching day. My grown sons and their friends, the little cousins, everyone has made "special desserts." It even prompted the purchase of a pizelle iron, so that we could try making cones, too. Last year they bought me a second Gelato Jr -- for our apartment in the city! It fits on the countertop, it is noisy, but as others have said, less than the dishwasher and not much more than our old air conditioner, and it's just as popular. The machines are a little sensitive -- they work best exactly horizontally and you do need to be careful to place the top exactly or the blade mechanism won't make contact and turn. Some ingredients do take a little longer than suggested. I find the included recipes to be well written, clear, easy to follow and easy to personalize! Definitely worth the money -- comparable output to the much more expensive models. "Wow!! Reap the Benefits of the More Expensive Units at About 1/3 the Cost!! Great Machine To Own!! I Love It!!!", This unit is a true blessing!! I had this machine now for a little over 5 years, and let me tell you that it's a godsend!! I'm so thrilled to have this great unit!! Every conceivable frozen treat can be made with this machine! It STILL cranks out the most beautifully-made luscious ice cream as ever, like it did when I first got it!! The usual drudgery of struggling with those manual units where you have to hand-crank them until your arms feel like they're about to fall off of you are completely done away with, and so is the messy job involved with clipping ice blocks to small pieces to fit into the ice bucket that surrounds the canister, and storing rock salt which is needed to made the ice colder!! Gone also, are the tedious problems associated with making room to store those pre-freeze bowls in the freezer for about 8-9 hours that come with the small units that make you pre-freeze the bowl first before making ice cream! These units are ridiculously time-consuming, not to mention being a waste of time!! And if you want to make more than one batch, forget it! You'll have to pre-freeze the bowl again for another 8 - 9 hours to make more!! This unit is simplicity in and of itself! You just turn on the main (amber) switch located at the back of the machine. This starts the compressor and the internal condenser cooling fan. While the freezing chamber is getting cold, just pour your pre-made pre-chilled mixture into the removable bowl or bucket, which it looks like a little boy's sand bucket. Lower the bucket into the chamber, fit the churn motor head with the attached paddle, set the churning time, press the start button, and away you go!! You're on your way to making some of the best ice cream that you ever tasted!! This unit is amazing! It has built-in safety features which help prevent the churn motor from burning out, as well as audible sound(beeps) to alert you when the timer is about to time out, or when the ice cream has hardened and the churn motor has overheated and the safety thermostat is about to kick in. Great for making those luscious summertime treats that you and the kids enjoy! Let the kids get in on the action and fun, also. They'll just LOVE the fun and joy of making ice cream and watching the machine at work!! I bought 3 extra little buckets for those times when I make two or three batches. Eliminates having to wash and reuse the same one all the time! Just leave the main switch on until you are done with all of the batches. Even though this unit's main cabinet is plastic, it is very strong, sturdy and durable! It costs far less than the stainless steel bodies on the higher-priced units, but it does just as good a job making those luscious frozen treats for you and the kids to enjoy any time of the year!! I love it!! This machine, even though it is sold under different model numbers or company names, is made in Italy by Lello Appliances Corporation. It is principally the same machine reguardless of who's name is on it. I've even seen it with a stainless steel body as well!! But you won't go wrong. I've had it for 5 years, and I can tell you that making ice cream now has never been easier or better! It's a doll!! Far better than the electric ice-&-salt-using hissing squeaking monster it replaced!! ~Daquan13. "Great ice cream in 30 minutes!!!!", I've had big fun making great, fresh ice creams for my family and friends!! This is a great machine! You can make a great ice milk in a couple minutes, and the machine will freeze it in 30.... ready to serve while you eat dinner!! It is very impressive to guests!! ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "ice cream maker", So far, so good. It's great because I don't have to deal with ice and salt, or a part which needs to be kept in the freezer. "Works Great", This is a great machine. First off, it doesn't need to be loaded with ICE. So it's very easy to use. Just fill the bucket, insert and turn on machine. After about a hour your ice cream is ready to go. Cleanup IS easy. This thing totaly rocks! "Excellent product!", I put it in the laundry room so it wouldn't be too loud, then when I finally turned it on the first time, I realized it was quieter than a normal microwave. Wow. Incredible simple to use, almost elegantly simple. Power switch, timer, and start button. That's it. I opened up the box, read the instructions in about 2 minutes, washed the bowl and lid, then dumped in some ingredients and was eating frozen ice cream about 30 minutes later. Amazing. I made 4 different kinds of ice cream in the first 2.5 hours of owning the machine. Coffee ice cream (decaf coffee! Cool - you get to control the ingredients) was made by tossing a couple of tablespoons of instant decalf into hot cream, then adding some sugar and pouring it into the bowl. Again, 30 minutes later we had frozen coffee ice cream. I'm not disappointed at all. It makes over a pint, easily. If you're a family without kids, that's all the capacity you'll need unless you're making batches for a party. If you want it frozen hard (rather than the "a bit harder than soft-serve" texture that the machine makes in 30 minutes, you can throw it in the freezer for a bit. Quite heavy, but you're not really going to moving it around much, are you? I can't imagine what the bigger machine must weigh. I haven't owned this ice cream maker for long, but at this point I highly recommend it! "Great, thick and creamy without the usual hassle!", The only issue I had was ups can't read it arrived on its side. It worked extremely well so far I have made a mascarpone gelato and a sorbet. They came out perfect, the thickest ice cream I have ever gotten out of a maker. "Very nice", I just purchased this item and am very happy with it so far. I've only made 2 batches of ice cream so far, the Strawberry ice cream recipe was wonderful! I'm impressed so far and my wife was amazed (she thought we would have to put it in the freezer before eating). The two things to note (as said with other reviews), it's not small, not huge, but with it's own refrigeration system, it makes sense. The 2nd thing is the instruction booklet isn't the best, cleaning, maintaining and using is all in small type on one page and doesn't really stand out... No real complaints, looking forward to much more ice cream and gelato! ![]() |
