"Good Value"
Worked well, but hard to find a cup that would fit under the foam nozzle. Otherwise a good buy.

"Save yourself the trouble and don't buy this product!"
I have been buying this machine for years. I say "buying" because the milk frother has a lifespan of anywhere between 30 and 90 days, which, if you like drinking cappuccino, creates some limitations. Nothing I've done to carefully maintain and care for this machine seems to make any difference. Why do I keep buying it? Because it's the only model I can find that allows enough clearance under the spout to insert a giant cappuccino mug (enabling me to make just one large cup, which I then split with my partner). The most recent time the frother died, I took the trouble to try to make good on the product's warranty with DeLonghi. It was SO not worth it! Although the product was just 60 days old and still under warranty, it was a huge hassle--two months of phone calls, letters, etc.--until I finally received my replacement. That was about a month ago, and the frother on this new machine just quit this morning. Save your money and invest in a quality product. (I'm so sorry I didn't). The EC5 is a piece of junk!

"Best value for espresso"
After working at Starbucks and getting free espresso drinks for 4 years, I needed an espresso machine to support my habit. This one was the most affordable with the best reviews, and so we went with it. I am so impressed! First of all, don't follow the directions on steaming the milk, instead of moving the pitcher up and down just keep the tip of the steam wand right below the surface of the milk. It should just barely look like the surface is stirring. If you have too many bubbles pull the wand out slightly at an angle. That will make foam instead of bubbles. The quality of the espresso shot isn't the best, so if you drink straight espresso I wouldn't recommend this. But for lattes, cappuccinos, or flavored americanos, it's so worth it. The money we're saving is great. (Even for a pro barista like me it took a few tries to get it right to make two at a time, so don't get discouraged at first!)

"Good machine"
I researched several machines and decided to go with this one after our Krups machine finally had a meltdown. I wanted a machine that could just make one good strong cup of coffee for the morning commute. I've had it a few weeks now and so far so good. It's easy to use, just had to experiment a bit to get the amount of coffee and water right, but that's to be expected. The milk frother is a bit short, and it does not give a crema on top of the coffee, but I don't think any of the steam driven machines do. All in all it makes a nice cup of coffee and does what it should for the price.

"the worst kitchen item i have ever bought"
i hope to spare someone else the pain of buying this. i just watched a fountain of hot water shoot out all over my kitchen counter as i tried to steam a cup of milk. not being able to select between 'steam' and 'brew' modes is staggeringly stupid. i am going to deposit this in the garbage and buy a different machine. and to the person who said this is common in cheaper machines, i have NEVER owned or even saw a machine that has hot coffee shooting out the front while steam is pouring out the side. that's just stupid and dangerous.

What our customer's say!

"Returned it after five days", We've previously used Krups and Capresso espresso makers that are similarly priced to this one, but this is the worst of the lot.

If we fill up the reservoir with water, it starts draining from every orifice until it is an inch or two below the rim. We checked the instructions, but could find no indication that it was supposed to be doing this.

When we added the amount of water the instructions indicated, it only made about half the amount of espresso it should have, and if we added some extra water, it sometimes overflowed the carafe. We were completely frustrated with the inconsistency of the unit.

The only thing positive thing I can say is that the reservoir cap is very sturdy.

We have returned it and will go back to Capresso. That one never drained water or overflowed the carafe.

"Espresso Maker", This product was re-furbished and came in a bit dirty. It's easy to use and makes espresso quick but the steam wand is terrible. It does not make the milk hot and does not let out enough steam.

"Not as good as expected", I bought the machine mainly for cappuccino. But the pressure of steam is really pathetic and it goes away after 5-10 seconds. There was no seperate system for steam. I had to return it.

"Not what I expected", This is a nice looking Espresso Maker. The problem I found with it is the steamer is made of a flimsy plastic and I thought it was going to break every time I used it. It is not in the right place on the machine to be able to steam a cup of milk. I would not purchase this machine again.

"My First Espresso Machine", This is my first experience with an Espresso machine but this little gadget has been well worth the modest price I spent for it. Critics are right that the frothing arm is a little short...but investing in a small 20 oz. stainless steel frothing pitcher seems to do the trick. Add a stainless steel coffee tamper, some Espresso and Cappuccino cups and you are in business. I have impressed even some of my "coffee snob friends". I'd recommend this unit especially to novices like me...then you can decide if you really need a $1,000+ machine. For now I'm just tickled with my $44.95 DeLonghi unit.

"Makes great espresso, but you have to know what you're doing", I love this machine, it makes much better espresso than the Krupps or Mr. Coffeeman machines I have owned. You need to watch your ratio of water to coffee, and if you want to make a giant cup of steamed milk, I would run a cycle for just steam. Those are things that were second nature to me, from using other machines, but if you buy this and expect instant starbucks in a box, you might be dissapointed. You need to pay attention to what you're doing, if you want it to come out tasting right.

"Worked fine for a month", (I meant to give this 2 stars, but it won't let me change it) The espresso machine worked great for a month, and then the frother knob melted and snapped off. We could still make espressos, but we bought it to make lattes and cappuccinos. Now the machine is just sitting on top of the cabinets, not receiving any use. Rather unfortunate.

"Bad Coffee Maker", I was told a few months after giving this coffee maker for a gift, that it didn't work, and never had. I felt really bad that I had given such a bad product for a gift.

"Not for Italians", If you're an Italian and live outside of the country don't buy this item, you won't like the kind of coffee that you get. Cappuccino comes out ok but again the machine doesn't have steam so you can't make a real expresso, cappucino and so on.
