"Great fan"
Nice looking. Quiet. Looks built to last, but we'll see. I haven't experienced the start up issues others have. It move a lot of air too.

"this one's a keeper"
I orderd the floor model and this version from Hunter and have been very pleased. They are beautiful to look at, weighty, as solidly made as they can be and very quiet. The buttons are thick pieces of solid metal. There is no plastic anywhere on these. Their lowest speed is almost inaudible, yet they cool by moving air so efficiently. My friend had no difficulty putting them together for me. They were packaged carefully to avoid breakage. I have one upstairs and one down and my house is cooled wonderfully. Don't understand all the made in China bashing and complaints about degree of diffculty in assembling in all the other reviews. The quality is remarkable.

"Beautiful and Quiet!"
I couldn't be happier that I bought this fan. It is certainly beautiful, and I love that it isn't very loud. I am very happy with this purchase.

"not pleased"
The fan is beautiful. However, the first night I used the fan it broke. It simply stopped working on the first speed. It then never worked again on the first speed, and ran only intermittentantly on the second but continued to work on the third speed. I have since returned this fan. I bought another locally. It began a noise on the first night of use which sounded like a tree limb scratching against glass. I returned it and got a third fan which also has a noise, a different noise than the second fan. My feeling is that it is made poorly. You might be lucky enough to get one which works but I was not successful.

"Hunter 90021 Century oscillating fan"
Purchased this fan for parents in their 70's. They wanted an all metal fan that wouldn't fall over. The fan's brushed nickel finish is very pleasing and blends well in any room. The motor runs very quiet. The 3 setting airflow is great. It's very powerful, and we usually run it on low. Not a cheap plastic fan. You will be pleased with this purchase. We've been running it daily for about a month now.

What our customer's say!

"It blows -- in a good way", This fan is amazing. It is my favorite fan ever, in fact. It's heavy, it looks awesome, and it blows in a good way. A previous reviewer has commented on how, when on oscillating mode, it can "click" rather loudly -- and I noticed that mine does this sometimes as well -- but it is not annoying enough to return it for another one. Yet if it was that annoying, the point is that I *would* return it for another of the same fan, rather than look at a different brand or model.

It's made in the USA, and if anyone reading this is as sick as I am with certain overseas products that were only meant to last a year, maybe two, this fan will technically pay for itself in a year, maybe two -- and keep on producing.

"NOT Quiet!", Built to last? yes!
Looks good? The best presentable fan I've ever had.
Quiet? No.. NO... NO.. Not even when I'm 10 feet away and have it set to the lowest speed, it sounds like small cessana plane flying over at the distance.

Fan blade wasn't exactly designed with air dynamics in mind. It's rather primitive in design. just flat metal with straight forward single bend. Believe me, fan blades have evolved in last two decades to run quieter and be effective at high velocity. (I guess they are keeping their 117 years tradition without incorporating new changes.)

It looks damn good even when it's not running, I really wanted to keep it. but... pap! pap! pap! pap! pap! pap... that echos in my head. I had to look for something else. If I can't find Japanese made Sanyo, I'll probably get a bigger blade fan that runs at slower speed. It will be ugly but graceful sleep at night can't be trade off for anything else.

"GIVE A BREAK", LOOKS GREAT PLUG IT IN WOW WHAT A PEACE OF ____. DONT BUY IT !!
AFTER RUNNING IT 6 HOURS OSCILLATING FAN MADE STRANGE NOISE SO I
SHUT IT OFF WAITED A WHILE THEN TURNED IT ON NOTHING FAN DONT ROTATE HEAR BIZZ SOUND .

RIGHT NOW . I ORDERED A PLASTIC 16 INCH OSCILLATING FAN AT LEAST
I KNOW I WILL HAVE YEARS OF SERVICE OUT OF IT !! I REALLY HAVE
NOTHING NICE TO SAY OR WRITE ABOUT THIS FAN DONT BUY IT .......

"Heavy and Well Built", We use the fan to offset some pretty high electric rates here in TX. Our tower fan quit oscillating and have had Hunter ceiling fans with positive results. Bought from Amazon and was pleased with their service and the fan is just what we need to push a large amount of air throughout our medium sized Den. It is quiet enough and very solidly built. It reminds me of the old Emersons and GE fans of the 1940's. If you want Hunter quality and a fan that does the job try this one. Also, we run the fan on low most of the time both Day and Night. We are able to set our thermostat on 79 degrees and are very comfortable in the downstairs of a two-story home by using this fan, a ceiling fan, and a tower fan. The tower fan has a loud whine and the Hunter fan is much quieter--just the sound of pushing air. We'll replace the tower fan someday with another Hunter fan like this.

"This fan blows", a lot of air. It is so powerful that its lowest setting blows plenty of air. The drawback to this is that it's kind of noisy, which I expect is because it's all metal, as opposed to plastic, which most fans are made of. I don't mind the noise too much because it's a nice hum.

It is also gorgeous, which is the main reason I got it. I have it sitting proudly in my living room, and it's like another piece decoration. Sometimes I move it to the dining room when it gets too hot in there, and I miss it in the living room.

Besides the noise, which isn't a big deal, the only other drawback to this fan is the black cord. I think it would be much nicer with a clear cord, as there is no way for me to hide the cord, and there is no black anywhere in my living room.

If aesthetics is just as important to you as function, I recommend spending the extra money on this fan.

"Century Fan - Great!", Great, beautiful, durable fan. First saw this fan in black and slightly bigger at a bar in Texas. The bartender raved about them and I thought if they can withstand the daily use of a restaurant/bar, that it should be pretty durable. So far I'm happy. Looks super cool and retro. Gave it 4 stars only b/c sometimes it won't turn on when on the low speed but doesn't effect how the fan operates. You can still turn it on using the middle setting and then switch down to the low setting, so all three speeds still function. If it does break, would pretty much guarantee I'd have no problem sending it back to the manufacturer, but doubt that will be an issue!

"Hunter Century 12-Inch Fan - Very Attractive Fan, Still Expensive",
Hunter's 90021 Century 12-Inch Fan sports great looks and retro styling, though at a high price. While the quality control on these models isn't perfect, if you have any problems you can return or exchange it. You also have a very nice 5 year limited warrantee that comes with it. Bottom line, put it through the paces when you buy it! There are alternatives though, depending on what you are looking for.

Yep, it's made in China. That doesn't bother me at all. If it bothers you, look elsewhere.

What bothers me is that the silver version was listed at $70 and the black version at $80. Either price is too high, but they both sell for $60 which is also too high as far as I'm concerned. Why list the different colors of the same item at different prices? These fans sell at other retailers for $50 to $60, so the list prices here are hard to accept.

It's just a fan. I realize that some people pay top dollar for top of the line. This is just "above average" though. You'll want to step up to a Vornado Silver Swan Fan or one of those highly hyped Allaire fans from Restoration Hardware if you have even more money to burn on a desk fan.

After researching a number of fans, I saw this one at my friend's house and thought it was a decent compromise. My friend's fan ran smoothly with a lot of power and minimal noise (from the fan head, not the motor). Of course, I did read about others getting clunkers. If yours is noisy, or doesn't oscillate all the way or just stops working, that's the time to use your warrantee coverage! Hunter at least does honor their warrantee, which other companies don't always seem to do.

The main negative for me, other than price, is that I don't like the power adjustment lever being on the base. I would prefer it on the motor housing. Still, that's a minor thing and you might have a different preference.

For alternatives with similar metal bodies, look at the:

Vornado FA1-0003-13 Silver Swan Fan - For about $100 to $130 you get a fan that is made with more weight and *hopefully* durability and quality control. Seems a bit much for a fan though.

Soleus Air FT1-30-44 12-Inch Metal Table Fan - very comparable for about $30 to $40, but just not as attractive. There are other ones out there too. Might be worth the savings if you can't get the Hunter on sale.

Pros
+ Attractive retro styling and sleek metal body in silver and black
+ 12 inch size is just right for most uses
+ 5-year limited warranty from a company that actually honors warrantees (at least based on past experience)
+ Easy set up and operation
+ Heavy and sturdy base makes fan very sturdy
+ Standard 3-speed controls for variable air flow
+ Pretty quiet motor and aerodynamic blade design for maximum air flow

Cons
- Still expensive for a desk fan
- Silver version is such a matte finish it almost looks plastic; After a return I prefer the black one slightly, but they are both still attractive
- May require oiling over time since it's all metal
- Not crazy about the adjustment slider being placed on the base
- Higher end versions are out there for those looking for the "very best" at any price

Conclusion

Review your options. If like me you just don't want to spend $130 on a fan, this might be the one for you. If you like Soleus, you might want to check out their cheaper more affordable fan. Get this on sale and you can come close in price with the Hunter. Just make sure to test it extensively and exchange it till you get a good one.

Enjoy!

"Quiet, Attractive, Functional...if within 2 ft. from you", I was originally attracted by the antique metal fan design and appreciated how quiet it is when in operation (Hunter branding was also a plus). I purchased this fan approximately one year ago and have used it every night for that year in lowest setting, non-oscillating mode. I originally had it on a table about 2 feet from my head, where it worked very well! About 6 months ago, I moved it to a small table 5 feet from my bed where I have noticed a problem that seems to be getting worse with time. It does not push air through the middle part of the circular blades, only out the sides of the unit, making it somewhat useless to cool oneself at night, I have noticed this in all speed settings, in both oscillation modes. While it is still very quiet and I like the design, I don't think I can justify keeping it for much longer.

There are better functioning (and cheaper) metal fans out there, such as the Lakewood HV-9C fan, which I would recommend over this one.

"I love this fan...", After trying several other similar fans, I have settled on this one. It looks good, appears to be solidly built and it actually has a "low speed" that doesn't sound like a jet engine getting ready to take off. There is the noise of moving air, but it isn't unpleasant or overwhelming. And then, there is the look of brushed nickel that adds value to my kitchen.

I, like many others, use amazon to do pre-purchase research, and settled on this fan before actually plugging it in. It's a great choice.

I'm sold.

Oh, did I mention the five-year warranty? Not bad.

"I absolutely love my Hunter Century fan... LOVE IT.", This fan doesn't look very imposing (it's just a 12 inch fan) but don't let it's size fool you... it can kick out a lot of wind... more than the average box fan. It looks classic, and you won't feel obliged to hide it. This fan is high quality! Solid and relatively quiet, with good design, materials and craftsmanship. This is a fan you will keep!
