"Wonderful gadget for grating parmesan cheese"
This is the third one I have bought. I love mine so much, and the design where you can put the cap on the end, and store your cheese in it, in the fridge. It has worked fine and is holding up great. The other two I have purchased have been for gifts. I use it all the time.

"craptastic"
Craptastic waste of money. Grater is not connected to handle enough and slipps on hard cheese (parm). It's been thrown out and replaced with an all stainless model. I gave it one star, only because the system wouldn't let me go negative.

Live and learn.

"Great product!"
I have owned this for a long time. It is a terrific grater. I use it exclusively for Locatelli Parmasan cheese, and have never had any problems with it. I keep the cheese in the grater in the refridgerator. Everyone that comes over for dinner loves it too. In fact, my brother in law bought one, and my mother in law asked for one for her birthday!

"Good for the Price"
Bought this at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. For the price, it's fine. It grates hard cheeses, but I can see how some reviewers felt it may (or did) break. The whole product is made of plastic, so gripping it firmly enough to shred hard cheese can take its toll.

My complaint: the area where you grip is too short. I don't know if it's my hands, but gripping the thing requires some contortion on my part. I basically have to hold the bottom of the barrel as I try to squeeze the top down, all while using my other hand to rotate the handle. I have only tried it with a hunk of parmesan reggiano, and it takes a bit for the shredder to get with the program before the rotations are easy to do.

(By the way, I would say this shreds cheese, not grates it.)

Another issue would be the sealer - when you're pressing down while shredding, the sealer sometimes wouldn't line up. So I would have to stop, reposition the sealer to go inside, and then continue.

I believe the only thing really going for this product is the storage capability. I like that you can snap on the cap and stick some shredded cheese in the fridge for later.

Regardless of that fact, I would've bought the Zyliss model, but didn't see it, so Oxo will have to do for now. I can tell you though, that once you get the grater going, it's easier to use than a usual manual.

"Terrible"
I bought this for hard cheese grating and it is horrible. I would not recommend this grater for hard cheeses.

What our customer's say!

"Great while it lasts (not long!)", Works great while it lasts - I've owned 2, and none made it past 2 months. The plastic breaks if the cheese is a little hard - and since I mostly use it for parmesan cheese, and that can be hard at the crust, it's not a good thing...

"Very handy cheese grater", We think this grater is just perfect for our needs. I had been buying those Kraft 'parmesan' graters that you use and throw away, and I wanted to get better quality cheese and stop wasting so much plastic with the disposable graters. We just pop a chunk of real parmesan in this grater and keep it in the fridge. I love that you can leave the cap on while you are grating and then pour the cheese over your food - so you don't get cheese all over the counter. The one thing we did figure out is that if it starts clicking and nothing comes out, we are just squeezing too hard. Relax your grip and it works just fine. I have to admit that I've never cleaned this grater - we just leave it filled with cheese in the fridge so I don't worry about cleaning it. I don't remember how long we've had it, but I think it's more than six months and it is holding up just fine.

"Poor guarantee", The rotary grater works very well and easy to clean. The black knob on the handle broke off. I have also heard this happening to two other people. No replacement handle is avaiable. The whole grater must be sent in for a replacement. This is a hassle when it should not be a problem for them to simply send a new handle.

"High maintenance, poor performance on soft cheese", So far I've had a good experience with Oxo products, but this one is a big disappointment. It really can only be used to finely grate hard cheeses. Any softer cheese (such as cheddar), even if briefly frozen, will be just smeared over the drum, stuck everywhere and will come out in a long rope, as one of the reviewers observed.

But it's not the worst part. I absolutely hate the design with the handle screwed on top of the drum and has to be reattached for every cleaning. With other graters it is possible to see inside the drum while grating and to make a quick adjustment, if necessary. To detach the handle you have to put your finger inside the drum and press it against the sharp blade (!!!). The drum is very difficult to clean - the inside is narrow and any soft cheese gets stuck very badly. If you put it in a dishwasher, dirty water will collect in the crevice where handle is attached to the drum. It's too high maintenance for such a simple device.

"Just OK", I got a traditional grater very soon after buying this one. For the money, it's a pretty good value, but it grates messily, is hard to clean, and is very uncomfortable to use. Also comes apart if you're not careful while grating. My cheese always came out lumpy, and forget about grating veggies. Blades are very dull. Nice if you feel like you have to have a rotary grater and don't want to pay too much. But only use for very soft foods.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Convenient cheese grater", I own one of these already and purchased an additional one for my daughter at her request. The grater is generally sturdy enough but can be difficult to turn at times with hard paremsan. Caps conveniently for easy storage in the frig - no need to take apart and clean each time.

"Very nice grater", This is a very nice cheese grater. Not too large to handle. Makes the perfect size gratings of hard cheeses.

"Not Durable", I used this grater twice before the little black knob broke off when I was grating some pecorino romano cheese. It works well, but it is not of durable construction. It would probably work better with softer cheeses, but it certainly wasn't worth the money I paid for it!

"Excellent while it lasts.", It's compact and stores the cheese between uses. After using, you cap the end and stuff the whole thing back in the fridge. The problem is that it has a pretty short lifetime. The plastic gets old and cracks. But because otherwise the design is so superior, I'll keep buying them.

"Very good product", We use this all the time. We never realized how much Parmesan cheese can be used in our cooking and in our meals. We buy it in a large wheel at Costco and keep some sliced in the grater ready to go all the time. Great price for a very useful item. Everything by OXO is wonderful, and if their products break, they are very good about replacing them we have found.
