"Perfect for veggies"
I love this steamer for my veggies! It didn't do such a hot job with my rice, but I only tried that once, so it was probably something I could have adjusted (more water or something). I've used and loved it for broccoli, carrots, asparagus, cabbage, etc. I use it way more often than my expensive stovetop steaming pot!

"Surprised at how much I've ended up using this!"
I read the reviews and decided against getting this, despite how much some reviewers liked it. But last summer when I saw it in a silent auction and realized that I could get it for a $1 bid, I couldn't resist. Best dollar I ever spent...this rice cooker actually works, and very well at that. The rice it makes, parboiled, white or brown, has all turned out great. The only time I had any sort of mess was when I did the maximum amount of brown rice, and then it was no big deal to clean up. This makes it so easy to pick up a Chinese entrée at our grocery store, and come home to make the rice in the microwave -- we save money by making our own rice and it couldn't be easier to get it done using this cooker. The negative reviews here chased me away for a while; I'm so glad I had a price I couldn't resist so I could "discover" this product.

"Since I use this every day ...."
I am concerned about the presence of BPA in the container. BPA is used to make clear, hard plastics and this is a clear, hard plastic. Does anyone know?

I use the cooker to steam vegetables every day and it's invaluable. Yellow and orange vegetables do stain the basket insert very quickly and the stain isn't removable, at least not with any cleaner I'd want to use on a food container. My last Joyce Chen lasted three years of daily use before it developed a fine crack in the base and leaked water. I'll be happy if this one lasts the same time. I just need to resolve the nagging question of BPA.

"no bueno!!!"
tried this 2-3 times and maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the rice was a disaster. Went back to boil-in-bags.

"Disaster!"
I tried cooking brown rice - which takes a lot longer than white. It worked after a fashion, but never did the job in the suggested time, so I gave it an extra ten minutes. (Big mistake) It warped, the seal failed allowing moisture to leak, the rice caught on fire, part of the cooker melted, the house was filled with smoke, and I don't know if I will ever get rid of the stench. I wouldn't allow another one of those things in the house if Joyce Chen personally brought it to the door and begged me to take it. )-8

What our customer's say!

"Great rice steamer, especially the price", My neighborhood Chinese restaurant makes fabulous brown rice, so I asked her secret. Always steam, never boil was the answer.

So based on the reviews here - and my budget - I ordered the Joyce Chen microwave rice steamer (with Amazon free shipping!). So far, so good.

My brown rice, store brand, took 25 minutes and an extra 3/4 cup of water to really soften up. But was delicious. I was surprised though that the directions called for hot TAP water. Haven't we been told lately NOT to use that for cooking or drinking?

Can't wait to try steaming veggies! (BTW I have a 1250 Panasonic.)

"Love this product", I was looking for a rice cooker, but found much more. I love baking potatoes in it and steaming fresh vegatables.

"Best rice ever", This rice cooker is great, even when using other liquids besides water,(i.e.broth)quick and easy for small or large portions. Steams fresh veggies without stains and cleans up easily in the dishwasher.Good value!

"Spuds n' Garlic (And popping corn experience)", This is the first microwave steamer I've tried that works really, really well. As with all other microwave cooking, one has to adjust recipe timing to the wattage of the microwave, and water has to be measured carefully - a good kitchen scale, measuring cup, and calculator are essential microwave accessories. That being said, it does a dynamite job on steaming whole potatoes - and the other day on a whim I threw in a handful of unpeeled fresh garlic cloves with the potatoes. The garlic came out with the nutty mild flavor and soft texture of absolutely perfectly roasted garlic, without the usual fuss.

With regard to popcorn, this gizmo works well within limits, and probably only with carousel type ovens* - fill with kernels only flush with the edge of the bottom cone and stop cooking after 2 minutes** on high or when the popped kernels reach the lid - not a second longer! REMOVE the popped kernels from the steamer and from the oven - you can nuke the remaining 'orphans' an additional 2 minutes** to get a pretty good total yield - but the 'rerun' batch of kernels will be a bit smaller, chewier and more well-done than the first run. Do not try to nuke any remaining orphans a third time - they will scorch and burn.

* With the benefit of many, many tests, I've found it best to place the steamer off-center on the rotating carousel before popping corn - the eccentric position (and moving hot spots in the kernel pile?) seem to help 'stir' the kernels - as long as they keep moving (a lot!), the popped kernels scorch much less readily.

**This is for a 1200 watt Kenmore - your time may need to be adjusted.

"Good product", Useful gadget, especially for young cooks. Easy to use and clean, less messy than traditional stove-top pan.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Good steamer, not great with rice", I purchased this product because I wanted a better way of making rice that using a stove-top method but knew I didn't have the money yet for a decent rice cooker.

If you are looking for a rice cooker, save your money and buy a decent one. Cooking times vary widely between the type of rice you use and the wattage of your microwave. It took about 5 or 6 times to get good results but it using it is still an uneven affair.

But, if you are looking for a great microwave steamer, the product really is worthwhile. Again, a little trail and error is needed but I found it to be an excellent steamer for vegetables and a great way to make popcorn without oil.

"Not good for popcorn", I bought this specifically to pop popcorn and it does not work well for that. If I microwaved long enough to pop most of the kernels it burned the popcorn.
But it does a good job of steaming veggies. (Haven't tried cooking rice.)

"Works great for veggies!", I haven't tried this with rice, pasta or popcorn yet. I have used it several times for different vegetables. The first try I cooked them too long. So, I cut the steaming time in half -- perfect! The shorter time may have been needed because I am steaming only small quantities for one person. I am going to try putting herbs and/or spices into the water for additional flavors.

It's a snap to use. Clean up is quick and easy. Can be put on the top shelf of the dishwasher, but so far a quick rinse and let dry has been enough.

I highly recommend this for a one or two person household.

"Had a plastic part break but still makes great rice", This thing is great because it makes perfect rice. I think it's best for making 1 to 1 1/2 dry cup of rice. I've tried making more and I didn't like the rice as much. It does boil over but I find the 'mess' very easy to wipe up. No big deal. I must have dropped the lid and a part of the thing that locks the lid broke off. So now the lid doesn't stay sealed but it doesn't seem to make any difference with the rice cooking. I would recommend this product.

"Bad for rice. Good steamer.", I wonder if the way this rice steamer is made has changed recently. I bought mine after all the rave reviews. I cook rice several times a week. I was very pleased at first. Then more and more water leaked out during cooking. Later, a plastic part of the cover that locks it on, broke. I hoped it was a fluke and bought another one. The latest one is almost useless. So much water leaks out when cooking rice that I have taken to using very low microwave settings and cooking it much longer. Still the results are disappointing. This morning it took about 40 minutes rather than the 22 minutes I used at first, and still the results are poor. It worked well steaming vegetables.
