Others say...

"looks good but just doesn't 'cut' it"
I bought this can opener because I wanted one in black and a stand-up electric that take up less counter space and is for tall cans. We've had a few problems with misfires. The unit would not grip the can and we had to re-align it. It also needs a little more power. The magnet that is supposed to grip the lid is not strong enough. The unit gets two stars, one for the color and one for the shape.

"Junk after 1-2 years"
As others have stated the gears are plastic and will fail after 1 to 2 years, and no replacement parts to fix, so the can opener has to trashed.

"Two thumbs down."
Please read David Maces's review. I bought mine about two years ago and just today the plastic part mentioned by Mr. Mace failed. A sturdy, sleek can opener is now going to the trash permaturely because Hamilton Beach does not provide a replacement part.

"I concur with David Mace's review"
Once that plastic part breaks ... its over.
I can not find a replacement part for it.
Otherwise nice can opener.

"Great opener"
I've purchased a few electric openers over the past years and none were worth the bother until I got this Hamilton Beach Heavyweight with removable washing unit. My thumb has little strength so after years of not using an electric opener, I bought another electric opener thinking they had improved. After a couple of times of use, the thing most times refused to grip and cut the can. So I returned it. I read the reviews here and saw this unit in a store so I purchased it and, yes, it cuts first time every time. Love it. I wish I could have purchased it for my mother...

Update 7/29/2007

My original post above was done on 11/16/2005. I forgot exactly when I purchased the opener but I'd had it for some time before posting. I still rate it a 5-star and would give it 10 if possible. For those mechanically inept (like my husband), someone may have to show you how to position the round magnet dead center on top of the can, then align the cutting blade in the rim of the can so that the "positioning" blade lies on the top rim of the can. Sounds complicated but it takes all of one or two seconds at the most to do this (like flip, flip). Large cans may take a second longer to position. It opens any size can I give it. It has NEVER dropped a can until I physically remove the can. It opens cleanly and evenly so that I no longer have to worry about cutting a finger on the opened can or lid. I also like how the cord can be pushed all the way into the opener itself so no visible cord left dangling if not in use. Should this can opener malfunction today, Lord willing I'd immediately replace it with the same opener. Had it only lasted a year or two, I would have gladly replaced it with the same product. One of my better buys, and I'm picky with a champaignless budget. Incidentally, I could not find an opener with "Portfolio" at Target or the Walmart where I got it, but this looks exactly like it and is heavyweight.

Update 9/21/2008

Still going strong. A pleasure to use.

What our customer's say!

"A Good Can Opener", This has been serving us for over 2 years now. We love the strong magnet that holds the top of the can once it is opened. A little heavy which is OK so it does not move while you are opening a can. You would need to learn how to properly position the can for it to work for you, but that just for the first few times you use it. It is actually not a very complex machine at all. Be careful not to hold it by the chrome top or the heavy black body may fall off. We think the price we paid for it is pretty reasonable (less than 20$).

"Lasted about a year.", Not good. We had ours about a year and seldom used it. Today a tuna can slipped and didn't engage right and the opener made a buzzing sound. Since that the opener buzzes, can't open a can, and tears into the side of the can if you try to help it along.

"Good while it lasts", That little plastic gear is junk. It was a nice can opener until that
little plastic gear broke in half...Right as I was fixing Thanksgiving
Dinner....Good thing I had the old "hand" standby. It was good while it
lasted but that was just a bit over 2 years...Too bad.

"Died after 3 months!", I purchased this opener 12/6/06 and the motor quit 3/5/07. What really troubles me is that I probably only open five or six cans a week. Please don't waste your money.

"PIECE OF JUNK", Initially purchased this item due to the easy cleaning feature, however have been very disappointed with the performance since I purchased it only 3 months ago. Edges of the lids are extrememly jagged and scraps of metal & label often land in the food! And now after 3 months, the motor is worn out and the unit buzzes whenever I attempt to use it. The cutting tool won't even pierce the can without some forcefull manipulations. Bottom line, don't waste your money.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"can openers should be easy", i bought this can opener to replace a lessexpensive hamilton beach model that stopped working. i needed a black one so i took a chance on the same brand, better model. well, i was wrong. the can opener never works on the first try. i have to fiddle around with can placement to get it to work. it tears and bunches up the label under its cutting blade, it whirrs away, but cut nothing 90% of the. i feel lucky whenever i get a can opened and down right incredulous if it works on the first try. do not buy this product. if i hadn't optmistically thrown out the box, i would have returned it.

"Designed to FAIL", There is a tiny metal cam that drives a very brittle plastic gear on the front of the can opener that drives the removable can opener top. After a couple of years, this plastic gear will BREAK. Hamilton Beach does not carry replacement parts.

The whole thing is JUNK once that brittle bit of plastic breaks.

Too bad, the whole rest of the can opener is nice and in very servicable condition. I don't think it even opened 100 cans before it broke. If that gear had been brass, it probably would have lasted forever. Now it's landfill.

"Finally a GREAT Can Opener!", You would think that all can openers were alike but they are not. After buying several over the past few years in which none of them worked all that great, this Hamilton Beach Heavy Weight Can Opener is the one that does work great. I can not begin to say enough good things about this opener. It works as soon as you put in can in the opener. I wish i could give this 100 stars because it would be worth every one.

"truly the best", I bought this can opener based on Quentin Deverill's review. I was not disappointed. It works like a charm and has a nice heft. You don't have to worry about lining anything up - just throw a can on and it works!

"Best Can Opener Ever!", I had all but given up hope on electric can openers until I bought this one. You can tell when you pick it up that it's of good quality (not cheap, plastic junk). The removeable head is also very solid/heavy duty, and washes easily in the dishwasher. The black and chrome design looks very stylish on my kitchen counter, as well. I'm a believer again in electric can openers!
