Others say...
"What a WASTE of money!" Yesterday (Sat 8/16/08) I purchased the Oxo Mandoline at a local culinary supplies store. I paid $85.99 (gasp! Had no idea other stores sell it for $60). The helpful staff at the store assured me it was their best mandoline and that they had never had a complaint. I've been looking forward all day today to using it to slice julienne carrots for my daughter's lunch tomorrow. What a disappointment! The mandoline barely slices, and the food holder won't hold the vegetables in place. I got were 3-4 julienned pieces and then the carrots slide out of the food holder. If I press down harder, the holder's plastic feet just scratch the carrots until they basically are crushed. When juliennes wouldn't work, I also tried regular slices, unfortunately with the same result. In summary, I'm either using this way wrong (but I've followed the directions, and have used mandolines before), or this is a worthless piece of junk. (Yes, I did remove the blue plastic protective strip from the cutting blade before using it. Right on the box is a guarantee that "if you are disatisfied with this product for any reason, return it for repair or refund." The store where I bought it will not take it back as it has been used once. They said that since they are unable to return it themselves, they cannot accept returns of a used item. Thus I have written to Oxo to ask for their help. It's too early to know, but I certainly hope they will respond within the 2 days stated on their website. I have many Oxo products and have always been happy with them. "Does NOT cut it" I have a German V-slicer that works great, but only cuts in two positions. I wanted adjustable thickness. I got a Japanese slicer with an adjustable blade. It works great, but is a bit narrow. I wanted an adjustable blade wide enough to slice a good sized onion. I got the Oxo slicer. I have a number of Oxo products and have been pleased with all of them. It is pretty. It is sturdy. It stands on it's own legs. It does not cut. I don't know why I didn't return it. I got it in 2004 and have attempted to use it maybe 3 or 4 times. It is just too dull to cut anything. It is safer than my other slicers-I don't think it could cut my finger. It is fairly effective at making tomato puree and crumbling cheese. "Excellent Mandoline" Works great. It's all in the technique. If you are clumsy you might have trouble with this or hurt yourself. "not impressed" Like others have mentioned, the blades on this mandoline are very dull. There must be a quality control problem since others give it good reviews. In my case, it simply does not work well at all. This has nothing to do with reading the instructions or inexperience. My wife is a pastry chef. The simple fact is that ours came with a dull blade. It is useless! Big dissapointment. I though about sharpening the blade but I don't want to void the warranty. It is only one month old so I am returning it. "Doesn't work" I'm disappointed in this product. We removed the safety strip and followed the directions but it just mangled the veggies. It's not sharp and difficult to use. Definitely returning it.

What our customer's say! "Oxo should be ashamed ...", ...for putting out a product this bad under their name. I own five other Oxo tools and I like all of them. They are well designed to do their job and comfortable to use. I have yet to find a single task that this mandoline does well and few that it will do at all. I don't know if the blades are too dull or the slot too large, but it will not slice potatoes, so don't even think of taking on carrots or beets. This is the worst waste of money in my kitchen full of tools. The avocado slicer is more useful. "Flimsy", When I first saw this item, I would have never thought that the first thing that would happen is it would break. Don't get me wrong; it didn't break to the point that I couldn't use it (one of the lower plastic pivots busted, but it was still usable). Heck, I even sliced up a bunch of potatoes to make home made chips yesterday. Unfortunately, or maybe stupid of me, I didn't use the holder and wound up cutting my thumb on the VERY sharp blade. This slicer has a VERY sharp blade and continuously adjustable thickness setting until it gets to the shredder settings. I would have given it the highest rating were it not forr the fact that it broke the first time I used it. "Food crumbles instead of slicing", I purchased this product from Kitchen Kaboodle and was disappointed from first use. On a positive note, the blade adjustment is easy to use, push in and turn for different thickness cutting or to alternate between the thick and thin julienne. I also like the legs to give room beneath the device for product to fall. I tried to dice apples for a spice cake. The apples jammed and didn't slice all the way. A kindergartner with a butter knife might have done a neater job. The apples somtimes sliced, but the julienne blade didn't cut all the way through, so I had partially julienned, partially sliced apple hunks. Not attractive. Then, I tried to thinly slice apples. It mushed them until I made the slices thick enough that I could have easily cut them myself with a chef knife. The slices were uneven and the hand guard made it hard to position the apples to make consistent slices. Next, I tried onion slices...it crumbled the onion. I didn't know onions could crumble. I did get a few nice slices out of one onion, but they were interspersed with raggedy-edged slices. Finally, I tried a ripe tomato. No go. The blade didn't incise the skin, just bruised the fruit. I have friends who have had positive experiences with this slicer, but personally, I can't make it perform consistently enough to warrent the price. I am returning it and plan to try to the Swissmar V-Slicer instead. "I LOVE MY OXO GOOD GRIPS MANDOLINE SLICER", I have two other mandoline slicers that do not slice potatos super thin (for potato chips) but the Oxo Good Grips makes perfect, thin chips, I love it! "An ok slicer, poor french fry cutter", This mandoline straight blade is sharp and good for slicing. The food pusher barely pushes 2/3 of a potato through and the other 1/3 is wasted. The smaller cutters seemed sharp enough to work. The mandoline is not very good if you cannot easily push food through. I returned mine. It was not worth $69.99 ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Not pleased at all", I am not pleased with this slicer. I bought it to make french fries. Half the potato doesn't slice. It seems like the food holder doesn't let the whole potato go through the blades. I am sorry I spent so much money thinking that OXO was a good brand name - who would think that they would make a slicer that didn't work...I wonder who did the testing?? "Not sharp. Straight blade chops, not slice", I was so excited ot use this product as I make pickles a few times a year. This review is only for chopping cucumbers, so I don't know how well it works for other purposes. For cucumbers, it just plain sucks. The straight blade is not only too dull to cleanly cut cukes into chips (it tears the skin on the backside of the chip), it take a considerable amount of effort to just push it through the blade. It's also a bad design. The blade should be angled across the machine so it slices as well as chops. Returning it today to Crate and Barrel. "OXO Good Grips Mandoline Slicer", Don't go with this product. It has a much lacking design. I am returning mine and returns are a hassle. Even using their suggestion to cut firm tomatoes in a zigzag pattern, it won't cut tomatoes. My cheap plastic model does that very well. I am buying the V-Slicer by OXO. I have determined I need one that stands up rather than me holding it up and I have determined that the V-Slicer is the only mandoline that will cut the softer foods. So, we'll see how this goes. I would get the stainless Borner V-slicer, but it's 100 dollars...and I am trying to go less expensive. My plastic Borner is about worn out, but if you want a real cutter - and non-dulling blades, just buy 2 or 3 of those - if you don't need it to be self-standing. "Not Impressed", I had high hopes when I bought this mandoline. It was everything I wanted in a simple straight forward format. Used it for the first time last night to slice carrots. They did not slice easily at all...could have cut them almost quicker with a knife. So sadly it will be going back today. "Boy what a disappointment!! ", Boy what a disappointment!! Do not waste your money. I've had this OXO mandoline about 2 months after being recommended at Williams Sonoma. I agree with many of the negative reviews here. I have one BIG COMPLAINT. The holder grabs a lot of whatever you are cutting, leaving huge chunks of leftover potato, cucumber, carrot or whatever. You can end up wasting i5-20% of your vegetables. I intend to buy a Boerner V-slicer. The Amazon reviews are much better for it. ![]() |
