Others say...

"Decent coffee, inexcusable design"
I have used this product for about a year now, and I have no complaints about the quality of the brewed coffee. But because of all of its usability issues, I can't wait to get rid of this coffee maker.

If you buy this coffee maker, be sure you don't let the paper towels run out. You will need one to wipe the counter after you fill the reservoir. You'll need another to wipe the breakfast table after you pour each cup, and probably another to dry the bottom of your coffee mug, if you don't want coffee dripping onto your lap. Until you've learned your lesson, you may have to throw away a few English muffins or bowls of cereal, spoiled by the coffee dripping from the carafe. I have never figured out a way to pour anything from this carafe without its dripping everywhere.

There are other flaws, as well. The on-off switch is a spring-loaded rocker requiring BOTH hands to operate (one to push the switch, one to hold the coffee maker in place). The auto-shutoff is a reassuring feature once you've left the house, but the 30-minute countdown starts at the BEGINNING of the brew cycle, not the end, so there's not quite enough time for me to finish my first mug before the second mug is going cold. Indeed, coffee tastes awful if it has been on a heater for too long, but this is not quite enough time. About another 15-30 minutes would have been perfect.

Some reviewers have referred to this carafe as "thermal," which may be misleading. The carafe is made of steel, but it is NOT thermally insulated or double-walled. If the carafe is not sitting on a heating element, the coffee inside will cool quickly. Its only advantage over a glass carafe is that it's unbreakable. Its main disadvantage is that you can't see how much coffee is remaining. Also, in my experience the carafe stains and discolors quite easily; the "stainless" steel used in the carafe is probably not of very high quality. Admittedly, one can't expect to see much 18/10 (high-quality) stainless in a $30 product.

Alas, I'm still searching for the perfect small coffee maker....

"A great cup of coffee from a badly-designed machine"
When I first used this machine, I couldn't believe they let it out of the testing labs. Yes, it's very good looking, black and brushed chrome and all that, but what happened to all that fashionable blather about ergonomic design? The people at Cuisinart seem not to have gotten the word. Filling the water reservoir, for example, takes great skill. If you pull the water chamber lid far enough back to fill the chamber comfortably, you'll snap the lid off. So you have to pull the lid back, but not too far back, which makes filling the chamber extremely awkward.

My solution has been to get it over with, let 'er rip and just fill it, then wipe up the water I've spilled. And if you think pouring more slowly makes the slightest bit of difference, think again. Water dribbles all over the counter anyway, so pouring more slowly just takes longer and prolongs the discomfort.

It's the same story at the end of the process, when the coffee's ready to pour. You're guaranteed to spill hot coffee all over, whether you keep the pot lid on or take it off. Not only that; prepare to have your hand scalded by the steam rising out of the pot. I've finally mastered the specific contortion necessary to pour coffee without burning myself, but it took time. For a while, I wore oven mitts. No joke.

So why, you might ask, is this maddening small appliance still on my kitchen counter? Because it (1) makes a great cup of coffee, and (2) it actually keeps the coffee piping hot. If you've tried a lot of coffee makers, you already know that while some coffee makers may offer you the former, almost none offers you the latter. Except for this poorly designed Cuisinart.

Don't say you weren't warned.

"Don't Buy This Coffeemaker"
I have had this coffee maker for nine months. It makes good coffee but the carafe started leaking from under the rim when we poured the coffee and just kept getting worse. What a mess! I called Cuisinart Customer Service, and, after being kept on hold for about 20 minutes, was told that the carafe wasn't covered under the warranty. Needless to say, I'm very disgusted and don't recommend this coffee maker!

"Cuisinart DCC-450 4-Cup Coffeemaker"
The coffee ends up okay. My issue is that the carafe is poorly designed relative to pouring. You must pour really slowly and carefully so as not to have coffee drip all over from the carafe. I just want to pour the coffee and not think about it.

"Great coffeemaker!"
I've sure never experienced any of the negatives other reviewers have. I owned mine for about three years; never had a problem with it, until one day it just quit brewing. Three years of daily use, not bad... I have two others (bigger, for "company") in the closet; drug one of them out but I miss my little Cuisinart, so I'm replacing it. In fact, I'm getting TWO, because I figure they'll probably stop production by the time I need another. This is the only stainless steel thermal I've found that has the heating plate; the ones without it just don't seem to get the coffee quite hot enough. And the stainless steel? I think coffee just tastes better from it!

What our customer's say!

"Cuisinart 4 cup coffeemaker", I really love this coffeemaker.
Since I am the only coffee drinker
in our household, this is perfect.
It makes just the right amount for one large
mug or two cups and the coffee is good and hot.

"Don't Buy- Bad Carafe! ", My mom bought 3 of these for Christmas: one for me, my sister, and my grandma. The carafe on ALL THREE of them spills when you pour from it. It somehow leaks sneakily down the front as you pour. We've all had the problem, so it's unlikely a user error. I've checked to make sure the top is snapped on correctly, I've tried pouring at different speeds; nothing helps. My mom also thought they were insulated when she bought it, but it's not. I'm unhappy with the product and would not recommend it.

"BEWARE! Terrible return policy", The coffee maker broke after 5 months of minimal use. Cusianrt has the worst return policy I have ever dealt with. Shipping both ways is the cunsumers resonsibilty and a check for $10 is required for processing. For a product that cost me $29 that is absurd. I'll never buy another product from them.

"NO!", The Carafe is hard to get into place, and when coffee is done and you try to pull carafe out you end up yanking it and coffee, needless to say, goes everywhere. I returned mine-oh-and the carafe is not insulated.

"A nice small coffee maker", I was looking for a white small coffee maker that uses cone filters. I had to decide between DeLonghi and this Cuisinart, and picked this one as this was smaller.

I've read enough bad reviews about it, but I don't have any problems with spillage both pouring water into the machine or pouring coffee out of the carafe, pushing the on/off button, or metallic taste. I'm very satisfied with this product.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"I love it", I bought this unit as I am the only person drinking coffee in the house, and I only drink 1-2 cups a day. The coffee is excellent, and only 1 tsp of ground coffee is needed for a cup. Considering the coffee price, that is a real plus. I love the steel pot, I am sure it won't break!!!
ok, there is no programming possible, but it takes me 5 min to get my fresh morning coffee cup, so who cares?

"Cuisinart DCC-450 4-Cup Coffeemaker", The Cuisinart DCC-450 4-Cup Coffeemaker makes excellent coffee. The automatic shutoff is a nice feature, and the lid design holds the heat in well. It is difficult to put the carafe back on the hotplate due the length of the shut off valves stem. A larger valve with a shorter stem would help, but the valve seat would need improvement to minimize leaks. Would have preferred a glass carafe, but the brushed stainless doesn't spot badly.

"coffee drinker", I looked very hard to replace a 4-cup coffee pot which I had had for over 12 years. I like to drink good coffee and I typically drink the 4-cups in one sitting - good coffee never lasts long in any pot.

I was very reluctant to purchase this coffee maker after reading the reviews here, but decided that for the price I could either return it, donate it to charity or toss it if it was that bad.

Turns out I have not had any serious problems at all and would recommend this to any of my friends looking for a small coffee maker.

To the concerns mentioned by others: The coffee maker is small and lightweight, so yes, pushing the on-button is a tiny hassle, but not much of one. The coffee maker pieces fit tightly together, so yes, you do have to pay attention when brewing a pot but I have had no problems pouring water nor putting the basket in. I have not had a problem with the stainless steel taste, but coffee does not sit in the pot - I pour it when it is done - that is why I use a small coffee maker - a quick 6 minute cylce and I am drinking a fresh coffee.

I am not saying that what others have written is incorrect - it is their experience after all - it is that I just do not see the issues as stopping me from enjoying the coffee made in this coffee maker.

"Going in the trash", Ditto to most of the reviews I have read. I wanted a nice little 4-cup coffee maker, reviews seemed adequate and it looked attractive. I CAN NOT LIVE WITH IT ANYMORE!! You cannot pour water into the machine with the carafe. You have to use something else or it pours all over the counter. Same when you pour coffee. Must be done over the sink or there's coffee all over the counter. The pause and pour works 50% of the time, therefore more coffee on the counter. The worst though is the taste. I have tried every trick in the book to get rid of the metallic, horrid taste. What is the use in drinking coffee when it tastes so horrible. It is going in the trash today and something, anything will replace it.

"Love it!", I've used my new Cuisinart 4-cup for a few weeks now and I love it. It makes a great cup or two of coffee and is easy to clean. Unlike a few other reviewers, I like the lid - it stays on great, controls the pouring to a smooth stream (no gushing) and easily lifts off for cleaning. I have not had any leakage of water from the resevoir to the heating area - it's a tight unit and works great. I would like to get about 15 more minutes in before the auto turn-off feature kicks in on the weekend. I've owned Krups, Braun, Mr. Coffee, and a few no-name makes before and this one is the best so far. It's streamlined and takes up very little counter space - no more worries about chipping or breaking the carafe as it's stainliess steel. Highly recommended.
