Others say...
"Works pretty well" I also have the Sage Roomba that came with the recharge docking station, two virtual walls and the remote. I've never used the virutal walls... I find it easier to just block the Roomba using chairs, hampers, etc. The only time my Roomba has become stuck was on a floor rug on a vinyl floor. Now I just pick up the rug before letting the Roomba clean. I have a heavier area carpet over our wall-to-wall carpeting and it does fine with that. It doesn't do so well where the wall-to-wall carpeting meets the vinyl flooring or along the edges of the area rug. But I just zoom over those areas with my hand-held vacuum. Like the other reviewers I would recommend using a "real" vacuum every few weeks. But I have a short-haired dog (who sheds constantly) and a 2-year-old... so the Roomba is a life saver. I find the remote a bit hard to use... but I keep trying. Also, don't leave a balloon on the ground... the Roomba got all tangled up in the string yesterday. Oops. "Much better than an upright, no good for stairs" I got this little guy "Oscar" ("Oh I love trash!!!") in February. I have used it nearly every day since then and have figured out most of it's issues. It came with a remote, self-charging dock, virtual wall, and the other standard accessories. Overall, it is fantastic. It is great to watch TV and let something vacuum your house. Because I have pets and rugs, I rarely let it go when I leave, because it gets full often. If I run it religiously every day, I can leave it no problem. I find the remote utterly useless- it's fine to start it from across the room, but you can't really control it with the remote very accurately, nor do you need it. Just let it go and it'll get everything. Chances are if it doesn't, then there's something in the way. You do have to pick up first. Items that Roomba doesn't like include sales receipts, coins, ribbons, strings, fingernail clippers (got the whole thing stuck in the roller), nuts bolts screws etc, socks, paper, plastic bags. Once you do it a few times it's easy, and you can start the Roomba and clean as it goes. Problems I've had include recently it couldn't find the home base. This was due to the front wheel being full of crud. You have to pull it off and clean it every once in a while so it can spin better. Works fine now, but I also cleaned the sensors at the same time. The flipper brush broke, as did the rubber scooper brush. I called customer service and am getting free replacements, as they are covered under warranty for no charge. Don't forget to clean out the filter! I was cleaning the brushes religiously and forgot about the filter- eww. Works better now. I have three pets, all of whom watched the Roomba very carefully on the first run, and now completely ignore it, or even play with it. They let it bump into them with no problem. Chasing them out from under the couch with the remote doesn't work because #1 - they aren't afraid of it, and #2 - the remote doesn't respond fast enough, so that part of the purchase was a complete failure. I am considering upgrading to the pet brushes when I need new ones, but these work well enough that I'm not sure it's worth it. Battery life is still great, even though I use it all the time. When not in use I leave it on the charger. I've never replaced the virtual wall batteries, but use it maybe once a week. Normally I just shut the door or block the way with a tub or something. As for the stairs, I tried to stick it on a stair and do one at a time. It doesn't fit. So I leave a Dirt Devil on the stairs and vacuum one every time I go up or down when they're looking bad. Makes it less of a chore and doesn't require dragging around a real vacuum. I cannot recommend this product highly enough. It has to save me 5 hours a week in vacuuming (3 pets remember). Plus it's a hassle to get a vacuum out and drag it up and down the stairs. This is easy to carry and from downstairs it's loud enough that I can hear when it stops but it's not disruptive. I would recommend the upgrade to the faster charging battery, and probably the home base, but can't see what else is necessary. If mine ever dies, I'll get a new one the next day. "Worth every cent to join the 21st century of housekeeping!" This is the best value for money item i've purchased in years, possibly ever! Mine gets stuck on the base of my speaker stands, but nothing else - it even glides over speaker wire without getting tangled up. A wireless environment would be ideal, but not necessary! This device cleans my carpet & tiles better than my upright ever did. Emptying it is a breeze, but be prepared to clean the brushes (i'm not complaining, i got off vacuuming!); there's a very helpful comb/blade device included to remove hair from the brushes. "the romance is fading" I loved my roomba initially, and still think it does a fairly decent job. Customer service has been very sketchy ( not returning phone calls and more or less telling me that there's nothing they can do). Something important they don't tell you initially is that it doesn't work on dark carpets or tile. The stair sensors make it stop or get stuck on these surfaces. The remedy from the company was unhelpful. "Sage for Pets - Best thing since sliced bread." Well I must stay I love this thing. We've had the Sage Pet for about three weeks and with four Siberian huskies it's getting a work out. We run it once or twice a day, usually when we go to bed and again when we leave in the morning. It's always picking up more fur but as long as you give the carpet a good going over with a regular vacuum cleaner before letting it go for the first time it can keep up with the fur it seems. That is to say we have not had to vacuum with the upright since we got the Sage Pet. I imagine its a good idea to give carpet a good going over once in a while but so far we have not had to bother after three weeks. The easy clean brushes are just that, easy to get out and clean. The cleaning tool is pretty ingenious as well, a few swipes with that an the main brush is mostly cleared. It finds it's home base almost always, even when running on max, but the key to that is to put the homebase in a location that is fairly central to the area it is cleaning. It does need good regular PM cleaning, however: We live on a horse farm so there's plenty of dust and dirt coming in all the time, so we have a can of air to blow the bin and filter out after each cleaning. The only thing I've noticed that is negative is that fur and such gets into the area above the yellow brush holding area. It's easy enough to pull out with your fingers and blow out with the air but seems to be somewhat of a design flaw, however, since the main electronics are all encased and only a motor is exposed in that one area it has not caused any problems. When I've run it upstairs the dust/dirt does not seem to be such and issue as it is downstairs, mostly just fur. One thing I've noticed since using it is the fur all over is much lower. It is not unusually when you have as many huskies as we do that fur tends drift and end up ontop of things like the TV and other dust prone areas...since we've had the Sage the overall dust seems to have gone down as well. Have not had any real problems with it getting stuck. It's gotten stuck perhaps once or twice, hanging on a Persian rug that is across a carpet/floor tile boundary but that was the only real time I can think of...the other a collapsable footstool had falling over and pinned it down, not it's fault..ours for not cleaning things up in that area. It's quite adept at getting itself going when it runs into problems, shifting the wheels, turning and wriggling until it gets free. You do have to keep things picked up in the area you want it to clean, which is not really a bad thing as it keeps things tidy in general, but after a few times you get a pattern down and it only takes a minute or two to clean up things that would get in the way or get caught in the brushes etc. Final Thoughts: Awesome product, so much so that I plan to get a second unit to use upstairs and probably get a scooba to keep our kitchen floor clean as well. Pros: Does a good job of keeping the pet hair down, floors always have a clean just vacuumed look. Special brushes are easy to clean and get pet hair off of. Cons: Not many since we've had it such a short time, however I suspect the we will see general ware and tare on it since we use it so much, also suspect the battery will only last a year or so as rechargeables don't have a the best longevity regardless of what type they are. Also the habit of fur and such getting up above the brush housing. Well worth the 200 bucks, however.

iRobot Roomba 4105 Intelligent Floorvac Robotic Vacuum, Sage
Why I buy this one ? - Robotic floorvac with dirt detection and convenient infra-red cliff sensors - Auto adjusts to any floor surface; 2-hour continuous cleaning; easy-to-empty debris bin - Edge-cleaning sidebrush; stasis sensor; virtual wall for confining to designated area - Rechargeable APS battery, 3-hour charger, 2 virtual walls included - Measures approximately 13 by 4 inches; 1-year warranty What our customer's say! "Not duarble - will fail", A clever machine when it works. Mine began failing after a year and totally failed after two years. Spend less time trying to figure out what's wrong with it, buy a regular vacuum cleaner and just vacuum the floor a couple of times a week. Given the technology that goes into this product, iRobot should stand behind it with a 5-year warranty. "I loved my Roomba. Until it died. ", I think for a robot, the Roomba did a nice job of picking up. I have a dog, and it was great for keeping up with the hair and the dirt he tracks into the house. I never had unreasonable expectations for it to do an impectible job, but I have to say it did better than I thought it would. So why the low rating? My Roomba died. After just 18 months! For $200, that is just criminal! My old stand up vacuum was given to me by my mom and was almost as old as I am. It still worked when I replaced it with Roomba. I called irobot and they said it was out of warrantly (1 year) and it could not be fixed. I loved my Roomba, but I wouldn't buy another without a longer warranty. It's just not worth the money if it won't last a few years. "heaven", my new best friend. be sure to clean the brushes regularly and pick up any items it could snag on and you can't go wrong! "Very good!!", I just purchased this vacuum and it is great for picking up dog hair and dogs cookie crumbs. Thanks! "great for pet owners", I give this product 5 stars because it's great for pet hair. I have a Beagle who shed hair faster than a speeding bullet. I have 2 roombas and plan on a third. I use this every day to keep up with the pet hair and it does a good job. About once a month I give the machine a good cleaning. I have noticed that the pet hair can get wrapped around the fron wheel. This can jam the machine, but a simple removeal of the hair, and everything runs great. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Just not worth it", We've had ours for over a year. At first I thought it was going to be very useful, but it has turned out to be more of a frustration than a useful device. It does very poorly on carpeted areas, and the front wheel gets bogged down with pet hair very quickly on any type of surface. You can't clean the front wheel as it doesn't detach, so your only option is to use a pair of tweezers on it. I found myself spending more time on cleaning the Roomba than using it. We quickly stopped using it for cleaning rooms and just use it for cleaning under the bed, where our vacuum will not fit. Today, it has decided to stop working after a few seconds of use, so I'm guessing it is the battery, although it shows having a full charge. Good luck in trying to get their Tech support to assist either on the phone or via email. "Rosie the robot version 1 is awesome", I named my SAGE Rosie. It is customary to give a robot a name therefore I will refer my Roomba SAGE as Rosie. Welcome to the 21st Century. At first I thought this was an over-glorified carpet sweeper until I purchased the unit and was blown away (pun intended) with the results. We have tile floors, two very hairy dogs (Shepherds) which track in sand because we live close to the shore. Rosie doesn't mind the hair and sand, she works tirelessly and cleans all of my floors in one charge! The virtual walls work great as they stop Rosie from getting in to trouble. The room Rosie cleans needs to be prepped. Any carpets with freyed ends has to be picked up off the floor. Any small item and dog toy has to be removed. Any wire has to be picked up or blocked somehow. One day I forgot my that radio's power cable was exposed and Rosie pulled my radio off my night stand. She's agressive and a very powerful worker. Although IRobot says to clean her ever 3 jobs, she gets a cleaning after every job. The cleaning process is very straight forward and simple. IRobot did a great job designing the main knobby wheels in such a way that no hair gets inside of them. However, hair gets inside the axle in the front wheel which snaps off for easy cleaning. The brushes come off effortlessly and are easy to clean, I use a small cissor to cut the hair that gets trapped in between the brushes. The cleaning tool they give you works great but I noticed I need a small cissor and a paint brush in my Rosie Cleaning Box. I blow the dust off the filter and clean the vacuum chamber with a quick swipe of a paint brush. I take care of Rosie and she takes care of us. We sleep at night while she works on the livingroom and kitchen. In the morning, she's found all charged up on her charging cradle. It's awesome. If you have a ham radio receiver or like to listen to AM radio the charger throws out some RF noise, but that's easy to fix, just unplug it once Rosie's charged. By the way, be sure to pick up the dog's water bowl or she'll use it like a hockey puck. If they had 10 stars here I would give her a 10! We were seriously thinking of hiring a maid because of all the dog hair, but now all we need to do is dust every so often and the house is clean. IRobot designed this workhorse to be durable, reliable and effective. I'd rather be cleaning my Rosie every time than pulling out the vacuum and cleaning the floor. I'm definitely getting a SCUBA soon. Although Rosie does a great job on the floor even cleaning the paw stains, we do need to wash the floor every week or so. We're spoiled now. Thanks IRobot. Now make a dustbot and we're jammin' "my little helper", If you have pets and hate to vacuum, I highly recommend iRobot's Roomba Sage for Pets. The first time I set "Isaac" (hey, every robot should have a name) loose, I was amazed at all the pet hair and fuzz he picked up even though I'd vacuumed with my regular, much more powerful vacuum cleaner two days before. And when he was done, the floor was actually cleaner than if I'd vacuumed it myself. I attribute this to Isaac's twirling Borg-like bristles that sweep beneath chair legs, and to his overall persistence--he covers the same areas multiple times. Usage. Every other day or so when I get home from work, I place chairs or other barricades around cords or areas that I know from experience will trap or confuse Isaac. I also pick things up off the floor, close doors to rooms where I don't want him to go, and power on one of the two supplied DD-powered deflectors to keep him away from a ledge. This preparatory step may sound time consuming, but it becomes faster with practice. I can now prepare my 800-square-foot living space for vacuuming in less than a minute. When all is ready, I press Isaac's Power and Clean buttons, and he's off! He vacuums while I do other tasks or simply relax. This is multi-tasking the way it was meant to be. After a full hour or more of vacuuming, he returns automatically to his docking station, emits a "da da da Da, da Da," powers off, and begins to recharge. The first time I witnessed this I actually applauded. Impressive technology, useful, and fun! Roomba Sage for Pets Pros: -- Works on linoleum, hardwood, and low-pile carpet. -- Reduces pet allergy symptoms. -- Has a Clean mode for regular cleaning and a Spot mode for working on areas that require extra attention. -- Emits an "oh oh" when stuck, so you don't have to watch him all the time. -- Is relatively quiet. My pets were never terrified, not even at first use, and followed him around, curious. Now they mostly ignore him. Cons: -- Requires some watchfulness on your part until you learn what he can't handle. He has problems with wires, thick-pile carpets or carpets with tassels, precipices, and height differentials in which he can become wedged. -- Does not substitute for a regular, full-powered vacuum cleaner. Isaac is more like an automated brush and dustpan--perfect for use between regular vacuuming times (which, if you're like me, can be weeks). "great on pet hair, but not on the rest", I've now had my Roomba for over a year. Here's my bottom line: 1--it is great on pet hair. It does a better job than either of my two vaccuums, and almost as good a job as my shampooer. 2-- it gets stuck very easily. Sometimes it even gets stuck up on a wall that it's tried to climb. I've learned not to let it into odd shaped areas, niches or side areas where I know it won't figure out how to get out. Repositioning is not hard, of course, but it's a pain to walk in a room you were hoping to be clean only to find that it got stuck and needs to start over. 3--the battery doesn't last very long. It will be worn out before it finishes 1 room and will take at least 6 hours to re-charge. It really takes 2 full charges to get a living room or master bedroom area. 4--it doesn't pick up a lot of dust. It mostly picks up surface hair, lint, bits of gravel, etc. 5--you have to clean it every time. The manufacturer says to clean it after very 8-10 uses, but that's impossible. If you don't clean it every time, it will do a terrible job the next time. And if it gets too clogged, it gets stuck and can't move. I still use it frequently, but not as often as I used to. "This damn thing really works", I heard so many good things about this that I bought one to see what the fuss was all about. I bought it from the manfuacturer's website and got the Sage for Pets + free home base + free shipping for $180. Deals can be had on these, so shop around. With the manufacturer you get a 30 day home trial as well. I read online you have to tidy up the room and move things that may be obstacles like cords, small toys, etc. and I did. The instructions also say to tuck any rug fringe under. My unit is not scared of rug fringe and runs right over it, though your mileage may vary. Press one button and the sucker goes! I'd say cleaning power is right up there with a dust buster, so don't expect Windtunnel or Dyson performance, but the thing works as advertised. It may get stuck here and there, but it turns, turns, turns, and gets away. It did get stuck in one spot in my house and turned itself off. :) Now I will block that area. So far, I've done carpet, hard wood, and cement. It's about as loud as a Dust Buster so maybe it's something you want to run upstairs while you are downstairs or hit go before leaving work, but the noise doesn't bother me. Real easy to clean, just pop the bin off and dump it and then attack the brush head with your fingers to get hair off. 1 minute cleaning per use tops. While pricey.....it is ideal for doing it for you and will lengthen the time between traditional vacuuming. ![]() |
