Others say...
"If you buy used, Read this!!!" Alright, if you have hard wood, this is your dream! If you have shag or low pile, it really won't work well. Now here is the Used buyer beware. I had not had a roomba before, and 30 mins after taking him out of the box, I was expert. First thing you need to do with a used machine is take the filter out! Take it out, and clean it cause people dont do that EVER! Second, take the brushes off. Can you get them off and on? Do they fit your machine? Are they dirty? In short, know your machine BEFORE you try to use it. After the purchase of a broken robot (i fixed him) AND another robot, I can say with assurance that the filter was NASTY both times. You say I am being to harsh? If your upright vac wont suck, would you empty the bag? If you check the filter, roomba should work well used. "Beware of used Roomba's!" We purchased a used Roomba Discovery on Amazon recently. It was advertised as being in like new condition. We charged the battery according to the instructions we found on iRobot's website. After being fully charged we tried to use it. It ran for a total of five minutes before the battery died. After a lot of trial and error and reading about the vacuum online we discovered that the battery should have been removed before being shipped. If you leave the battery inside the robot for a significant amount of time without vacuuming it will ruin the battery. Actually, in this case it ruined the entire vacuum. iRobot recommended we get our money back because nothing could be done to repair this robot. "Great, but may die young" First, I love the Roomba. It works as advertised and cleans places hard to reach with regular vacs. You'll need to do your own "inside" corners though as the round form does not reach there. Second, be prepared for a short life: Forget that old GE vacuum that your mom ran with for over twenty years. My little cleaning robot croaked after two years. It just stopped re-charging, even after I popped for a new $40 battery, thinking that was the problem. Web searches had no real answer for this somewhat common issue. After working through IRobot customer service's standard suggestions, they finally said they'd sell me a replacement model if I'd return the old one to them. However, their reduced price along with the price for a not-included new power supply was more than a new unit from Amazon. So, I'm the proud owner of a new Roomba, which goes to show how lazy I am about vacuuming. Now I'm waiting for the "Fool me twice..." adage to kick in. "robot roomba 4210 discovery vacuuming robot, white" This was a great product while it lasted, which wasn't very long. The manufacturer did not stand behind their product, even though they knew it had problems. We had relatives who also bought this product. Theirs had the same trouble. It worked great for a short time and then quit. I do not recommend this product! "Great Product! Performs exactly as described." Having been a Roomba owner for several years now this model is an excellent product that performs its duties quite well. Pros - if ran regularly, i.e. weekly, it keeps the floors very clean. - very easy to clean, dump bin & blowing out excess dust w/ canned air - battery life more than sufficient to clean largest rooms - hackable for those more adventurous types Cons - one must periodically perform manually vacuuming tasks to clean those nooks & crannies the Roomba cannot reach - edge sensors causes black carpets to blow your Roomba's mind! - loud enough to make watching TV w/ running Roomba irritating

What our customer's say! "I threw it away", Roomba worked for 6 months and I tried to get a response from the website without luck. When I finally got someone to respond they said that the software was bad and I had to buy a new one and they would give me a discount. Warranty sucks. Customer service treats you like an idiot. Buy an upright vacuum sweeper.$200 down the drain. They have no facility to fix ones that do not work. You have to throw it out and buy another. "Mixed feelings about Roomba after a year", After using my Roomba a year, I've decided I'll probably not buy another when this one gives out. The main reason I bought a Roomba was to save time and concluded Roomba doesn't help much in that department. The time it takes me to set up the room (getting cords and junk out of the way, etc.) plus the time it takes to clean the Roomba out is more than how long it would take me to just whip out the vacuum and kamikaze the floors myself. We've got 2 dogs (short hair but prodigious shedders nonetheless) and 2 teenaged girls (long hair, also shedders) and the hair gets wound up in the brushes. After every run, I have to take the Roomba apart, cut the wound-up hair off the brushes, comb out the rest of the hair, and so on. This is a 15-minute operation by itself. Roomba also does not match the performance a decent rug-beating vacuum does on carpet. If you have lots of hard flooring and don't have hair issues, Roomba is for you. "Stay away! Poor product, worse customer service, required acessories routinely out of stock.", Stay away. Stay far away from this company and their products. Poor quality product, abysmally pathetic customer service after you're already on the hook for $250+, no follow-up with the customer and required accessories are routinely out of stock. It's not worth it even if the thing did occasionally clean a floor now and then. A case in point: My wife purchased a Roomba Discovery as a gift for me. Unfortunately, this model's delicate power supply was initially put on the market with no sort of internal surge suppressor. As a result, a blip in our electricity 9 months later fried the power supply. An iRobot rep dutifully offered to send me a new & improved power supply with surge suppression. This took over 2 months, as they were out of stock due to the aforementioned manufacturing glitch. 12 months and 6 days from the date of purchase, the power supply arrived. We found that the power surge 2 months ago apparently fried the robot itself as well as the power supply. Due to iRobot's incompetence in design and the subsequent lack of in-stock power supplies, we found ourselves outside of iRobot's year warranty period. iRobot refused to replace the robot unless I paid $99 plus shipping for the repair since it was 6 days out of warranty! No amount of discussion would swerve the customer service drone away from charging me to have a repair done on a product that fried while it was still in warranty. He even admitted that he had the whole record (including that they were out of stock on replacement power supplies for close to 3 months) on file. "There's nothing I can do, sir" I was told. In subsequent calls I was told that if I had filed a particular form that was never mentioned by any customer service people, the $99 fee would have been waived, but that it was too late to do anything about it now (like issue a refund or give me, say, $99 worth of accessories.) Nope, no can do, sir. We apologize for the inconvenience but we're still keeping your cash. iRobot then sent me 2 dud "remanufactured" Discovery Roombas before we found one that would actually charge up. (Do they even turn them on to test before they ship them out again?) The "working" one they finally sent would not dock on the self-charging dock from day one. But the same poor customer service that got this nightmare started eventually worked in my favor. Due to what I assume to be a computer glitch (imagine!) a second Roomba showed up on my doorstep a month later via Fed Ex. When the battery gave out after 3 sessions, I was then forced to purchase a new battery. Pity that - iRobot seems to have forgotten to manufacture batteries recently. For the past 4 months the iRobot website has said that Roomba batteries are out of stock and due back "within 4 to 6 weeks." They say not to use non-iRobot brand batteries or they'll void your warranty. What are you meant to do when the only company that sells "approved" batteries won't keep said batteries in stock? Go to eBay like everybody else for after-market "Made in China" knockoffs, I guess. What a hunk of junk. Wait - what HUNKS of junk. I forgot I now have TWO dead Roombas. "hopless battery", Initially very pleased with the iRobot Roomba, & recommended it to numerous relatives & friends, & many of them then purchased iRobots for themselves. Now I'm not recommending it anymore! Very poor battery life ! At $70 + s&h it becomes an annual expense I can do without. Yes it works well when it is working, & even the very frequent cleaning of brushes don't put me off. However when the battery begins to lose life after only 6 months & will only push the iRobot around for 15 minutes before recharge is required, it is no longer a viable piece of equipment, even if you have given it a cute pet name ( its not what I would call it today ). It has become just another bit of clutter for the garage. Hey well, back to the old upright I guess, not so cute but much more efficient. "Makes life easier", I have no regrets about purchasing the Roomba. It helps to keep the carpet clean between sessions with the full-sized vacuum. I can run the Roomba as often as I like without worry, which helps to keep the dog hair at bay. It doesn't get stuck with power cords or suck them up which is great. Just turn it on and let it run on your way to work and you come home to a cleaner floor. Fabulous! Granted cleaning out the hair (dog hair + my long hair) out of the brush can be a bit of a pain but the cleaning tool really eases process. Now I only wish my dog weren't afraid of the little robot - I was hoping she'd get a kick out of it and try to play with it but no such luck. She just runs away whenever Roomba gets too close and looks at me for help. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Great toy and a vacuum cleaner", I've never vacuum anything in my life with this little guy, my floor is always clean. It returns to it's home base when it's low on battery. Great toy to have. Now if IRobot can make a line where the robot emties it's own trash that it collects everyday. This product will be the bomb. I run my roomba daily, so I empty the trash daily and clean out the rollers and brushes. Although the product specs says the runtime is 2 hours but I don't recall roomba ever ran for 2 hours. It just runs for about 45 mins. Maybe I need a new battery, but I rather get a new one than buy a new battery for my old roomba. Great toy, everybody should get one. No, I don't work for Roomba or associate with them in anyway. They did ignored my inquiry regarding a roomba trade in. I guess they don't have a roomba trade in program. "I"m In Love!", I first fell in love with the little red guy when we bought a second home totally carpeted! Wow! I have bad knees and this little fellow ran right under the king sized bed both here and in our second home. It cleaned the carpet, it cleaned the bare wood floors. Ii gave me a little tune if it were stuck. Believe me, I have an Orek and I have had numerous other stand up vacuums and a Rainbow (very cumbersome but excellent!} I use the Rainbow on the carpeted stairs in our three story townhouse. My husband loves the roomba quite as much as me since he is often the key vacuum driver. I carried the little red in the car from San Antonio to Arlington Virginia. I then bought the 4210! Even better! Its bigger so it covers more area before needing to power up. Now I am planning to buy the next newer model! I want the one that watches out for oriental carpet fringe. We have a three floor town house and two of the floors have lots of oriental rugs on wood floors. I want a roomba I can turn lose and not worry about fringe frazzle or falling down stairs! We keep our units plugged in all the time per directions to increase the life of the batteries. I have had little red for over 3 years and no problems. Roomba 4210 is over two years now. No problems. One observation. I clean the roombas carefully, to include wiping out all dust with a paper towel (use a wooden handle to slide in a paper towel envelope). I always remove the filter, clean it of dust, and wash gently with Ivory Liquid and carefully blot dry, then let dry for several hours. This is the greatest labor saving device since the dishwasher! bhart9@comcast.net "IRobot Discovary", I've purchased this unit 2 months ago and I still can't get this unit to work. They have sent me 1 new Irobot and now a new power cord and base. I would not recommend this unit to anyone. It does not WORK!! "This thing is GREAT!", I had seen Roomba at my brothers place. All of the sudden his floors were clean everytime we would visit. I asked him if he had hired a cleaning service and he said "no, we bought a Roomba". He showed me all the things Roomba can do, and explained some of the problems one might encounter, and said he would buy it again without hesitation. Well that sold me. I bought the second generation Roomba 4210 Discover, refurbished. Delivery was quick! It was waiting for me when I came home, I sat down on the floor as soon as I shut the front door and began unpacking it. My husband read the "correction manual" while I unpacked and put everything together. Roomba was up and running in no time at all. We did a little "test" run and were(mostly just me)very excited. I set the schedule to run every-other day, but we have decided that everyday is better. We have two long hair cats, need I say more? Anyway, Roomba does the job without a problem. I have a couple of throw rugs with fringed edges that I pick up, and couple of times a week I pick up the dining room chairs so he can get under the table. We haven't played with the artificial walls yet, as they require 'D' cell batteries, we just close some doors for now. It's easy to use and set-up is a breeze. It's a terrific investment for those who like a clean house when they come home and don't have a lot of time to do the work :) "Come home everyday to clean carpets and floors", We love our roomba! However, be warned: DO NOT BUY FROM EBAY. We had 2 bad experiences. The first one was never shipped. The second one was advertised as new but came broke. Luckily my husband is a handyman and fixed it. Roombas are known for breaking down after a couple of years. The ones on ebay are bound to be old broken ones. If you want to save money, buy a new roomba without all the frills. Or buy a re-furbished roomba. For anyone thinking about what accessories to get, here are my observations: Self charging home base: This is neat when it works. It is nice to come home and see the roomba sleeping on its charger. However, finding it and putting it on the charger is not difficult. Also, the self charging home base does not work well on carpets. The roomba can't get up onto the charger. Virtual walls: These are nice but if you have tables, laundry baskets or chairs, you can easily create your own around your house. I thought we would need one to protect some of our cords but we really didn't. In general the roomba senses a cord there and doesn't go over it. I do use 2 for the downstairs and block off 2 hallway entrances. However, I could easily push a chair over or line up shoes or anything to block off the entrance. I can't think of any other accessories that we have or that would really be necessary. The roomba cleans our hard floors better than I ever could with a broom. It cleans up carpet pretty well but NOT as good as a vacuum would, but that is to be expected. It has difficulty getting over some throw rugs. I am impressed at all the areas it gets into. I have a loft with some weights sitting on the floor. It will bump into all the weights and get clean as much as it can without ever getting caught up in any of my cables, weights or bands. It gets under my desk easily, which is hard with a vacuum. It traces along walls. I hope the edges of my carpets near the wall stay cleaner now. It gets caught on shoe strings, strings on clothes or any small fabric. Also, the brush gets hair wrapped around it pretty easily. I wonder if I had gotten one for pet hair that it would handle that better. The brush, filter and obviously the dirt bin need cleaned regularly. That honestly is the most work you have to do for the roomba. Our roomba provides hours of entertainment. It is definitely neat to watch it work. It is so nice to keep carpets somewhat clean everyday. I don't feel like I vacuum one day then the house gets dirty by the next! And I WILL NEVER BROOM AGAIN! Definitely get one, they are worth it. ![]() |
