Others say...
"Looking forward to lunch!" I wasn't a big leftovers person until I got my Mr. Bento lunchbox. It works particularly well for Asian meals, but of course it is infinitely adaptable. You're only limited by your creativity! The other 5-star ratings say a lot of what I would recommend about this must-have product, but I would add that to prolong the life of your lunchbox, you should wash the inner containers as soon as possible (especially if you are putting staining foods in them, like tomato sauce), and I would remove the soft plastic lids before microwaving if possible-- there's a fine line between a warm lid and a warped lid since the plastic is rather thin. Beyond that, it's pure joy! Oh, and it comes with boring plastic chopsticks, but I added my own give it a personal touch. Presentation is part of what makes eating from this sleek little lunchbox so pleasant. "Does Leak" I got this for my mother who brings lunch to work everyday. She loves it especially the black carrying bag. She did say the 2nd to bottom container did leak, however the bottom container does not leak. It comes with a cute spork. Each lid seemed to close differently. Very cute set. "I {heart} Mr. Bento" This is a nifty little product. I bought 2. I pack up leftover's from dinner for my husband's lunch the next day. I warm it up in the microwave before he leaves for work and by lunch time it is still warm. He loves it for it's convenience, that he doesn't have to stick it in the fridge, that he doesn't have to wait in line to use the microwave and he feels very "avante garde" when all the containers are displayed out waiting to be eaten. It also comes with a stainless steel spork which is so convenient! I use the other Mr. Bento for me and my kids for playdates at the park. I pack fruits and finger sandwiches and the kids love that it's all ready for them. As a mom, I love that it is all contained in this stainless steel container and everything stays either warm or cold, very easy to use and it looks cool too. Lots of mom's have noticed it and have asked me where I got it. I just love my Mr. Bento! "Wonderful Lunch Container" I work in a small office, and this makes a wonderful lunch container for me. Even though I have access to a fridge and microwave, I seldom use them. I heat up my warm foods in the morning before I leave, and they are still warm at lunch. If you like the top containers to stay cold, it is best to have whatever you put in them really cold, i.e. frozen fruit in the very top container keeps the top plenty cold till lunch. I usually have a salad and fruit in the top containers, and since I don't like either really cold, I don't freeze the fruit. I would highly recommend this, and the other Zojirushi containers. "I am in love with Mr. Bento!" Mr. Bento is wonderful and I recommend this everyone! I have used this product with hot foods and cold foods and found it does a great job with insulation. Seems to keep cold foods cold longer then it can keep hot foods hot, but the hot foods are always at the perfect temperature. Never had any problems with leaking or rust or stains or smells retaining in the containers (even with slight abuse by not washing till the morning after). An unexpected benefit for me is how Mr. Bento has changed what I normally eat for lunch daily. Since the containers are small (except the main dish one) it is really hard to put junk food in them. So now I have a lot more fruits and vegetables with my lunches which is great! And because of that, I have lost weight and 2 inches off of my waist! Because you have 4 separate containers, lunch has a lot more variety then just bringing left overs in a Tupperware container. This also helps you get a little more creative with your lunch and variety is the spice of life. I can't get enough of Mr. Bento and at this price it pays for itself easily within a few meals...no more take out or delivery!

What our customer's say! "Zojirushi Mr. Bento", It came as promised and although the box was a bit worn by the time it got to me, it was still pretty good. "I love Mr. Bento!", I have had Mr. Bento for three weeks now and I can honestly say the novelty has not worn off. Even though the containers look small I have more than enough food for lunch and sometimes even a snack. My typical bento lunch consists of a meat in the smaller insulated bowl, salad in the larger insulated one, and a variety of crackers, fruit, pudding, raw veggies, hummus, etc. in the two non-insulated bowls. (I find the non-insulated bowls say cool as well if I don't open the bento until lunchtime) I also pack my lunch at night and stick it in the fridge until I leave the next morning so that may help. I have no experience with heat retention yet..it is summer and am enjoying cold food. My bento came with a spork. I think it is pretty useless so I don't use it. Instead, I just take a regular fork, spoon, and knife from home. I also pack a cloth napkin, it just makes lunch a little more special. :-) I have used the carrying case that came with Mr. Bento but I tend to use a small soft-sided cooler I have more often. I just slip the bento in the cooler along with a bottle of water, my cutlery, napkin, (and my breakfast yogurt if I am running late) and head to work. My co-workers all comment on how cool the Mr. Bento is and they are envious of the variety of foods I bring for lunch. I am thrilled with my purchase and know I will enjoy Mr. Bento for years to come. If you want to see some cool pics of Mr. Bento in action..check out the Mr. Bento Porn group on Flickr (just google it). Lots of fun! "Eento, Lunch box", Great product... would recommend this lunch box to any who has to take a lunch daily... keeps food hot...keep food cold...for about 6 hours... "I love this thing!", Leave it to the Japanese to innovate sack lunches! I purchased this lunch kit after seeing a co-worker many years ago with a Nissan version. I have a Zojirushi rice cooker, so I know they make quality stuff. After re-reading the reviews between the Mr Bento and the Nissan version, I bought the Mr Bento b/c of the volume of favorable reviews as well as other tangibles, such as the carrying case, spoon, and the cool design. Product-wise, I am very happy. Despite some negative reviews about it not being insulated, I really dont understand what they are talking about. We have an electric water kettle that I fill up the night before to about 4 cups. When I go downstairs for breakfast, I flip the switch and take my bento containers out that I want to heat up in the microwave. I'll eat my yogurt or breakfast in the meantime. When the water is done, I'll pour the water into Mr Bento and allow it to sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. At the tail end of the water time, I'll microwave my food for about 2-3 minutes. Then I'll dump the water and put the food into the container. I have had some late lunches (2 to 3pm) on occasion and the food was still warm-hot...hot enough to eat. One thing you'll notice is that you will *think* that you are not eating enough, but once you dig into your own lunches, you will probably not be very hungry! You can pack alot of food. Perhaps we Americans are so used to being overfed when we buy lunch outside. In terms of design, here are my two gripes: 1) the bottom most soup container can be a real bear to open sometimes, esp when it is damp and/or tightly closed. 2) I wish the top closable dome lid was metal like the body of the Mr. Bento. Plastic dome = cheap. Similarly, I wish the latch/clasps were metal. Plastic = wear. The nice bag is a great value add. If you can't tell, there are two extra pouches sewed onto the outside. Great for sauce packets or mid meal snacks. Tips: 1) I cut out an old metallic bubble type car shade into a circle and use it as an insulation barrier for the hot and the cold food. Personally, i think it makes a big difference. If you do the same, make sure that the circle is slightly bigger than the cylinder itself so you get a good seal. 2) Cut your food into bite sized pieces. Cutting anything inside these containers is not easy, esp the taller one. On that note, I purchased a Boker Snacpac as someone recommended b/c of the portability of the entire utensil set. The knife is the only good thing about it. The spoon is useless for anything but stirring a French espresso in a little cup. the fork is way too narrow. So I just use the supplied Mr. Bento spoon and the Boker knife which is quite nice. 3) If you have foods or sauces that you think might stain, consider lightly oiling the surface with your fingers or use Saran Wrap to line the inside (which is what I do). Spare parts: yes, they do have them and for just about every part, including container lids. I will post up the reply I received from a nice Zojirushi representative at a later date. Oh yeah, I have been losing a little weight b/c now I am in control of my meals. Not to mention with gas prices the way they are now, every little kind of money saving activities like packing lunch helps in the end. "Bento-licious!", Very well made, the pieces are of high quality. PROS: ===== * The shoulder sling is adjustable * Very high quailty construction * Works well to keep foods cold until lunch after spending the night in the fridge. * Easy to clean despite not being dishwasher safe CONS: ===== * Spork pocket inside keeps the spork rather loose and isn't well made * Rubber seal ring in soup container hard to remove, even with short nails * Directions lacking for how to (if at all) use the venter(?) on the soup container Despite the cons, this is a well made product which I use daily to bring lunch to work. The containers are well sized to give variety and still have a small lunch to a fairly large sized lunch which will satisfy almost all but the most ferocious of appetites. I'm a 200 poundish male and this gives me more than enough food for both breakfast at work, a snack, and lunch. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Unique and practical", This is a very practical lunch box. It comes with a carrying bag, which comes in handy when you commute by bus or train. This bento box can hold a surprisingly large amount of food. The bottom container with its screw-on lid is better suited for soup. The second container is the largest and best for a main course. It has a thick insulated lid. The top two containers are great for cold food, like salads and fruits. This is more expensive than a standard lunch box but the quality and unique design of this item justify the higher price "Way Overpriced", Just take your stuff in tupperware this stuff is severly overpriced and stains easily if you put and heavy sauces. Don't Bother "Great thermos/bento jar!", Keeps food hot or cold & liquid/spill-proof bowl does a good job. Don't try to put liquids in the other containers! You'll have a mess. I have a hard time filling up every container when packing it for just one person, but we recently took it on a trip to the zoo and it held enough food for two adults and a toddler! "Perfect for lunch!", I'm only on my fourth Mr. Bento lunch day, but already I'm loving it! The only complaint I have is that the upper two bowls with the snap on lids don't stay cold. It's difficult to mix hot and cold the way that this is designed. You either need to make a cold/room temp lunch or warm/room temp lunch. There are some ingenious ways you can mix temperatures though, from making a metal disk out of roof flashing to reflect heat to freezing yogurt or pudding into the lower of the two upper bowls to keep them cool. I've found that works very well, my yogurt is defrosted by lunch time and the upper bowl has in turn been kept cold, but the lower two bowls are still piping hot. I haven't found that freezing yogurt has any unappetizing affect on the yogurt's texture or taste. The bowls are indeed quite large, and even with a vegetarian diet (generally considered to be low-calorie), I have no problems stuffing my Mr. Bento with 800-900 calories worth of food. That's a very large meal! I usually eat 400-500 in one sitting, so I use some bowls for lunch and others for snacks. The possibilities in combinations are endless, and I'm enjoying coming up with new ideas for snacks and meals. Today was mulligatawny soup, quinoa with fresh mozzarella and eggplant-tomato ragu, yogurt with pineapple and granola, and chickpea salad. The outer pocket on the carrying case is the perfect place to fit my 3pm protein bar and is useful for carrying napkins and a sandwich bag of granola so it doesn't get mushy. I'm not really in need of keeping foods hot or cold at work since we have both a fridge and microwave, though both are questionable in regards to cleanliness. It's nice not to have to "heat and eat", since I can do that in the morning when I pack the jar. I just open up my Mr. Bento and start eating. Neat! Mr. Bento's usefulness really comes into play after bike races. My teammates will be sitting around nibbling on a sports bar and protein shake, meanwhile I'm stuffing my face with hot daal, basmati rice and garlic naan. Can we say jealous!??! Yes, $40+ might be a bit much for a lunch box, but I figure I only need to bring my lunch 4x a week for 2 weeks to break even on eating out. Plus, I tend to pack much healthier foods and I know what the calorie content is of everything in my lunch jar... something that can't be said when dining out. "Excellent - great for those watching calories!", This is a great product that has made itself indispensable to me! Four compartments of varying sizes allow you to customize your meal. I use this along with the Weight Watchers flex points and find this ideal - I can pack a healthy lunch along with snacks that rarely exceeds 8 points (you have to be conscientious - a big mac will likely also fit in the largest compartment - so make good choices!). Easy to clean, top rack diswasher safe, non-staining, temperature regulating and most importantly - spill resistant! I highly reccomend this!!! Example lunch: large compartment: 3 oz steamed cod with capers, vacuum sealed compartment: green salad with balsamic vinegar, medium lidded compartment: 1 oz pretzel crisps, small lidded compartment: 5 water crackers. Slip a reduced fat mozzarella string cheese into the side pocket and you have an excellent balanced (for me) meal and snacks that will power you through the day. I cannot guarantee your success, however using this has assisted me (in addition to training 6 days a week) in losing over 20 lbs since purchase. Great for those who need assistance with portion control - or, like me - just want to make life easy :) Enjoy! ![]() |
