"Works like a charm and has held up for years"
I've had this kettle for around four years now and everything is still working fine. The kettle boils water quickly and efficiently, and I've never had any problems with the auto-shutoff mechanism. The auto-shutoff takes longer to trigger if the lid is not closed completely, but as long as you operate the kettle according to specifications, you should have no problems.

The cordless feature is especially welcome, allowing me to serve hot water anywhere in the house (or even outside, on nice spring afternoons!). I often brew multiple pots of tea, so it is nice to have a portable hot water source.

The design is not particularly space-saving, but it maximizes exposed area for the heating element, allowing for fast boiling.

I own one of these kettles and have bought the same model for family and friends, and would not hesitate to do so again.

"Kettle with several design flaws"
Here are some design problems with this kettle:
1: the buttons to open the lid are awkward to use, requiring a strange clawing motion.
2: the "on" lamp is on the side away from you when you're using the kettle, so it's not visible.
3: letting the lid fall down often doesn't close it completely, but even if it's just very slightly open the cut-off switch doesn't work and the water boils away till the pot is dry.
4: being right at the bottom of the pot, the heater switch is easily turned on by accident if you bump something against the pot -- even a newspaper.

"Does not last much past warranty period"
I have had 4 of these now. I found it to boil water quite quickly. I also had the problem with one of them that the filter would fall out, but was able to pop it back in easily.

The main issue is that only one has last beyond 2 years. Usage on the longer lasting one is probably 1-2 times per day, and on the ones that did not last, maybe a bit less.

"express kettle"
I love this kettle for several reasons: the element is not inside the teapot so cleaning is easy; it comes off the base for pouring so no tangling with cords; it can also be positioned at any orientation on the base so, for example, the spout can be turned to "steam" away from the overhead cupboards; it has auto-shutoff; and it's fast.

The only thing that could be improved is that the "on" light and the "on" switch are on opposite sides so the teapot must be turned to check if I did indeed switch it on. A very small thing considering I can simply swivel the teapot on the base.

"It boils the water, but has problems"
We've owned this kettle for over a year, and I've used it daily in that time. It does boil water quickly, which is what it's supposed to do, but it has several quirks which are annoying at best and dangerous at worst.

- As another commenter noted, the water filter is easy to dislodge, and when it's not in properly the auto shut-off won't work. Also, the filter is very flimsy, and when I was trying to re-set it once I accidentally poked a finger through it. (It still works with the hole in it.)

- It's hard to get the lid to stay open, so filling the jug from the tap is awkward. I have to hold the lid with one hand. Because of this, if the kettle is hot when I want to refill it, I sometimes come close to getting a steam burn.

- Over time, the lid has stopped sealing properly unless smacked shut hard. If we forget to slam it shut, the auto shut-off doesn't work. Sometimes we think it's shut but it's not, and we walk away thinking it's fine only to come back five minutes later to find the kettle still at a full boil.

It was a great kettle when we first purchased it, but with use and time it's become less safe and I'm considering buying a replacement now. At least it wasn't horribly expensive.

Melitta MEK17W 1.7-Liter Express Kettle

List Price : $24.99
Our Price : too low to display

Why I buy this one ?
- Underfloor stainless steel heating
- Automatic safety shut-off
- Separate power light

What our customer's say!

"easy to maintainWorks well, smooth base", Advantages:
- Boils water fast
- Smooth stainless base inside,
without metal prongs like immersion heater
- Swivel base
- Has water level indicator
- Excellently priced

Can be improved
- On/Off light switch position, currently opposite handle
A better place for the On/off light would be below the water level indicator.

Very happy with the product. I bought this cordless electric kettle in Oct 2007, use it several times a day with no problem.

The only thing I'd improve on the product is position of the On/Off light switch, which is opposite the handle; not a big issue as I turn it around on its swivel base.

I bought this to replace a Krups cordless electric kettle that went kaputt after I dropped it on the floor. Other reviewer on this product mentioned they had dropped it twice and theirs is still functioning. That is impressive, considering the Krups is a much more expensive kettle.

"Gets the job done", We bought this at Target about a year ago and it has always done the job just fine (it does take a little while to boil the max-or near max-amount though) but is relatively quick for just a cup of tea in the morning. Today the filter broke on it (inexplicably) so after going to the melitta website I am going to call the 800 number posted to request a replacement part. If its too much hassle I'll just get a different one-but that is not a dig at this little kettle because I definitely feel that I have gotten my moneys worth out of it! Also, it doesn't look cheap, it has a nice appearance.

"Works like a charm", I don't know why people say it takes the Express Kettle so long to heat up water-when I've used it-been using it for only a few days-daily-and it's heated up the water VERY quickly.I think the only way it would take a long time is if you had it filled to the max.

But yeah.It heats water in about 2-5 minutes, which is fast(I'm used to a garden variety kettle, and it took-no lie-close to 10-15 minutes to heat water.)

You can't get much better than this-and you can't beat the price-it certainly doesn't look like it should be in the $20 price range. I bought one after seeing one in action at my aunt's house.I drink lots of tea,so you know it gets a lot of use. :)

"worst ever ", This one of the worst electric teakettle I have used. Please people don't buy it if you don't want fire on your hands. First of all, you need quite enough might to close lid shut. You may think you closed it but in reality you don't, you have to push it down very hard. Second of all, the filter dislodges very easily. These two reasons are the main cause of automatic shut off function not to shut off at all. So you pour the water put the kettle on and off you go. And you know what- you may came back and notice that plastic kettle almost on a verge of melting because current wasn't shut down by shut off function since filter dislodged itself or lid wasn't really closed or both and it is boiling and boiling and boiling. Very dangerous product indeed.

"good for the price", for under 20 dollars its hard to beat. just don't leave water in it for long periods after use. i think some of the bad reviews are from previous revisions, mine seems to work fine. that being said, they seemed to have made different versions. some have stainless steel interior bottoms, others have chromed bottoms. i think the chrome can rust and pit easily so it is a lottery.

"Perfect for single serving folks", As of this writing, this little guy has performed reliably for me over the past 2 months with at least daily use. Bought on sale at Tahget, the hands-down best feature for me is that the metal floor is what heats the water. This allows me to boil a minimal amount of water (no heating element requiring full immersion) for my single-serving lifestyle. The cordless feature has been really handy, too, and the design is cute and Michael Graves-like.

My only gripe is that the kettle closes to a small top opening, and the inside won't dry out unless I leave the lid open. Haven't had any auto shut-off problems just yet (due to a dislodged filter/ajar lid), but will update if any problems emerge. Perfect for small apartments and college dorms, tea aficionados and instant-oatmeal breakfasters alike!

"Beware of electric base connection", I bought this kettle over a year ago and used it daily, but am now having the following problem. The electrical connection on the base has got very loose, so the kettle won't turn on unless I wiggle the plug and pull it into just the right position every time I use it. Bit annoying really, not to mention the risk of getting a shock!

"Cheap and fast boiling kettle", This kettle deserves consideration for anyone considering this color. It's not expensive, but doesn't look cheap. It sits on the stand easily, and you don't have to have cable dangling all over the counter top.

The position of the handle is in the right place to pick up the weight of even a full kettle. The auto off feature works reliably.

We bought a second unit when the first one started to show signs of age after a couple of years, during which tiem it was dropped on the floor twice (we use it about 10 times a day).

"JW", I was skeptical at first as I thought It could not boil water any faster than a teakettle. It can't but it is infinitely more convenient than a teakettle and I find I use it all the time.

"This kettle is excellent!", I use this kettle at least 5 times a day to heat up water for tea. It always brings my water to a boil in less than 2 minutes. The on/off handle gives an audible click when the water is done (as well as the red light turns off), and it has never failed to automatically shut off. Of course, I'm usually nearby, so once the water is done I always take it off the electrical base. I do not store it plugged in, so I don't have to worry about it magically turning on by itself and burning over. The handle and the base of the kettle do not get hot, so you can set it on the table and not worry about it burning anything. The lid opens and shuts quite easily. You do have to pinch it to open it but it's not like it takes a lot of strength to do so. The on/off switch is very clear, just push it down and it's on. I really like it and it works great!
