"Disappointed with this product" Being in the market for a 7 qt. enameled cast iron dutch oven, the 7 qt. Lodge appeared to have the right stuff with 4 coats of enamel, substantial weight, attractive appearance and some cost savings. However, when it arrived I was very disappointed with the quality. As other reviewers have noted, the bottom was not flat and the pot would actually rock on the stove top. There were 3 pin-hole defects in the interior enamel resulting in exposure of bare metal. Cosmetically, the exterior enamel was uneven. Would these issues effect cooking ability? Maybe not, but this product apears to be a cheap chinese knock-off. So, I have returned this $165 (Amazon price) item and went out a bought a $250, 71/4 qt. Le Creuset at a local retailer - note that this price differential is $85, not $100+ or "double " the price as stated in some reviews. And the Le Creuset is perfect. "wonderful" I had been wanting an enameled cast iron dutch oven for a long time but with the high cost I had put it off. I thought the cost of this was reasonalbe for the large size (7 quart) so I bought it. It is very nice, a good size, and well constructed. The handles on the side are a bit small but I can deal with that. Go ahead and get this, I don't think you will be disappointed. "Nice pot, great price" I have used this pot several times now. It looks good, works well and is a lot less expensive then other enameled cast iron pots. "Very Happy with the 7qt Dutch Oven" I have both the red and blue 7-qt dutch ovens and couldn't be happier. They cook evenly and hold their heat extremely well. They are quite heavy when full, but that's to be expected from cast iron. Considering the difference in cost, I would definitely purchase other Lodge products over the French. Would love to see more enameled products. "Finally, enameled cast-iron for the common cook!" I own a few Le Creuset pieces of cookware and love them all. I was really excited to see that Lodge now offers enameled cast iron cookware at much more reasonable prices. I've only used it a few times but so far I am just as happy with this as I think I would be with the one that costs three times what this one does and has a pretty French name. Any complaints about the weight of this pot or other cast iron ones seem silly to me. Yes, they are all heavier than other pots and pans--that is lot of the reason why cast iron cooks food so evenly. If you want lightweight, look elsewhere.

Lodge Enamel Dutch Oven
What our customer's say! "Check it carefully for defects", Our pot had a lopsided bottom and would teeter back and forth on a burner or flat surface. I sent an eMail to Lodge and they replaced it at their cost. However the replacement is also defective. The bottom is flat but the top edge of the pot is not. Consequently the top rocks back and forth and leaves an open gap about the thickness of a round toothpick on one side or the other. The top also has blemishes in the enamel, like "fish eyes". We are tired of dealing with defective Made In China merchandise and haven't decided if we want to take a chance on another replacement or live with this one. Nevertheless, we only paid $74.99 for it on sale at Amazon so it is well worth the price but I would not pay full price for one. "Why Buy Le Creuset When You Can Have a Lodge?", I debated for awhile about getting a Le Creuset and just couldn't justify the price so I looked around and thought I'd take a chance on this Lodge Dutch Oven. I use it all of the time -- it makes the best soups ever! In the oven or on the stove, this is an amazing piece of kitchenware and I'm so glad I made this purchase! It's beautiful, it cooks beautifully, it washes out well and I like the form and function of the handle on the lid, and the side handles are well-designed to use with mitts. Once I burned it a bit and called Lodge to ask what to do. They told me to put water in it and add a few tablespoons of bleach and let it sit. Much to my amazement, that did the trick and it looks new again! Oh, and save the rubber holders that come with it. They are meant for storage. I threw mine out and then realized my mistake when I talked with Customer Service -- and they sent a new set of the holders to me at no charge! Amazon sent this quickly with no shipping fees. Thanks, Amazon! GET THIS ITEM! You will be thrilled:) "My new favorite in the kitchen", Had considered the Tramontina and the LeCreuset dutch ovens too, but decided on the Lodge because of its size (bigger than the Tramontina), color(loved the blue), my prior good experience with Lodge skillets, its metal handles/lid knob (which permitted it to be used in higher temps than the LeCreuset) and, of course, its price (about half the price of the LeCreuset). When it arrived, there were some problems with the finish - there were a couple of nicks in the enamel, so I sent it back. Amazon was great - No questions asked, didn't have to pay return shipping, and a replacement arrived within days. The replacement dutch oven was in great condition and has been a great success. I love cooking with it. Have made several stews/braised dishes already, and have nothing but good things to say. It's my new favorite in the kitchen. "Great Value", I orderd this piece and was told it would take 4-6 wks for delivery but it arrived 5 days later and that was with free super saving shipping. I've used it 4 times already and it was everything I was hoping for and more. I saved over $100 buying here instead of from Lodge's website and it was shipped for free. I don't know how Amazon does it but THANK YOU!! "Shame on Lodge or Amazon?", I was so looking forward to receiving this 7 Qt. Dutch oven. What a disappointment. This is OBVIOUSLY a SECOND, not first quality. The bottom is not quite level, there's a pin hole size chip on the interior, the lid does not fit at all no matter which way it's turned. I'm not paying to ship it back for exchange because chances are I'd only be shipped another second. Instead, I will NOT BE ORDERING ANYTHING ELSE MARKED "LODGE ENAMEL" FROM AMAZON. Yes, the price was a good price. But obviously there is no quality control on this particular product since there's no possibility the lid on this pot could have passed. If Amazon is selling seconds or thirds, THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO STATE THAT A PRODUCT IS A SECOND OR THIRD & let the customer decide if they want to take a chance. IF LODGE IS KNOWINGLY SELLING THEIR SECONDS TO RETAILERS AS FIRST QUALITY, SHAME ON LODGE NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE. 
Read this reviews before You buy... "Lodge Enamel", Good product. I hope Lodge will expand their line in the future. I will buy more. "As Advertised", $300 to France, or $100 to China? It's cast iron with an enamel coating!It's not a high tech item! This is the second Lodge Dutch oven I have bought. I know there are complaints about quality issues, but I have had none. My 5 and 7 quart pots have become the work horses of my kitchen. "Lodge 7 Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven", Until finding the Lodge Dutch Oven I was almost suckered into dropping over $250 for the LeCreuset one. This oven was $100 with free shipping! THIS DEAL IS A NO BRAINER!!! It's heavy, well enameled and the handle is bolted through the lid, not tack welded. I used it the same night it arrived and it was a joy to cook with! For you unfortunate cooks who spent $300 for the "pinky-up" brand you have my sympathies, for the ones looking for a good affordable 7 Qt. cast iron enamel Dutch Oven...BUY IT! "Enamel chipped off after 2nd use ", Was really happy with the price savings over the Creuset brand, and was very eager to use. However, after 2nd use, a 3" x 2" section of enamel chipped off the inside bottom, ruining my potroast... Horribly disappointed, because I love all of my other cast iron cookware. Won't be buying this brand again... "Great Pot 4.5 stars", FYI if you're buying this for the NYTimes no knead bread recipe: it's a bit big despite the recommendation of a 6-8qt pot. The bread turns out a bit large and flat, but still amazing. Dinged half a star because there's a couple of small hot spots on the bottom, but for the price, a great deal compared to Le Creuset. Also beautiful with handle that can handle heat. |
