Others say...

"not shun, but still good"
these are made by kershaw, not shun. i dont know if these are the same company or something. either way, the shears are excellent. they come apart easily for cleaning after cutting things like raw chicken. they are sturdy and although the plastic handle seems cheap they work very well. i only use them as shears, i have yet to use the bottle opener, etc.

"would never buy a shear without a bone notch"
We've tried a couple shears over the years and this one model stands out because of

(1) its bone notch,
(2) its solid feel, and
(3) its ability to be taken apart for cleaning.

The last two are apparently mutually exclusive for some brands... Fortunately, the hinge is very sturdy on this one after you put the shears together.

Try to cut a chicken and you will know the difference.

P.S. Shun and Kershaw brands are both owned by Kai.

"Best Shears"
We bought these shears a little while ago, and they have been nothing but great. They fit wonderfully in both mine and my boyfriend's hands, which is great because I have much smaller hands than he does. Plus, I'm left-handed and do not have a problem using these shears either right or left-handed. We love that they come apart, so they can be cleaned properly after cutting raw meat. And they seem to cut through anything without a problem at all. We've used them to cut through packaging, pizza, hotdogs, pepperoni, beef, chicken, and even a kudzu bush so we could save a feral dog who got tangled in it! They're dead useful and much nicer than any knock-off comparison that you'd find at Target, Walmart, or Linens N' Things!

"Same brand as Kershaw"
The rating I'm providing on this product isn't completely fair. It may deserve a higher rating (or less). I've purchased this as a gift, so not sure how well it performs. But I felt I should weigh in and let people know what I didn't and that is it's the same as Kershaw. In fact I ordered this from the listed seller and received the Kershaw brand. It looks exactly the same, so I'm assuming it's the same company. But one thing I noticed is that other sellers are selling the Kershaw brand of these shears at a much lower price.

"Great shears"
These shears just feel nice in your hand when you open and close them. You can snip herbs as easily as you will whole chickens or plastic food packaging. The best part is how easy they come apart (when you want them to) for cleaning and then go back together quickly with no screws or pieces to misplace. These are the shears that Alton Brown singled out in one his Good Eats episodes. My original pair came from Williams & Sonoma (12/06) and included a plastic sheath with a magnet for $39.95. The second pair I purchased through Amazon for a gift came without the sheath but since I have had no use for mine I think the trade-off in regards to price was well worth it.

What our customer's say!

"GREAT SHEARS", I bought these shears to go with my Shun knives. The other reviewers are correct when they say these are actually Kershaw shears. Kershaw is part of Kai, USA, as is Shun. At any rate these are great shears, made in Japan, wonderfully sharp out of the package, very ergonomic and have all the bells and whistles one would expect from a great pair of shears. I like them more than my messermeister's, they are larger and have more mechanical advantage when cutting bone. Cutting fins off of fish has just gotten a lot easier and butterflying a chicken is a snap. Highly recommend these shears.

"Versatility and Quality by Shun/Kershaw", These shears cut smoothly and easily, they're sharp enough for any task you might want to put them to. They're also sturdy and comfortable, the plastic handle doesn't slip or slide. They disassemble easily for cleaning, but stay solidly together when you want them together. The add-on features like bone notch and bottle opener all work well, but I like the notches on the inside of the handle, which are meant to be grips for opening jars and such. Overall, this is one of my most often used tools because it does about a dozen different tasks and does those tasks well.

My pair came with a plastic sheath with a magnet attached, designed to stick to your fridge, oven, or hood. This might be handy for those of you who keep your knives in a block without space for shears but since I use magnetic knife strips I simply keep my shears firmly stuck there instead.

One note about branding, since some other reviewers have mentioned it. Shun is owned by Kershaw. These shears are marketed as part of the Shun cutlery sets, but will say Kershaw on the blade. Don't sweat it- the names are basically interchangeable. The Kershaw brand makes some great utility/pocket knives, by the way. I owned Kershaw knives before I ever even heard of Shun. And if you're a really observant fan of Good Eats, you'll notice that Alton's pocket knife is a Kershaw ;)

"Shun Kitchen Shears", I purchased these shears for a Christmas present for my husband. He kept saying that he couldn't cut up a whole chicken to put on the grill. So I thought this would help me and him. Since he does all the grilling. We already have put them to use and love the way they handle and cut. I put them in the dishwasher to clean. They feel very good in your hand and comfortable. I would definetly say where a great purchase.
Thanks Amazon.com and Kitchen Kaper's

"Best choice at this price point", These should last a very long time, 20 years or so if you do not leave in water all the time. I have gotten by for years with the two dollar cheapos from Ikea; just buy a new pair every 2 years or so. Difference is nite and day of course; these blow any cheapo away.

One person below complained above that the identical item branded Kershaw is sold much cheaper, but it is only two bucks cheaper.

"Excellent Tool for Kitchen and Life", These are my all-time favorite tool in the house. I use them for everything. Kerhsaw is known for their high-qulaity and these shears are no exception. They handle any job, clean easily and last forever. An excellent purchase!

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Who Knew??!", This is my third pair of kitchen shears. The first was $10 and lasted a week. I thought the second pair was just fine until my Shun shears arrived. These cut well and are also very smooth while cutting. They fit my hand nicely. I can really feel the difference in quality. These can perform different functions -- opening bottles, jar opener, nut cracker -- one blade has a curve in it to accomodate bone. I love that they are dishwasher safe.

I probably wouldn't have purchashed these if I were not completing a Shun set. But now that I have them, this is what I should have been using all along.

"Shun Makes High Quality Items", I love Shun and I love these kitchen shears. The whole thing is very heavy duty and feels of quality and durability. If you open it up all the way, it unhinges very easily for ease of cleaning. When you put it back together, it's solid again. It's very easy to do and does not sacrifice sturdiness. These are all purpose kitchen shears and I can't think of any improvements. The handle is made of some heavy duty plastic that's lines for non-slip. It's very rugged and utilitarian, but I'm not that hot about plastic. Luckily, it looks good and the quality and feel still can't be beat.
