Others say...
"easy to operate and plenty loud" I bought this for use in a research lab. It cost about half of what scientific supply houses charge for similar timers and seems to work just as well. I appreciate the easy operation and extra-loud alarm, which is easily heard even in a busy lab environment. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I bought two just in case... "West Bend kitchen timer" I find that this timer is very handy but I do agree with another reviewer that the sound when it goes off is quite loud and scary. But, hey, that's what it's supposed to do! Keeps you on your toes! "Fantastic!" I bought one of these timers for my house. My husband likes it so much, I am buying another one for his business! Easy to use and punching in the time you want rather than holding down a button for what seems like hours is a great feature. "Nice timer with fast entry" What's nice: time entry is fast, using the numbered buttons. Just enter 345 for 3 mins 45 secs and hit go... Love this! Could be better: the back of the unit is ok - at least the magnet is strong enough to make it stick. The fold-out mechanism that allows standing it upright is a little dorky (but not weak), and makes the unit sit somewhat far from the magnetic surface. I may frankenstein the back and remove the hinging clip and attach the magnet directly, as I don't need the thing to stand on my counter. Minor negative: Some reviewers mentioned (correctly) that the timer does not reset to the time you entered when time is up. It *would* be nice to know what the original set time was when the timer goes off, or to just hit go if you have repeat timings with the same time. Verdict: I am surprised at the huge amount of BAD timers out there, whether online or in retail stores, for perhaps half the money. Most are really sub-par: weak (nonfunctional) magnets, confusing buttons, bad cases, crooked electronics... and they're still all around $8-$15. This one is sturdy and fast. If you need a basic timer without any additional frills or timekeeping, you'll be happy with this one, at a slightly higher price. Recommended. "waste of money" total waste of money. i dont know why this timer is any more expensive than all other. it offers NOTHING other than minute and second count down. oh... well... it can count down 99hours and 99 minutes if you need that... but what i needed is a timer that shows time, and can count down up to 12 hrs at most. this one is 3 times more expensive than all others (the picture is misleading - i did assume that it also shows time because of it). dont recommend. returning mine. also - i bought 2 and one came in an open package. returning both.

What our customer's say! "Terrible kitchen timer purchase", The unit failed after the second day of use. I would stronly recommend that you remove this item from your catalog so that others dont have to share in my experience. "Bigger and better than the previous model.", WEST BEND made something very similar to this many years ago (like 10 or maybe 15 years ago?), ye old model number 40005. We liked them so well we kept two in our kitchen. One day, one finally stopped working (and it wasn't merely the battery). The other has developed a key bounce (typical of the technology). SO, we tried a couple of those nasty 'press hold and wait (ho hum) until it gets there' timers that are (apparently) so popular (because those are all we could find around town) and we couldn't stand them. Thankfully, I found these on Amazon, the new model 40005X. DIFFERENCES between the old and new models include: a) old used hearing-aid sized battery, new uses AAA. b) Old limited to 99 min and 99 seconds (4 digits), new can time up to 99 hours, 99 min, 99 seconds (6 digits). c) new has larger buttons! and larger display! d) old timer could only count down, new counts-down or counts up from zero. e) new is slightly larger and stands at 90 degrees on the battery compartment (as shown) or leans back to an easy to read (perhaps) 55-50 degrees on a fold-out clip. old couldn't stand at 90 degrees. f) old and new have the same volume. g) as I recall, the old model's magnet was too weak to hold it to the fridge, but new model's magnet is larger. (Our remaining old model no longer has a magnet; it fell off the fridge early on in its life and the magnet popped off -- I kid you not. I haven't dropped the new model yet, but it looks sturdier). Like someone else said, you'd have to take it off the fridge and hold it in your hand to set the timer. (We're used to leaving them on the counter). USAGE EXAMPLEs: To set the timer to 4 hours, 30 minutes, press 4, 3, 0, 0, 0, and start. To count up, press stop/reset to zero the display (unless it is already zero) and then press start. (Great for the BBQ). UPDATED Oct 21, 2008 - OHHHH NOOOO! One of the two units developed a problem with the display after only a little more than a month of use! The left-hand column for the minutes digit started flickering, and now it won't display! (i.e., It can't display a 1 in the minutes digit). New battery didn't help. Still works, just annoying. I guess they don't make them like they used to. (Made in China) "No off switch, weak magnet", I think the biggest thing missing from this is an off switch. But, if you don't mind burning through batteries or taking the battery out when you're done using it...then i guess it's okay. The magnet isn't very sturdy either. This was a disappointment because I like that you can type in the number. "Good", I find it interesting that this product has a 4+ star rating despite being 1/3 of the product west bend 40053 in which has a 3 star rating. Why does this one have close to 5 star and the which is far superior (it has 3 seperate timers that work at one time) has a much lower rating despite costing just a few dollars more? The answer is probably expectation. If we try and accept life more for how it is and less for how we would like it to be we would all be a bit more joyful, this is not to say we should aim for mediocraty, but try and be more satisfied with it as this is a perfect example where our happiness is cleary on our attitude. "excellent product and service", Having purchased timers before, I really like the timer size and features. Small enough to take up minimal space on counter, but digits are large enough to be read without wearing my reading glasses. A big plus is being able to punch in the exact time I want rather than using a single button that forces you to wait for the time to incrementally progress to the time you want. Reset button works much better than those where you must hold down multiple buttons at once so all digits revert to zero. Beeping sound is sufficiently loud and not an irritating sound. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Works great!", If all you need is a simple timer, this works great. Easy to enter and use. It's more precise than I needed (allowing you to enter seconds, as well as minutes and hours), but it works well. Nice magnetic back holds on nicely to the front of my dishwasher, but comes off easily when I need it. UPDATE - The magnet came off the back of this timer. Didn't appear to have much glue on it to start with, so I glued it back on and it works fine again. "Timer instability", I, too, found the timer's instability annoying - a significant design flaw for an otherwise very nice timer. So I glued a 1/2" shim on either side of the magnet. Now I love it. "Incredibly versatile, easy to use timer", First, I just love the loud timer. Even with a large, loud middle school class, I can hear the timer clearly. Setting the timer is a snap. Simply enter the minutes and seconds (or hours, minutes, and seconds if you wish), press Start, and you're all set. There are even the ten digits on the timer to facilitate the process. It can stand by itself on a desk, or I can use the magnetic back to attach it to my marker board. The days of the old wind-up bell timer are over for me! "Not a bad timer", I like this timer because you can input the exact number of minutes rather than having to hold down a minute or hour key to count up. . . and it works fine. The downsides: the alarm is shrill and there's no reset (there's a reset button, but it just clears the time). If you want to use the same time interval again, you have to reinput it each time. "The best little timer ever invented~", This is the best little timer ever invented! I used to have an old digital timer where you have to press the button as many times as the number of seconds or minutes you needed to set it on. But with this one, all you have to do is just type in on the number pad the number of hours, minutes, and seconds (literally in seconds) and voila! Your timer is set. I don't see how anyone would not use this. It's such a TIME saver!!! Look no further~ This is worth every cent you will spend on a timer, unless of course you would like to just sit and keep pressing the button as long as it takes to set a timer... ![]() |
