"tastes like yuuuuuck"
Tried this coffee maker for 2 days, we are taking it back to the store. Can't get rid of the burned plastic smell and flavor, it makes the worst cup of coffee I ever tried to drink.

"not worth it "
I wanted a basic coffeemaker that make decent coffee. I do not expect this coffeemaker to brew the best considering the price point. But, directions were unclear, the water filtration stick, what a gimmick...
Also, I have used this coffee maker, my husband used it and we are yet to pour a cup of coffee without it spilling out over my counter! Coffee spills out of the carafe as you pour...
I will probably invest in a better machine next time.

"coffee maker"
works great, many features, even used the 3 cup brew already. Love the smell of coffee brewing, while lying in bed....... good price and speedy delivery.

"Poor functionality, good brew"
I'll try to keep this short and sweet. The quality of the brew from the FME4 is very, very good. However there are some poor functional areas.

First, the maker prompts me to "descale" far, far too often. I use bottled spring water and I'm prompted approximately every 28-30 brews which consist of no more than 4 cups at a time. The manual states I should be prompted approximately every 80-100 times. I just want to make coffee, not filter 8 oz. of white vinegar through it all the time.

Secondly, the water level meter on the side is useless. It consistently fills with air bubbles rendering the read-out useless. A close friend of mine has the same model and also reports he has this problem.

I would also agree with others here that the latch for the filter is somewhat poorly made but it has not failed me. I've owned the unit for about two months now.

Their customer service support took 9 days to return my email inquiry and they only replied with a cookie-cutter/canned email offering warranty service. My opinion is that all their FME4 models will behave the same. These are design flaws, not a single unit flaw.

In the end I'd advise folks not to purchase this coffee maker.

"works great, and it does it fast"
also look at my review of the gold tone filter which I highly recommend you purchase for this coffee maker.

This works great. It is digital, so its fairly easy to use. Do read the manual so you know what you are doing BEFORE you start making coffee. the nice beep a the end is nice it you are busy doing something else, it will remind you your coffee is done. It also looks great, it matches all my appliances with the stainless steel. If you don't want the look, save $20 and get the all black unit, same thing as this one. If you like to keep the coffee warm one even comes with a thermos and not the transparent carafe. The unit is light and easy to use. If you want, you can even add a filter for the water. I don't use it but I imagine it must help a little if the water does not taste good where you live.

I have just about given up coffee so I am going to try a coffee substitute next week, works just like coffee, but I want to see if it works just the same in the machine.

What our customer's say!

"Krups Coffeemaker", Very good product.Without any doubt the best coffemaker I've ever owned. I especially like the ability to make a few cups at a time with no loss of coffee quality. Well worth the money and will buy the same again.

"Good Coffee From A Poorly Made Machine", The FME4-14 brews a nice cup of coffee, as should be the case from any coffee machine backed by Krups' reputation. That's about all the compliment this machine can be given.

Problems:
The "attached" lid makes cleaning the carafe an awkward affair. It is ostensibly detachable, but the hinge feels far too flimsy to survive multiple removals.

The "auto stop" plunger on the filter holder barely works. I've spilled many cups of coffee when removing the carafe before brewing is complete.

By default, the device beeps whenever brewing is complete. Make it stop.

The whole apparatus for inserting/removing the charcoal filter is flimsy. I broke it during initial setup of the machine -- and I was being as gentle as humanly possible.

Save your money. Krups has made exceptional machines in the past, and I trust they will again one day. In the meantime, look to the competition if you need a new coffee maker anytime soon.

"Nothing like the smell of plastic with your coffee...", I bought this model at Bed Bath & Beyond and returned it about 2 or 3 weeks later (they have an excellent return policy, by the way). There are two huge problems with this machine, as some other reviewers have pointed out. One, it reeks of plastic while it's brewing, and that smell filters into the taste of the coffee as well - and two, for being 1100 watts, the just-brewed coffee is definitely not hot enough. Some other problems: the latch for the swing-out filter housing is oddly placed, the removable filter holder doesn't seem to fit correctly, and the some of the digital "features" are more of a hindrance. Oh, no gold-tone filter is included, and not even a coffee scoop (standard items they used to include).

I don't know who took over the Krups company, but I want the real one back - they used to make great machines. I could have bought a cheap $12 machine from the knick-knacks aisle at CVS and been happier.

"Slick looking, good brew, decent price, just a couple of quirks.", So after shopping the under $70 coffee machines I took the plunge on this Krups as it was on sale locally and I was able to find the style that matches my kitchen. I bought the one that was black and stainless.

I too read all the reviews here, but it seems just about every coffee maker has a slew of negative feedback. One of the main reasons I bought this unit is because there's no plastic rim around the top of the carafe! Almost all the coffee makers on the market have the dreaded plastic rim around the top of the carafe. Manufacturers really should of tested that idea! Sure it adds strength, but water and coffee grounds get trapped in it when washing, and its very very annoying! Glad this one doesn't have that design flaw. Some have said the carafe feels too thin and cheap. Well, aren't they all? We've broken a few in our days and no matter the thickness of the glass, they will break with simple tip over. It just comes with the territory, if you don't want that happening you better buy a thermal carafe not made of glass!

The annoying things about the Krups:
It didn't say anything on the box about coffee filters. The unit does come with a few #4 paper cones, but no reusable one. The Krups reusable filters do not fit it! I bought a nice universal reusable filter at Linens N Things that fits snug. So best to go that route. Krups reasoning for paper filters is for stronger flavor saturation, which makes sense, but I still prefer a reusable fine meshed filter. I wish the water reservoir was removable, but very few coffee machines have that feature, and the ones that do are just cheap for the under $70 price range. The machine itself does smell like plastic, but a few pre water runs and you can't taste it. Even on the first use I couldn't taste any plastic in my coffee. I can still smell it on the machine itself when warm, but not in the coffee. As with most coffee makers I'm guessing the machine will stop smelling like plastic with a few more uses. I wish the LED screen stayed lit all the time. I like the dark blue screen which lights up during programming and while the machine is in use, but oh well... save some energy!

What's been good with the Krups:
Nice looking, easy to use, no stupid plastic ring around the top of the carafe, accurate water level, cone filter versus flat (better saturation), and of course... makes a nice strong hot pot of coffee! It's also nice that you can push the AC cord into the machine keeping your counter space neat and tidy.

I have had no issues with the door swinging open while pulling out the carafe as one review had, even during brewing. Water filter is easy to use, just rinse under cold water for a couple of minutes to prime. I probably won't replace the filter after it expires, and the machine runs fine without it. We use filtered water anyways. I have not burned myself pouring a cup of coffee... seriously, if you burn yourself you can't blame it on the carafe! There is plastic between the handle and the glass to protect your knuckles.

So far the machine has worked flawlessly and I have no "real" complaints. It does what it should and it does a good job. Should that change, I'll update this review. Happy brewing! :)

"Great Coffeemaker!", I really like this coffeemaker. It makes great coffee very quickly. And, it has many adjustable features. It is well worth its price.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Out-of-box failure", This was to be my first Krups "programmable" coffee maker. It was supposed to replace my old Krups unit which had lasted for many years. What a disappointment -- it was impossible to set the clock!(a necessary requirement) The specific PROBLEM: the HR and MIN buttons responded erratically and the proper time setting could not be achieved. Don't ask how much time I wasted before giving up. So I recognized a lemon and made my first-ever return to Amazon. HAPPY ENDING: the return procedure was very easy, Amazon paid for everything (even the shipping) and I got all my money back.

"burned my hands and made a mess!!", I am not a patient person when waiting for my morning cup.... so when my less than 12 hour old, 1st time used KRUPS fme4 filter door swung open when removing my 1st cup (after 5 cups had brewed). The full to the top filter swung around and splashed all over me. from what i can tell, while brewing, the filter cup gains about 1/2 pound and the cheap door cannot support the weight. therefore.. while removing the pot to use the pause feature, the filter pushes down on the pot lid and opens while removing the pot.. Also, the decanter design is poor. you must pour slowly so it doesnt run down the side of the pot and make a mess. Time to buy a BUNN!!!!
I would not recommend this particular model AT ALL!!!!!!!!

"Okay but many little issues", I like to program my coffee maker. That is my number one criteria because I want it waiting for me when I wake up.

My gripes with this one are small but many:
1. The programming is not self-explanatory and you have to use the manual. Petty, but why can't I just have clock and timer options?
2. The carafe leaks when pouring. Just drips on the counter.
3. The basket doesn't stay closed. This is a brand new unit and twice the basket has popped open during brewing.
4. The rubber feet pop out. I drag my unit forward to fill it since it sits on the counter with cabinets above it. And half the time, the litter rubber feet pop out.

The coffee is good. And one thing this unit does is brew it hot and keep it hot. But I am about to toss it after three weeks and buy something else.

"Not So Hot", I bought this unit to replace my 14-year-old Krups (the best coffeemaker I've ever owned), hoping for the same quality and simplicity of design.

This unit failed to meet that expectation so egregiously that I can't recommend it to anyone.

It's quite bulky, and unless your cabinets are at an unusual height it won't fit underneath.

Major problems: cheap plastic latch to open basket door--requiring two hands to open; bubbles/air pockets every time in water level tube--rendering it useless; poorly designed spout on carafe causing coffee to spill all over floor and counter--unless poured very slowly in a thin stream (not who I am in the morning); basket, once lifted out, has no support to rest by itself on the counter--not helpful.

While the electronics options are nice, they're not enough to offset the overall drag of making coffee with this machine.

While it's less than a year old, we're getting rid of it.

How did Krups go so wrong?

"Better than the the Black & Decker we had", I bought this coffeemaker on clearance at a local store and am somewhat happy with it considering the price that I paid (dirt cheap). It pours a cup of coffee nicely and doesn't spill all over the place like the last (God awful) coffeemaker we had. I thought that this one was attractive too, but I've had it for less than 6 months and the silver color has flaked off of the buttons and water reservior cover broke off. It works fine, but is cheaply made.
