"Good coffee, kind of a hassle and expensive"
Makes good coffee, but I think I could make something for much less that works just as well. The filter included clogs very easily. It takes 1 pound of coffee to make 1 decanter and I still mix it about 50/50.
The coffee is much smoother and lower in acidity, but I think some people will miss the bitterness and acid that is usually assocaited with coffee.

"Great coffee!"
This unit cold-brews a non-acidic cup of coffee that one can tailor to their own strength by dilution. Several folks I know have returned to coffee drinking after not being able to drink drip-brewed or French press coffee. Get interested in coffee again as a "sweet" beverage with this device.

"Not what it was cracked up to be"
Takes some doing to make this stuff and the filter always gets clogged and its a bear to clean when its half full of coffee grouds and water. My wife and I didn't think it did justice to what we were looking for. Went to a Espresso maker and we add hot water and it seems to do about as well acidity wise but tastes lots better and its easier to make and less wasteful.

"Toddy Cold Brew Coffee System"
Definitely makes a good cup of coffee, however, the process is labor intensive and certainly not for those who have any issues with delayed gratification. The clean-up is a bit of a hassle, and it is far from economical. More of a novelty than a practical buy. Thankfully, it is not an expensive purchase.

"Best coffee ever..."
...I'm serious--this is the best coffee ever. After having Toddy exclusively for the last couple of months, I brewed a pot of regular coffee the other day and it tasted terrible to me. Here's the only problem--I ALWAYS brew less coffee than it says to (the directions say to brew a pound of coffee with 9 cups of water, and I always brew 12 oz of coffee with 6 3/4 cups of water). When I do the whole pound of coffee, the container is practically overflowing and the filter keeps getting blocked when I try to drain it. When I do 12 oz of coffee, it works perfectly. So, even though getting used to the brewing process is a little tricky, the coffee it makes is awesome--SO smooth tasting--and it makes great iced mochas.

What our customer's say!

"Don't Buy It!", Product is way overpriced for what it produces. The coffee is tasteless no matter what kind, roast, price I use in it - instant coffee actually tastes better. I've tried following the instructions exactly and ad libbing as some of the other reviewers have done - to no avail. It's being donated to Goodwill.

"$30 for this! It should cost $5 and even then it's not worth it!", I have been making iced coffee the cold brew way for a few months with two jars and a strainer. Since I consume so much, I thought I would give the famed Toddy system a try - surely so many people couldn't be wrong. Boy, am I sorely disappointed! I open the package and all you get is a cheap plastic pitcher and a glass carafe. $30 for this is way overpriced! Even so, the price would be fine if it did anything different or better than my makeshift system but it is actually worse, way worse!!! Here are my reasons:

1) The cheap plastic brew container has NO COVER and a FLIMSY STAND. I am going to leave an open, wobbly container full of coffee concentrate on my countertop for 12 hours, does this sound like a good idea? Does it sound sanitary? Unless your house is like a museum, probably not. By contrast my $2 jars have lids - imagine that.

2) The filters are so sensitive you cannot stir the grounds and water together to fully soak the grounds. What genius designed this filter? They expect you to go through a delicate dance where you add a few ground, slowly pour the water in a circular pattern, add some more grounds, slowly add some more water, etc. All so the filter doesn't CLOG. Who has time for this!? By contrast, when I put water and coffee grounds into my $2 jar, I drop it in and stir with a spoon - imagine that! My $1 strainer removes all the grounds/residue and leaves me with pure concentrate.

3) You have to keep buying their filers and they aren't cheap! Nowhere had I seen that you had to keep buying their filters - they cost $2 each and you can only use them 10 times! Why wouldn't I just keep using my $1 strainer, which works just fine and will last forever!?

4) Their filters require a lot of care. Every time you use them you have to go through some ridiculous process of storing them in a zip lock bag in the fridge. Again, who the heck has time for this?! My $1 strainer takes 5 seconds to rinse and then I stick it on the drying rack - imagine that!

All in all I am very disappointed with the Toddy system. Not only is it way overpriced, but it is worse than a $5 makeshift alternative.

DISCLOSURE: I have a burr coffee grinder that can evenly grind beans so that probably makes it easier to use a $1 strainer. But if you love coffee so much, why the heck would you still be using a blade grinder? At very least you should buy your coffee pre-ground, you would get better cold brewed coffee no matter how you did it.

I hope this helps people to see the light about this product.

"Evangelizing for Cold Brew", I love my Toddy! I've been using it for three weeks. I've had iced coffee every day, and I've only made coffee twice! No more $2.50 Dunkin Donuts cups (where they never give me enough skim milk). I do miss my coffee cart guy, but some relationships have to die for others to grow, you know? I get my coffee before I leave the house, which makes me happy. We have a dearth of outlets in my apartment, so I wouldn't want an automatic drip maker anyway, even if it wasn't for the heat and the icky taste of cold coffee that's been hot brewed.

The Toddy is so easy to use. I'm really confused by the people who can't figure it out. Takes about 10 minutes to get it set up, then about 40 minutes to drain the next morning. And then you have two weeks worth of coffee! (Or one week for big coffee drinkers.) I just have one 12 oz cup of iced every morning. No longer do I have to send the hubby out on weekend mornings when we'd both rather laze around in our pajamas. I am in iced coffee heaven. And I just get Dunkin hazelnut for $9 a pound and I'm set. In the grocery store, a 12 oz bag of Folgers hazelnut is only $5, and it's just as good. But I like using the pound better, as you make coffee less often.

To break it down, I had 20 cups of coffee out of a $9 bag of grounds. Milk cost me about $3 overall. That's $12. If I had bought this coffee at DD, it would have been about $40 (for the 12 oz), and it would have been $25 from the coffee cart. Since I usually did half and half, that's $32.50, making my overall savings $20.50 over two weeks. So, by the end of next week, my Toddy will have paid for itself.

Oh, and my stomach also reacts much more kindly to this coffee. No more finishing off a cup and bolting to the ladies room. It also tastes much smoother than other coffees. I can't stand the burnt, acidic taste of Starbucks. But that could taste the same in a Toddy; it may just be the beans. I won't be testing it.

If you like iced coffee, this is a great product. I can't be bothered to buy cheesecloth and set up my own at-home system. If you hate DIY, this is a great product. If you are drinking hot and already have a drip coffee maker, and don't get a grumbly tummy from your coffee, this may not be for you. You might spend more on coffee. If this concerns you, stick to your coffee maker. But I'm saving money and having happy coffee moments in the morning, so it works for me!

"Toddy", This coffee maker is great! I have no complaints. I tried to use a makeshift toddy system and once I gave up and bought this coffee maker I fell in love with the simplicity of it. I would recommend this to anyone who loves cold brew coffee. I usually buy coffee beans from my local coffee store and mix half a lb. with 8 cups of water and it works perfect! they sell replacement filters but the two that come with the system hold up really well and I cannot see myself buying more for a while. The decantor comes with a nice air tight top and the whole thing takes up about a milk cartons worth of space in the fridge. hope this helps

"I love the Toddy!", I have been cold brewing coffee for a year or so, and the filtering is such a hassle. The Toddy makes the process so much easier. It's very easy to use and clean.

I read the reviews here, and was concerned about the filter clogging. Taking various reviewers' advice, I used 2 1/4 C water, then 1 1/2 C coffee, then 2 1/4 C water, then 1 1/2 C coffee, then 2 1/2 C water, (7 C water and 3 C coffee total), and the filter had no clogging issues at all. The coffee just poured out and was done inside 5 minutes. So much easier than what I had been doing before.

And the coffee is superb. Big thumbs up from me!

"Taste is average - not worth the money", Bought the thing based on reviews here and in major news outlets

Bought the freshest bag of Starbucks beans I could find (expiration date on back) and followed the instructions. No problems in making it, but it tastes only so-so. A just made cup at Starbucks is better and so is french press.

I will try another kind of coffee, but so far I am pretty dissapointed!

"Complicated process at first, but don't let it scare you away...", The first couple times I made the coffee, I was worried about screwing it up because the instructions are not 100% clear, and they are kind of tedious. However, the coffee extract is perfect for iced coffee. I add vanilla soy milk, and it's heavenly. The problem with attempting to make hot coffee out of it is that you won't be able to get it hot enough just by adding boiling water (You might be able to microwave it though, as I don't have one).

"Works as promised but is that a good thing?", The toddy works as stated and yes it does brew a mild less acidic coffee. However it was too mild for my taste, the coffee had flavor, but I found I missed the acidity. I used premium dark roast beans(french roast - dark roast) and the coffee just did not have the bite I like in a brew.
For people who have trouble with the acidity this product may be just what the doctor ordered but I am going back to my french press.

"Works perfectly!", My wife loves her coffee, but gets bad acid reflux. Firstly, the system does work, it is much less acidic and is rather easy to brew and prepare a hot cup. My wife also enjoys cold coffee and since it's already refridgerated, no sweat!

I would reccomend that when brewing, don't follow them quite to the "t" and do as another reviewer suggests and spread the water out more evenly, namely 3 cups, 3 cups and end with 3 cups.

My wife no longer has heartburn, and the coffee tastes smoother, naturally more sweet, and is really easy to make if you are on the go (or need a quick cup in the morning to wake up)!

I'm glad I found this, one of the best spending of funds in recent history!
