Others say...
"Good for one year only" I had this vaccum last year and at first I was very happy how it operated perfectly out of the box. I had planned on using this every 3 months to keep my carpets clean. At about a year after purchasing it it just stopped working. At first it just kept on dispensing hot water without control. I stopped and checked if I had the water tank improperly attached but it isnt. A week later I tried it again and it stopped dispensing water all together. I dont know if I just got a bad one but I suggest getting something else other than this vaccuum. "Hoover steamvac duo a great dirt extractor" I just bought this item refurbished from Big Lots for only $80.00! I figured I had not much to lose and they gave a 30 day return policy too. I am surprised how great a job on my carpets this dirt extractor did. Certain spots of my carpeting, like where the dining area carpet meets the kitchen tile are really trashed, and had'nt been cleaned in several years(professionally), and this little extractor really brought the carpet back to life. I used near boiling water(the hotter the better) with the Hoover cleaning solution and a tablespoon of borax(a cheap anti-allergen, to help kill dust mites). The waste water was black of course. Then I rinsed it with clear, nearly boiling water (in the cleaning solution resevoir). The carpet totally blends with the better parts of the rest of the carpeted room now. I know other reviews say 'this and that' about its design or performance being a hindrance, but hey, I think it did better than the professional carpet cleaners mostly because it has a rotating brush. Also, I've never seen the professionals get down and scrub a deep spot, they usually just spray it with spot remover and charge you extra(but the spot is still there). One really needs to scrub some stubborn spots with a brush or sponge no matter how the carpet is being cleaned. Size of the extractor is great. It manuevers well! I have a townhouse so my space is a premium and the areas are tight. Its compact so it stores easily too. You could spend alot more money for a bigger, bulkier gadget, but this extractor worked fine. Like most other extractors for home use, you have to stop and empty the waste resevoir and refill the cleaning solution tank, this is true here too. Is it a hindrance? well, I think its easier than hooking hoses up to one's faucets like my old dirt extractor needed(I had to take apart my kitchen faucet!). I didn't spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on it, and I don't intend to use it all day everyday like a professional, so for home use its perfect. You can't beat if for the money. Hindsite, I wouldn't labor over whether to buy an extractor or not, its the best $80 I've spent in a long time. "It works for me" Flimsy construction, but it does the job. I used to have a Little Green machine, but the suction was bad and you are on your hands and knees to use it. This model is used upright like a vacume cleaner, but folds down small for storage. The solution and discharge tanks are easy to clean and insert easily into place. There is only one strange feature - sometimes the rotating brushes in the base don't work. I have found that this unit is very particular about being turned on in a specific sequence. Handle up - turn on power - foot pedal to recline the handle. If you recline the handle before turning on the power, the brushes won't spin. "Good little machine, could be better." Overall I am satisfied with this steam cleaner. My house has mostly hardwood floors. I use it for my carpeted stairs and hallway, area rugs, furniture and car upholstery. I shopped around and considered getting a larger model, but I came to the conclusion that I didn't need some big bulky machine, or the big price that came with it. I decided to go with the smaller machine instead. When it arrived and I took it out of the box, I was surprised at how small it really is. Once I got over how cool it looked, I filled it up with cleaning solution and tried it out. It worked great on all my area rugs and the carpet. It picked up way more dirt than I expected. It actually kind of grossed me out, I didn't think my rugs were that dirty. The only thing I didn't care for was that it seemed to leave everything a little too wet. Next, I tried it out on the couch and chaise lounge. The motorized hand tool didn't seem to work as well as the manual one, maybe it was just due to the fact that I have microfiber furniture. The hose can be quite cumbersome, as it doesn't stretch very far, (maybe they make an extension, I haven't checked into it) I found myself lifting the entire unit onto the furniture to reach the back. I am very happy with this machine. I have used it many times, and it is holding up just fine. I love that the handle folds down and it fits in a very small space. It is perfect for my house and I believe it would be great for an apartment also. If you don't need one of those huge cleaners, don't waste your money. This one will get the job done just as well, for less than half the price! "A good investment, for certain purposes" I got my Hoover F5520 SteamVac Duo about 6 months ago and have used it several times. Out of the package, I had it going in a few minutes with just a glance at the instruction sheet. The operation is very straightforward, and I haven't had any problems with either the clean water reservoir or the dirty water reservoir leaking or being difficult to handle. It also cleans really well - I did my entire dining room (the reason I bought the thing in the first place) the first day, and the difference in the carpet's appearance was striking. It works great on new spills, and I found the two cleaning solutions included to be very useful. Overall, I only have 3 cautionary comments about the F5520: First, it has a very narrow face, only 8 or 9 inches wide. This means it takes a lot of passes to do a whole room, although it's okay on a small spill. Second, it is Really Loud, much louder than my regular vacuum; my ears ring after using it, so that means I don't use it as much as I might otherwise. Third, I find that when pushing it from place to place, my hand depresses the water squirter (on the underside of the handle), so that I have to go back and suck up all the water between the spots I was cleaning. This happens even with the vacuum unplugged. In general, I would recommend the Hoover for an apartment or home where spills are small, and for occasionally doing one room at a time for overall wear. It's a good quality product for a great price, and very easy to use.

Hoover F5520 SteamVac Duo Vacuum
Why I buy this one ? - Combination portable/upright vacuum cleaner; converts in 1 step - Fold handle down to clean stairs or upholstery; flip it up to vacuum an entire room - Powerful carpet agitation with heated cleaning; 120-volt, 60 Hz engine; 4 rows of brushes - Has 5-foot stretch hose with turbine-powered suction; comes with 16 ounces of detergent and 8 ounces of stain remover - Narrow 9-inch width easily fits on a step; easy to carry and store What our customer's say! "Nice cleaner for size", For the size of this steamer it has alot of cleaning power. Have not had any problems with leaking. The width could be a little larger but if you have small jobs and pets that always seem to leave a bit something it will do the job. We have very little wall to wall carpeting. If you do then you may want to purchase a steamer that has a wider path of cleaning. "Piece of junk", I got this vacuum as a wedding gift. I used it a couple times on my burber carpet and thought it did an ok job. The water it picked up was dirty so I figured it was doing something. As for spot cleaning with the attachments... it didn't do a darn thing. After a couple of cleanings I dont' think the vaccuum works well at all. I'm about to throw it in the dumpster to be honest. "Little cleaner works like a pro -- but only for small jobs", I got this Hoover SteamVac to spot-clean pet stains and lift dirt from high traffic areas-- it works very well for that purpose. It is a small unit, and with a cleaning path less than a foot wide, not designed for large spaces. Add in relatively small tanks and a very loud motor, and it's not a great choice for doing large areas. For small areas it works very well. For extended use, it's loud enough that I'd recommend using earplugs. The parts (tanks/etc) fit well together, although it's sometimes hard to get the water-tank snapped into place. The unit comes assembled. Note that the SteamVac Duo is not an actual steam cleaner -- it does NOT heat up the water itself, you fill it with hot water at time of use. Most of the complaints here I think derive from that misunderstanding or not following directions. The unit works best if you first dry vacuum the area, pre-treat the stain, let it sit, and then wet vacuum it with the steamvac. We found that the Hoover carpet detergent included in the package works well, and has a mild odor the dissipates quickly. The spot cleaner also included in the package works fine for pre-treating, but we usually use a natural Seventh Generation carpet cleaner for that purpose (less solvents in the air and works just as well). You should be able to use other brands of detergent besides Hoover although I haven't tried it yet. Recommended! "PLEASE RECONSIDER!", This machine does not work! It will spray water on carpets and furnishings with its "pump-action" spray - which may cause a hand cramp from constant pumping over soiled areas larger than 2' x 3'. The machine does wet the carpet, but there is no removal of water. The collection reservoir doesn't work at all, nor does the vacuum/water removal action on the hand tool. I used this product on slightly soiled carpet which was not ruined. After using this product, my carpet was ruined - I do not recommend it to other consumers. Although it seems to be a great concept at a great price, something's fallen very short. Please don't ruin your carpets with this machine like I did! "Great for the money!", Pros: This little cleaner does a terrific job for the money. I was amazed at the dirt it pulled out. Once you pull out excess water, it dries within a few hours. My carpets felt so much fresher & looked newer. Versatile with tools so can be used for a number of different applications. Cons: Is described as a "Steam" Vac. I was disappointed to learn that the machine does not actually heat the water. You must put in hot tap water & use before water goes cold. Also, you must go over the area several times with the "vacuum" function to remove excess water for quicker drying time. Cleaning solutions that came with the machine did not work nearly as well as I would have liked. I ended up at Home Depot purchasing a different brand of cleaner which worked incredibly well. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Love the DUO", This steamvac is so easy to use and it performs very well. My carpets are clean and they dried fast. The steamvac is light weight but built well. It held up for two long flights of stairs and all the carpeting, and is stored in a place that is easy to reach for spot cleaning. I had bought a larger Hoover a couple of years ago and returned it. It was too awkward and not as well built as this one. I do have a combo of hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, and wall-to-wall carpeting. If the entire home were carpeted, I would opt for professional cleaning since this smaller unit would take too much time (in terms of width of cleaning path and frequent refills). For my use, it fits the bill. "Be Careful - It's not your Mother's Hoover", Just a warning for all of you about Hoover. I ordered the steam vac for as a gift. I wish I could tell you how the steam vac works but after removing it from the box and reading the manual this steam vac does not work - it's defective. Per my phone call and email to Hoover they will not replace their defective steam vac. The consumer must find a certifed Hoover service center then take time off of work (loss of pay), drive to the service center (money for gas)to have the service center see what is wrong with the steam vac. This was not part of the image of Hoover I had nor what I bargained for so just as they say "buyer beware" "AWESOME MACHINE", Bought this item without doing any research & I was a lucky gal! This machine is awesome. I pulled it out of the box, poured the cleaner and water in the tank, and started cleaning. In an hour's time I've steam cleaned approx. 900 sq. feet. The fold down feature and cool sleek design will make it easy to store. I can't wait to do the stairs, the car and the furniture. I know this machine can do it all, after the results I've seen on our two year old beige carpet. It looks brand new and with a 3 year old and many little house guests over the last two years coming and going, that is saying something! I think this product is the way to go!!!!!!!!! "CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!!", So far, I am extremely happy with my SteamVac Duo. I cleaned two rooms, following the directions closely, and not only did the stains come out, but the heat from the SteamVac dried the carpet quickly. Just remember to snap the two tanks (solution and receiving) into place---I first noticed this when I started my cleaning, I noticed there was no dirty water coming into the receiving tank. I appreciate the telescope handle, making this SteamVac fold into a compact size, as I am a paraplegic (paralyzed from the waist down) and my coordination is not what it used to be. "Steam Vac Duo a dissappointment ", I previously wrote a glowing report on this machine, but now the honeymoon is over. I used the machine exactly twice, it is less than a year old and never tried the hand wand. Guess what it doesnt work at all and Im not the first person this happened to. the water goes from one tank to another and thats it. There are 6 other people on hsn (where they are selling the machine for 99.00) who experienced the same problem. AFter being mislead by hoover to a service center some 20 miles away (one way) that no longer exists, and driving another 20 miles in a different direction to a new service center, Im told that replacement is not an option and parts are not avail and will be weeks before unit is fixed. This is totally unacceptable. Im wondering if this is an inherent problem with this machine? Im totally dissappointed and inconvenienced and wouldnt buy it again. so there...8:( ![]() |
