Others say...

"Not Bad, Not Great"
This knife set is O.K. For the price I would say it is a fair value. I have had it for about a month and one of the knives is already starting to rust. I have never put them in the dishwasher, and recommend that you don't. They are very sharp and feel nice. They also look nice in the block. Not a bad set, but don't expect to be blown away.

"RUST!!!! (and lots of it)"
One washing set the rust in motion. Consumer reports dropped the ball on this one. They claim stainless steel, yet a magnet clings to these knives like they were pure iron ore! Garbage, unless immediatly after use, u wash, dry, and oil them. I'll pass, and return them in a hurry.

"Despite packaging claim, set is NOT dishwasher safe"
I am writing this review to affirm and expand upon the earlier review posted by NJOY. These knives, if cleaned in a dishwasher, will indeed rust immediately.

I purchased this set in May 2007 as a gift for my wife. Both of us lead busy lives and were happy to come across this set, which was strongly recommended by Consumer Reports and had packaging touting the knives as "dishwasher safe." We sadly found the packaging claim to be a baseless marketing ploy, and have lost faith in Consumer Reports for not exposing this obvious flaw.

A complaint to Chicago Cutlery yielded a response saying the knives "are made of high carbon stainless steel which unfortunately does rust" and that "to avoid rust, the blades have to be kept well oiled." It should be noted that there are no such disclaimers or instructions in the set's included Care Guide. Also, despite the company's Lifetime Guarantee promising that "any piece found to be defective will be repaired or replaced at no charge," the company only offered to send some oil to help in rust removal.

I strongly advise against purchasing this product or any Chicago Cutlery items. Instead, find a manufacturer who stands behind their product and engages in honest marketing.

"chicago cutlery, metro 10-piece set"
I would have expected to pay much more for this quality. A great cutlery set for any kitchen.

"Great bang for your buck."
This knife set is a great value. The knives just feel right in your hands. There is a very nice balance between the handle and blade. One doesn't feel heavier than the other. In fact the knives in general do not feel too heavy or light. The handle gives you a comfortable and non-slip grip. I've had these knives for a while now and they are as sharp as the day I bought them. But I am not an everyday cook so I can't give an accurate account of how often they need to be sharpened. Only drawback is that the bread knife is sold separately and does not fit in block.

What our customer's say!

"Chicago Cutlery", Selected product based on a review by Consumer's Reports. I'm very pleased with the item especially considering the low price from the vendor. It's great to have sharp knives in the house even if I'm not Dexter.

"Sharp, cheap, but not pretty", None of your snobbish friends are going to be impressed with this knife set, but I have to say, these things will cut stuff up. I agree with other reviewers that this is one of those "best buy" type of products. They're nto fancy, they don't have the "right" brand, and frankly the blades look kind of skinny and wimpy, but the performance of these knives is just great. I have not owned them long enough to know how long they will hold an edge, or what kind of trouble it will be to keep them sharp, but my first impression is that at this price, this is a very, very good, utilitarian set of blades for the kitchen. This is the first set of "stamped" (skinny) knives I've used, and I can tell you that the whole argument that a quality knife has to have a lot of "heft" may very well be advertising hype.

"Buyer Beware, NOT the real deal!!!!", Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 10-Piece Block Set

I own a couple of piece of Metropolitan Chicago Cutlery that I enjoy using, so I ordered this set for myself and one as a gift. The knives that arrived were not of the quality I expected, nor of the quality pictured in the brochure included in the packaging. They were too light, and the handles were just stuck on, not incorporated into the blade like the Metropolitan pieces I already own. I sent the first set back for a replacement and got the same poor quality bogus knives back again, so I just returned them for a refund. Amazon made the return painless, but I would have liked to have gotten the knives that were advertised, rather than a cheap imitation. Be Careful!

"These knives are a very good value.", For the price you would be very hard pressed to find a better set of knives than these. They are not the highest quality, but the price is right and they will do the job.

Regarding the CR rating and dishwashing: Don't put your knives in the dishwasher. It doesn't matter what the box says. CR even says this in their article. It's not that difficult to wipe your knives down and dry them immediately after use. Just get into the habit.

"Good knife set, just a few caveats", I have been using these knives for several months, and I enjoy using them. Just be aware that they are NOT made of stainless steel, as is almost every knife in the world is made of today. For some reason, the immediate universe of knife manufacturing, decided to switch over to stainless steel. I don't like stainless steel. It doesn't seem to hold an edge as long as carbon steel and stainless takes a bit more effort to sharpen. Just my humble opinion. Carbon steel does rust, but I wash all of these knives by hand and immediately wipe them dry. No problem. I never need to oil.

I am not a big fan of machine washing any knife. It is tough to seat them in the racks so they will not rub against something and the amount of heat used to dry does a number on the hardware holding the handles on.

My only gripe is that the blades are fairly thin and don't have a lot of heft to them. Otherwise, they work well. Good but not exceptional.

Hope that helps.

"Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 10-Piece Block Set", Excellent set of knifes for the price. These should last a long time.

"Great Product Review..", Gave this product as a Christmas present, receiver was very pleased with it ,I was very satisfied with the shipping procedure and the pricing of the product and shipping cost. THANKS ASH in IOWA.

"Rusted Immediately!", I was given this set as a house warming present and not even a month after I had it, it started to RUST. I have tried to send the company an email and there website keeps saying that there is a "send error". I liked the set alot and it cut very well however I can not use it anymore because of the rust. I would not recommend this product.

"Nice set", Prior to buying this set, I had your run-of-the-mill basic knives. I didn't known what I was missing out on. These are really nice and sharp and I use the chef's knife the most (how did I live without that?). I have never used the expensive sets, so I don't have that for comparison, but I think this is a good quality set of knives.

"Chicago is Sharp!", This is the best deal for your money. The knives are probably one of the few economical knives out there that are always very SHARP. Their lightweight construction makes them easy to use. Make sure you wipe dry the knives each and every tome you wash them by hand (Never put them in the dishwasher!) good bang for you buck!
