"Best Battery Vac ever"
Very powerful, easy to use, and inexpensive. Some reviewers have said that this unit is loud. It is no louder than a regular shop vac. Perhaps it is a little higher pitched, which makes it more annoying than a regular vac. Great suction power (don't expect the same power as a corded unit). I use it regularly to cleanup after my jobs (I am a service plumber). So it works great on wet and dry pickup. The detachable hose is very nice for getting into tight spots. You are not going to find a better vac with all the features of this one. The price is unbeatable.

"Works great on dusty jobs"
This was purchased for my husband last year. I've been using it for vacuuming up thick dust in my chicken coop. It works great at picking up dust, wood chips and anything really small. It's also light and easy to carry. The battery life is fairly good, as well. I also liked that the container was easy to take on and off.

The few things I don't care for about this vacuum? The small size of the holding area for one. It's so small that if you have a large project you'll have to dump out the dust quite a bit. Yes, it's very noisy as well. It's for picking up small things only, I wish it would pick up more than dust, but it's mainly a dust vac.

Overall, a good deal. I'd purchase again.

"works great, BUT IT"S WAY TOO FREAKING LOUD!"
I needed a portable vacuum that could handle water. The boat tends to collect water in a few places. It's very inconvenient to lug the whole ShopVac to the boat. So I picked up one of these for the job.

I've read some of the other reviews and share their opinion about HOW UNBELIEVABLY LOUD THIS DANG THING CAN BE. Yes, you practically have to use ALL CAPS to SHOUT over the noise this thing makes, even when posting to the web. Heh.

It does a fine job as a vacuum. Both wet and dry. I rate it three out of five because of the noise.

But for the price here it's relatively cheap since it comes with the battery and charger. I can use (and have used) the battery in my other DeWalt 18v cordless devices. That and since it comes with the charger too I now have a spare charger left at the boat.

It's good for what it does but some may find it TOO LOUD to use without ear protection. Which is always something worth using when dealing with machines anyway.

"Incredibly noisy"
The noise is very high pitched and practically made my family's ears bleed. Ear protection mandatory when using this product.

"Fantastic Deal!"
At $99, this is the least expensive way to buy an 18V XR battery and a charger. The fact that it comes with a free vacuum is a great plus!

The noise level is caused by the fact that there is no baffling between the fan and the outlet vents. In a vacuum this small, there just isn't room for any. The tiny capacity means it wasn't really designed to be used for long periods anyway. The larger DeWalt DC500 Cordless/Corded Wet/Dry Vaccuum is quieter. The DC500 doesn't include a battery, and buying this vacuum is the best way to get one for it!

What our customer's say!

"High Quality Hand-Held Vac", I purchased the DeWalt vac to replace an older Dustbuster. The power of the DeWalt is considerably better. The hose function works well and is great for corners and tight areas. Many reviews raise concern about noise. Here is a comparison measured at 36 inches:

DeWalt cordless vac 87-90 dB
Black and Decker Dustbuster 80-82 dB
Porter Cable wet/dry shop vac 87 dB
Dirt Devil 84 dB
Simplicity home floor vacuum 80 dB

Hearing damage occurs at 90dB over time. Ear muffs for hearing protections store nicely on the handle of the DeWalt and, I believe, should be used. I do not find this to be particularly inconvenient. I own other DeWalt tools and have found them to be consistently high quality. This one is no exception.

"Good, but not exceptional", Because it was a DeWalt, and rather pricey, I bought this unit expecting it to basically be a hand-held Shop-Vac, which is not quite the case. I suspect that my expectations were too high. It will easily lift all kinds of wood and metal chips, even fairly heavy ones, off a smooth surface, but if you're trying to get a winter's worth of grit out of your car carpets, a plug-in shop-vac still does a better job....

"great little vac", It's the best little vac I've used.
I sorta get people's issue with the high pitch noise, but to me , it isn't loud...my bigger shop vacs are FAR louder.
But your 3 x the distance from them, so I guess it just seems louder to others.. I don't find a problem with the noise.

PROS....
Easy to get the trash tray off and dump it.
Uses a REAL filter... the type that works best and more efficiently on full size shop vacs.
Picks up all sorts of stuff easily.
I have other 18v dewalt tools, so a no brainer addition for me.
But my wife loves it for spot clean ups in the kitchen and bathrooms.

CONS:
I wish the charger had provisions for wall mounting as well as some sort of wall mount for the vac.. that would make it soo much easier for general use around the house.

"Spot on", I have been using the vac for 2 years now. It performs on a daily basis for up to 20 people 7 days a week. At work we have almost every 18 volt cordless tool DeWalt puts out. I have been so impressed I bought the 9-tool bags a couple months back for my personal use. Anything that can last so long with the crew I am on has to be tough! And the performance of each tool has always been up to par with any of our corded tools, which are falling by the wayside, collecting dust.

"DeWalt cordless vacuum", Dewalt DC515K cordless Vacuum. DEWALT DC515K Heavy Duty 1/2 Gallon 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Wet/Dry VacuumThis is a great tool. First it has much more power than a dust buster. This vac has the same power as the larger DeWalt, but much more compact. I liked it so much I took it to work, showed my boss and we bought two at work. I do maintenance work, and have it with me on my tool cart. I use it every day at least once. Amazon was $40-50 cheaper than anywhere else I could find it and it was free shipping too.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Best handheld vacuum I've ever used.", I bought this to replace a truly crappy Shark rechargeable vacuum. The DeWalt was one of four that I had decided on (the other three being the B&D PHV1800, Eureka 71A, and B&D CHV1500 in descending order of price). I ultimately chose the DeWalt because it uses a standard DeWalt power tool battery, has a washable filter, and was the only wet/dry vacuum of my selections.

The box contains the vacuum itself, rechargeable battery, fast charger (will charge a completely flat battery in about an hour), and a thin but complete owner's manual.

The DeWalt's design is all business. It's about the size of two irons or half a shoe box. The top has a very grippy rubberized handle that's set above a large (but not stiff) responsive power switch. It's very easy to turn the vacuum on and off with one hand and very difficult to do so accidentally. A plastic vacuum hose runs from the back of the unit over the top (the handle) to the vacuum nozzle on the front of the unit. You can easily pull the hose out of the nozzle to get into smaller crevices; put the hose back in and it's a normal hand vacuum. Underneath, in the back you've got a black plastic debris bin that's held in place with a beefy (but, again, not too stiff) latch. In front of that is the standard DeWalt battery pack.

Although it's one of the heavier vacuums out there, the weight is well balanced. You can easily tilt the vacuum in all directions without feeling like you're fighting the weight of the battery and/or the vacuum motor. You can vacuum vertical surfaces just as easily as horizontal ones. You CAN use the vacuum vertically if there's water in the collection bin; the bin seals tightly enough to the base that leakage isn't a problem. However, having too much water in there could make it splash into the motor assembly. So the moral is: If you've got water in the collection bin, empty it out before doing anything vertical (or hold the vacuum horizontal and use the detachable hose).

So, how well does it work? Quite well, in fact. The motor is very powerful and was able to easily pick up all manner of bits that I threw at it including drywall dust, small finishing nails, screw anchors, and cat hair from a wood floor. It also did an excellent job removing cat hair from upholstery despite its lack of a power brush or upholstery comb. In the car, it easily picked up all the sand, dirt, pebbles and occasional penny without any complaints, including bits that were embedded in a damp carpeted floor mat.

Emptying the bin is simplicity itself and takes less than five seconds to complete. The filter seems to be doing an excellent job so far; even with a bin full of drywall dust, there's no "cloud" when you turn the vacuum on again. I haven't yet needed to clean the filter but it's easily removable and is washable. (EDIT 03-24-08: I finally had to wash the filter. It lost about 70% of its suction after pulling up a buttload of spackle dust, so I removed and tapped the filter against the inside of a trash can. A HUGE cloud of dust was released. About a minute at the sink with a small stiff bristled scrub brush and the filter came clean. I let it dry overnight before reinstalling it; meanwhile I rinsed out the collection bin and cleaned up the unit itself. By morning it was back to its old self again, sucking up everything and scaring the cats.)

The battery lasts friggin' forever. Out of the box the battery had a partial charge on it that lasted about 20 minutes. After charging for about half an hour in the included charger I was able to vacuum pretty much every corner and edge in the house, plus my car, without losing any vacuum strength. A big selling point for me was that it uses standard DeWalt power tool batteries so finding replacements will be incredibly easy.

My only real issue with the vacuum is one that has been mentioned before: This vacuum is LOUD and does emit a power tool-like whine which some people can find annoying. I doubt it's any louder than my full-size vacuum cleaner but since it's held in your hand rather than being dragged on the floor, it's closer to your ears and therefore might sound louder. So far as 18v handheld vacuums I compared it against this one is about average in noise, and compared to all handheld vacuums I looked at this is definitely one of the louder ones. I therefore wouldn't consider this to be "bad design" but simply a consequence of a larger and more powerful motor. Even so, since there are other 18v handhelds out there which aren't as loud, I think DeWalt could have done a little something to quiet it down just a little more.

I also would have liked to have a transparent debris bin so that I could see how full it was. This feature exists on at least 2/3 of the handheld vacuums out there today. I recognize DeWalt's "yellow and black" design decision here probably overrode this as a possible feature.

The only other thing I would have liked to see on this vacuum is a few more accessories; namely, a shoulder strap (so you can walk around using the hose to clean things like window sills and such) and a few hose accessories like an upholstery brush or pinhole nozzle. Still, even with these minor shortcomings I'd definitely buy this one again.

"Hand Vacuum", THE BEST HAND VACUUM ON THE MARKET, BAR NONE. This unit is very powerful, and small. Fits where others don't. If you can find it, buy it.

"Great suction", I bought this item to use in my window cleaning biz since the first vac I tried was way to anemic to do much This thing is great and promises to do a great job.

"dewalt dc 515k", Great price for what you get, vacuum, battery and charger. Picked up good in car, would be nice with a better attachment on the end. I gave it as a gift but he didn't like it because doesn't hold charge long at all 15 minutes. I wouldn't recommend for someone who doesn't have an extra battery handy to change. I would recommend over the Dyson I heard that only last 5 minutes. Bottom line good if you have extra battery.

"very cool", I like this vacuum. It was a deal of the day and the battery and charger would have cost as much as the entire thing. Being a compulsive DeWalt buyer how could I refuse? I sure didn't need another charger, but you never know. It is ugly cool and really seems to work well. Loud? Yes, but the power comes at a cost. I ordered it the week before Christmas, way past the cut off for Christmas delivery on the free shipping. No big deal, it was for me and I was in no hurry. It arrived Christmas eve anyway. Outstanding.
