Others say...
"will not stay on" I purchased 2 of these heaters a couple of months ago. They worked fine for the first day and then they turned them selves off. I unpluged them, let them set for 1/2 hour and them turned them back on. Within a 24 hours, they turned them selves back off. I then set them for the lowest heat and within 24-48 hours, they turned them selves back off. I also noticed that when you plug them in, you could see sparks from the plug. The unit should not be drawing power since i had not turned the units back on with the on/off switch. During the reseting of these units, i made sure i did not touch the timer switch. I went to the Honeywell's site for further trouble suggestions but the site did not give me any more ideas than the manual. "Works well" We bought this during a cold snap when our furnace was down. It was the only model left in the store and I was leery of the controls (I worried they looked too complicated). It was actually really easy to figure out the controls, and it has worked great, as has every oil-filled radiator-style heater I have used. The oil-filled models are safer and quieter than other electric heaters. I like this one because it's nice to have the LED display of the current temperature. Otherwise, it generally operates the same as lesser-priced similar models. We've had it two months and haven't had any of the problems cited by other reviewers. "Possible solution to shutoff problems..." I started having the same problems as other people described, with sudden shutoffs, after about a year's use. On a hunch, I moved it to an open space, away from the two pieces of furniture that it was standing between, and the problem all but disappeared. I may be wrong, but the heater may have a safety sensor that shuts it off when there is a temperature gradient around it, indicating proximity to an object. (Or the heater's motherboard might have healed itself.) Addendum (4 months since my initial review): it may still occasionally shut itself off after a power-up, sometimes even two or three times in a row after a brief time of being on; but, after that, it stays on "indefinitely" - I left it on for up to 18 hours on several occasions without any problems. It is certainly annoying but only slightly in my case. "not as reliable as one would think,,,," We too have had issues with our Honeywell Oil Filled Radiator Heater as it continually shuts off for no reason in the middle of the night but also continues to blow circuits on almost every area of our house when we have it running on high... Not the best invention by a long shot as it has a lot of bugs in it. "Don't buy this one! Get the HZ-690 for $39.99 & save money!" I bought two Honeywell HZ-708's last season and now they both won't stay on. They were great the first season but I bought them thinking that they would work for more than a few months. The company said that the problem is with the "mother-boards", but it actually seems to be with the digital thermostat shutting off the unit. I sent them back to KAZ (Honeywell) and requested they send me two replacements that did not have this problem. They sent me two HZ-690's. Now, these units do not have a digital thermostat nor do they have a timer. I liked both these features in the HZ-708/710 but the company obviously knows they don't work well and sent me the HZ-690's as replacements (without compensating me for the difference in price). So save yourself some money and buy the HZ-690 directly. (search for "Honeywell HZ-690 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater" - last I looked they were $39.99 vs $79.99 for the HZ-708). I'll let you know next season if the HZ-690's still work. Stay Warm! November 2007 UPDATE. Our 2 HZ-690's (Honeywell HZ-690 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater) are still working beautifully!!! (fingers crossed). You'll enjoy the heat this unit produces. I wish the HZ-708 had worked out better but it seems the same eletronics issues still plague the newer HZ-709 (see those reviews Honeywell HZ-709 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater with Digital Controls) ... better stick with the low tech versions that are reliable. ENJOY!

Todays Concept offers this stuff with condition New, new for:
What our customer's say! "This heater may work one season, if you're lucky", worked ok the first year. turned off automatically after 10 minutes the next year. got a replacement from Honeywell (took them about a month to send me a new one. a COLD month. it worked ok for 3 months until winter was over.) the following winter, it would turn off intermittently, but usually would stay on long enough to heat the living room. this year, today is the first cold day. heater shuts off IMMEDIATELY after turning it on, every time. I have come to the conclusion that this heater is a piece of ----. I still have a warranty. Do I want to wait another cold month for Honeywell to send me a new piece of ----? Probably I'll just buy a Delonghi and call this Honeywell a loss. Needless to say: I suggest avoiding this heater. "708 is BAD but the 709 is AWESOME.", OK, I have the 709 and I love it. No bad smell works great, heats well, does the job. So I bought 2 more for the other rooms in our house. I mistakenly got the 708 model. BOTH WERE BROKEN. The first automatically shuts off moments after turning it on. The other makes a horrible clicking sound, and randomly either ignores the temperature setting and goes to 85 (even when its set at 70) and now randomly shuts off. That said, I bought them from Today's Concepts and they gave me absolutely no hassle in the return. I am returning them and getting the 709 model which I am very happy with. "Shuts off.", I bought this unit in January 2006 and it worked fine the first season (as others have described). In the 2006-2007 winter, it started doing that intermittent shutting off and this season I can't even get it to stay on long enough to heat up. If it does have something to do with a proximity snsor it is way too sensitive and Honeywell needs to let consumers know what it is (no object within __ feet), in case your room is too crowded for the heater. The other problem, of course, is a thermostat that is immediately next to the radiator. But this pales in comparison to the fact the after two seasons the radiator does not work at all!!! I will update if Honeywell does anything to rectify this... "Best electric heater", This is the best electric heater of all, and we've tried them all. When the thermostat is set for a certain temperature, and it gets warm during the day, the heater NEVER comes on. Electric heaters with a dial thermostat always come on, even when it's warm. The 600 watt setting (lowest setting) is the lowest electrical drain of all the electric heaters (a computer uses 800 watts). If the power goes off, this heater doesn't come back on, but this is OK. Be very aware of the electric heaters that come back on full-force when the power blinks. So, this heater does a great job, saves electricity, and doesn't heat when you don't want it to heat. "It's okay", It keeps me warm, but only when I'm right next to it. It's quite and energy saving. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Unit switches off leaving me freezing", I have had the same problem a number of other people have had. The heater works really well at first and then after a few months it begins shutting off suddenly. I have often awoken to a frigid room. I have had a similar problem with other brands of oil heaters. The last one I had, I have forgoten the brand, the digital thermostat started blinking rapidly and the thing wouldn't heat. "Very good heater", I have 3 different brands of oil filled heaters ranging in price from very low to quite high. They also range in features from basic to complicated to use. I prefer this Honeywell to all the others because of the ease of use, looks and features. I have the wood trim model, otherwise it is the same. As with all oil filled heaters this one has 3 heat/power settings and a thermostat. But, I really like the digital temperature display the best. It tells you the current room temperature and what temperature you have it set to, and the watt/power setting in the form of 1, 2 or 3 bars. The 1 to 18 hour timer would come in handy in case you forget to turn it off while not at home. Each time you turn it on, it defaults at high watt and 70 degrees. You will have to reset it to your own preferences. On cold days I would recommend leaving it on all the time and simply adjust the thermostat just as you would on your wall or central heater. This is a mid price heater that is well worth getting. Pros: Silent Easy to use Heats small to mid size rooms Cons: Takes several minutes to get hot "Only last one season", Look for a different heater. These heaters only lasted us one season. We purchased two of the units last winter for our kid's bedrooms. They worked quite well at first and then began to switch off. I searched for a solution only to find postings from other frustrated customers that could not remedy the situation. From what I could gather it seems the problem is with the digital electronic thermostat. The replacement parts are not available making the unit fit for the landfill. That's not good because it was fairly expensive and it definitely should not be a disposable item. "Loud cracking", no smell, very good temperature (we have it in our baby room!), but when the thermostate comes on, sometimes it cracks REALLY loud, sometimes little one wakes up. "Good quality, nothing to complain", I have used it for 3 months. It is easy to use, large and bright display, has no noise, controls the room temperature well, has a timer. Bottom line, i use in my 17 by 30 bedroom, nice and warm 76F all night with gas furnace set to 65 for the whole house. Cut gas usage 40% with help of 2 heaters in house. ![]() |
