"Grind Capability not As Advertised"
Positive:
Grind is very uniform

Negative:
Grind produced would only be considered "medium" size on many grinders and is not sufficiently fine for use with #4 cone filters. Grinder is loud and not exceptionally fast.

Review:
The grind produced is sufficient for a "flat bottomed" coffee maker but will not grind fine enough for use in a standard #4 cone filter or for making espresso. Being a burr grinder, the grind uniformity is excellent even for small pots. However, the noise level is uncomfortable and louder than most other burr grinders.

The overall build of the grinder is adequate. The motor is a bit weak though and strains at times to grind the beans. This would not be a grinder you would use for anything but coffee. The collector for ground coffee is better than some but is still not enjoyable to use. Static buildup is consistent around the ground coffee outlet and a brush must be used to clean out coffee grind stuck to the side of the collector after use. The controls are laid out reasonably well but require frequent adjustment as settings are not remembered between grinds.

If you are not making espresso, I would suggest the Hamilton Beach 80365 One Touch Custom Coffee Grinder whirly grinder instead. It does an exceptional job of producing a uniform grind for 8-10 cup pots and will not "burn" your beans. We have used ours for several months and have been very satisfied with all grinds except for small four cup pots for which the grind uniformity deteriorates drastically.

If you are needing an espresso grinder, I have found that the quality of grind increases consistently all the way through the large commercial grinders. So basically, this appears to be one market in which you definitely must pay for quality. Do not purchase any burr grinder under $100 and only conical burr grinders when shopping under $200. The conical grinders are quieter than the more standard radial burr grinders and are thought to produce a more consistent grind.

If you can afford it, the standard burr grinder at the connoisseur level is the Mini Mazzer -Timer. It's major competitor is the Macap M-4 Espresso Grinder - Black - Stepped Adjustment M4 Coffee Grinder which adds a degree of ergonomics while possibly sacrificing some level of build quality. Both grinders are exceptional.

For the best espresso (at any cost), you would need a commercial grinder comparable to a Mazzer Robur which would cost over $2000 and be suitable for use as the primary grinder in a mid-sized coffee house.

"No problems, works well so far!"
I haven't had any problems with the coffee grinder so far. It grinds well, it's easy to clean, the mess is minimal, and the coffee tastes smooth without any bitterness. The grind seems very uniform, and I like that you can store your coffee beans in the grinder. Of course the grinding is a bit noisy, but what do you expect?

"A good, reasonably priced grinder"
Being new to the world of coffee-geekdom I wanted to try an entry-level burr grinder to see what all the fuss was about before I invested in a higher end model.

This is a good, if very noisy grinder. I do, however have a few issues with it:

First: It doesn't grind completely. It always stops before my beans are ground and I have to cycle it again.

Second: The chute clogs - I think this is the reason that it stops prematurely. I noticed this especially with the fine grind I use for my little Aero Press, not as much when I run a coarser grind for a French Press.

Third: Did I mention that it's noisy? The only shared wall I have in my apartment just happens to be the kitchen wall and, although I haven't had any complaints as yet I'm considering moving my coffee station to the other side of the kitchen to get it away from the wall.

Fourth: It's difficult to clean. The plastic bin is very static-y as is the chute.

All in all though, I'm glad I bought this grinder - it does a good job giving me a pretty even grind - more important for my French Press than the Aero Press or the Melitta.

"So far so good..."
You won't find a better deal on a good burr grinder. For the price, this is a great item. It works very well. The only minor setbacks are: a) that it takes time to figure out the right amount of coffee you need to grind per pot, and b) it is somewhat complicated to disassemble the top at first for cleaning. Both of these issues are easily resolved with a little experience using the machine. Also, we love the design. Aesthetically it's very cute and is not too big or too small on the countertop. Overall, a great purchase!

"Great grinder for the price"
Bought it about a year ago and have had no problems yet. It does tend to grind a little less than the amount of cups you set it at when the hopper is running low on beans, but that's nort uncommon with gravity fed hoppers. Quality of grind is good for french press, drip. I've used it in my espresso machine and it tasted fine, but i'm no coffee guru, so take that last bit with a cube of sugar....

What our customer's say!

"Mine died. Not a good design", The price sure has gone up.... I paid $29.99 for this from Amazon a few years back. It is a nice looking unit. It is fairly loud and eventually clogs and requires a lot of work to clean it out again. Mine clogged again recently and after cleaning it out it won't work. I'm in the market for another grinder and I won't be buying another one of these.

"Broke after 3 uses.", Purchased this grinder for my husband as a gift. I can't review how well it worked because I don't myself drink coffee. However, like some other reviewers I can tell you that the grinding mechanism broke after 3 uses. It is inexpensive for a Burr grinder but perhaps not particularly durable and ultimately not the best product.

"pretty good; required modification", I bought this for $30, and at that price I'm glad I did. Two flaws: first, sometimes beans cease to feed properly from the bean feeder, making it necessary to shake the unit to get the flow going again. Second, with repeated use the unit will sometimes shake the reservoir slightly loose while grinding; this engages a safety switch and stops the half-finished grind. Very irritating! I disassembled the unit and shorted the safety switch so as to make it nonfunctional, and have been pleased with the results (although I can now accidentally spew coffee all over my kitchen if I stupidly press start when the reservoir isn't in place.

All in all a pretty good unit, but not something I'd pay $50 for.

"Barely OK for beginners, Just Spend $30 more and Step Up to Conical", Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RP7MCXOYKVEUU It really takes away from making a good cup. Save your money and go for a grinder like the Saeco Titan, Solis 166, or Starbucks Maestro. It'd be a decent deal at $30, but $50 is sadly high. This grinder is NOT A CONICAL, it's just a burr grinder.

"Don't Know!", Yikes,
I know we are suppose to be PC, and gentle and polite with reviews. I really don't know how to write this.
I wanted to have this grinder forever! I had it for 2.5 weeks, before it burned out! I did the same amount of grinding as I have done in my little DeLonghi. I have had the Delonghi for seven years.
The Ariete people were nice there in Italy. I just don't believe I'll be smacked in the face by the wet mop twice.

John

Read this reviews before You buy...

"high Hopes Dashed", I purchased the Ariete Burr Coffee Grinder 45800 to step up from the old grinder I had been using for years. While it worked wonderfully for a while, the motor froze after just one year, rendering this product useless. Good concept, poor execution.

"Very pleased owner", I've had this grinder for well over a year (note: I'm a heavy coffee drinker, so this thing gets used a LOT) and its been the best grinder I've ever had. The only suggestion for the company who builds it is: Make the ground coffee container out of a nonstick/nonconductive plastic so that the coffee doesn't stick to the container as easily.
I just don't know what else you could want in a grinder ... this thing is reliable, inexpensive and works as advertised. Way more convenient than a blade grinder ... this grinder get all A's.

"Decent burr grinder", This unit works well and it does what it is made to do. I have a problem with the shape and size of this model. It is quite large and it does take quite a bit of counter top space. If you find you have a small kitchen like I do, you may need to pick something else smaller.

"Cute machine", I own this grinder, perfect, perfect. Easy to use, not only do I grind coffee I also use it to grind flaxeed. I recommended it, if your looking for a small convenient home grinder.

"Bad quality, poor costumer service, do not buy!", I Bought this back in May 2006, used it only couple time a week, 3 months later it quit working, called the company and they had promise me to sent a replacement, waited a month then called back, they excused was the grinder not in stock and will be available on Oct 06. So I waited again until end of Oct still nothing. Now in April 2007 I just called again and still in backorder??? I dont believe it, I think they lie to me. The weird part was she want me to sent my grinder back to her now but cannot guarantee when they going to mail my replacment. I dont think so! so I told her that I'm going to call her back next month and if she have my replacment then I'm gonna sent my grinder to her. If not I'm going to file complaint to BBB and FTC. I think I've been very patience waiting for almost a year
