Others say...
"Krups espresso machine - 15 bars!" excellent espresso, excellent cappucino. easy to clean, easy to operate, makes some neat pumping noises and the steam noise is very nice too. Did I mention that the espresso tastes great? with wonderful crema on top? I actually like this espresso better than the espresso I had in Rome this past April. definitely an excellent purchase! "poor seal design, otherwise good." had this unit only a year before the seal gave way. Anytime the seal/water got too hot water would hiss and spray everywhere when making espresso. Too bad, for this is an otherwise perfect machine. "Not as good as expected" When the coffee maker first arrived, it worked great. Just in a month it start to have problem. The water tank doesn't function as it supposed to. I have to apply pressure to make it work. I am thinking about sending it to the repair center. "Great service" This is a great product. Great and speedy delivery. We received the order in three days and the shipping was free. Would consider ordering from them again and recommend this to others. "Krups XP4030 Pump Espresso Machine, Black" I ordered the Krups Xp4030 Pump Espresso Machine because I had owned a Krups espresso machine in an earlier model. I was basing my purchase on a belief that the new model would be even better than the first one, but NO, it is not. The first machine was made in Switzerland and the current one I purchased was from China. I don't know if it was the materials used to manufacture the latest, but it was not acceptable. There was definitely a smell of plastic from the machine and then when I foamed the milk, there was a smell of plastic and the taste of rubber. My husband called Krups and they sent a new foaming nozzle, but this was not any better. I returned the machine today. I read that some folks think their machine is great, but I did not have this experience. I wanted badly for this to work and used it for about a month, but I just was not enjoying the coffee every morning.

What our customer's say! "Very Disappointed", Bought the machine based on Krups reputation. The actual machine does not look as good as the pictures (I know, what does?). Stainless steel parts are thin and cheap looking. Plastic is average looking/ average thickness for Chinese made products (meaning it is a bit on the thin side). The machine is fairly easy to operate, which is good because the instructins are not that good. The coffee tastes good, not great, good. Not appreciably better than my old Mr Coffee Espresso Machine and nowhere like Starbucks. Frothed milk is a nightmare; more on this later. My big complaints are the unit's seal and the frothing device. The seal between the water resivoir/heater and the espresso holder was and is loose. I've tried to adjust the gasket, tighten and loosen the screw holding the gasket in place, cleaned the knife-edge, etc., all to little or no avail. Having hot espresso all over the place takes a bit away from the experience. The second problem is the frothing spout. It is a two piece design: a fixed steel line coming from the heating element and an attachable/ detachable nozzle. Easy to clean. Problem is, the nozzle has a tendency to come off when you are frothing/heating milk. This makes a real mess and is a bit hot as well. This happens about 4 of every 5 times I use the machine. Calls to Krups customer service have not resolved the problems. This is by and far the least satisfying small appliance I have bought. It's not super expensive, but for about $150 you should get a well designed and reliable machine. This is not it. "Great machine -- yummy espresso!", I asked for an espresso machine as a gift and my husband bought me the Krups XP4030. It's fast and easy to use and I love the water tank -- it's removeable and has a large capacity so you can steam away! Great machine for the money. "Bad design", The Krups XP4030 is a major disappointment. While it does make excellent espresso it is not capable of adequately frothing milk. I have been making cappuccino every morning since 1993 and have previously owned several steam powered machines and a pump machine that have all been satisfactory and were capable of excellent frothed milk, this machine isn't up to the task. I returned the first one the day after purchasing it and picked up an identical replacement that was only slightly better. After working with the machine daily for 3 months, it still hasn't produced a single adequate cup of cappuccino. "What a piece of junk!", You get what you pay for, I guess. After buying their $100 combination Coffee/Espresso machine and finding that the Espresso part didn't work well, I ate the $50 extra I paid for that half and bought a $150 XP4030. It was a miserable experience. The instructions were atrocious. The cup seal wasn't good and steam spewed brown water everwhere while brewing. The frothing attachment comes off on its own when it is turned on spewing milk and steam everywhere while bruning my hand. It's basically unsuable and is about to get returned. I've tried 3 times to get this thing to work normally and it's just a nightmare. "Great Espresso and Solving the Clog Problem", For over a year I have been making my daily Americano on my Krups XP4030, and enjoying it. I have two complaints, one is that the steam wand pops off at really bad times, like when I'm using it. It's not a big deal for me, I don't use it often. The other complaint is the portafilter, that stainless steel cup holding the coffee grounds. I use the 2-cup filter, and it clogs very easily. As a result, I can't grind my coffee beans as finely as I would like. A finer grind clogs the portafilter on the very first run. Every other month, however, regardless of the grind, that portafilter clogs up, no espresso comes out and the machine just growls away. And there I am, with a sewing needle, poking out each tiny, microscopic hole, with no Americano, and a big mess in the kitchen. I ordered a second portafilter and now I have two clogged portafilters. Then, a solution hit me. I went to the grocery store and purchased a box of Melita Coffee Filters. Using a pair of scissors, I cut out a few circles sized to fit in the bottom of the portafilter. I wet the paper, placed it inside. I ran hot water through the paper to remove as many of the residual chemicals from it. Then I put my most finely-ground coffee in it and it works like a charm. No clogs, and I get my 18-second pull just fine. Also, as an added bonus, when I knock out the old grounds from the portafilter, the filter paper stays with the it, and I reuse it over and over. In the past month, since I've been using this system, I've used 2 filter paper circles. When my first portafilter clogged irrerparably, I looked to replace the Krups. I sure didn't like the choices out there. The reviews I read led me back to the Krups each time. So, I developed this workaround, and now I can awaken confident that my Americano is only an espresso pull away. Now, if they can only keep the silly steam wand from popping off.... Maybe duct tape...hmmmm....I'll be right back! Home Depot, here I come! ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Watch out for hot milk!!!!!!!", My wife bought me this since I wanted one for a while. At first the machine worked very nice but then came the wand flying off in the middle of steaming the milk. What a mess and I was actaully burned by the milk although it didn't leave a mark. The cost was very good considering the quality of the espresso drinks I made. Easy to use and the instructions were fairly clear. I can see a law suit coming if they don't change the frothing wand design. Very bad idea. "Excellent machine for the price!", I have had this machine for almost three months. Right from the beginning it was easy start to use and made a fantistic expresso/latte/cappuccino. I have had 2 less expensive machines and used my neighbors $600 DeLonghi. Obiviously the Krups is superior to the lesser expensive non-steam pump machines and I think it is nearly as good as the DeLonghi but does not froth the milk as well. I have tried the pods and found them to be a little pricy so I buy whole bean expresso roast and fresh grind it 2 or 3 times a week. I find fresh grinding achieves the best results when paired with a good grade of beans. Usually this translates into about $10 or a little more a pound. This may sound expensive to some but I get a latte that is easily as good as anything from Starbucks or Panera at a fraciton of the cost. "Don't even think about this if you're a real espresso lover!", Ok, so I don't know about you guys, but in some other reviews, they said this machine could make a really good crema on your espresso. Well, but look, I gotta say it could make a nice crema but the crema is FAKE. Why? This machine use the pressurized filter basket. What's that mean? Just take a look at the bottom of the filter basket, you'll see only 1 exit hole, when you pull your shot, the water can't go through the filter basket because of the small size of the exit hole and it will create back pressure, when the appropriate pressure has been developed, the water will go through the filter basket and create the crema on top of your espresso, which the professional barista call fake crema. So this machine will give you a shot with 2.5 ounces of espresso in about only 8 to 11 seconds, which is really fast. For the real espresso, the extraction suppose to take about 23 to 25 seconds for 2.5 ounces of espresso. In the professional machine, the filter basket does not necessarily offer a lot of back pressure by itself. The bottom is a sieve, and allows the espresso to drip out on its own. So, it's important to grind your coffee fine enough and then tamp it with the proper amount of force. The pump sends hot water to the portafilter and back pressure is created by that water trying to pass through the coffee. So that was about the espresso extraction. Now I have to talk about the milk frother. I don't know if other people have a same problem as me or not, but on my machine, when I used the frother to froth the milk and the temperature reach to 80F, the frother just slow down, gave me a lot of water into the milk, after 10 seconds, the frother got back to the speed it suppose to be. I think this problem is like the frother doesn't have enough pressure or something like that. And I ended up with my milk has a lot of big and messy foam. The steamwand is useless either, it can't make nice microfoams for cafe latte. I couldn't do some latte art with this machine. I saw someone's video on youtube, he has this machine too, what he did is he took off the small tube on the steamwand, and he said he cut a little bit of the steamwand to make it easy to froth and has more nice smooth foam, he also said we could take off the whole plastic steamwand, but he hasn't done it. I haven't try it so I'm not sure about this. I saw another video of this machine on youtube, but in that video they took off the whole plastic steamwand and replace it for another steamwand from some other machine, and it really worked, it created a really nice and thick milk with microfoams. The third problem is the smell of the plastic tank, this will make your espresso and milk tastes really bad. I couldn't make the smell go away. And I really hate when I have to drink my latte with a smell of plastic. So I spent my time to write this whole review just want to tell you something about this machine, I don't recommend this machine. Just spend $50 more and get the Gaggia Carezza, which has the professional 58mm diameter non-pressurized portafilter just like the commercial machine, the greater diameter creates a larger surface area which aids in the extraction process as well. With 17 bars pump and a good milk frother, that machine gonna be the best machine under 200$ for the real espresso lover. If you got like $350 in your hand, just buy the Gaggia Carezza and some good grinder like Baratza Maestro, Nemox Lux or maybe a Gaggia 8001 MDF, you'll have some best quality espresso or latte like in a real Italian coffee shop. "Nice looking but...", After 6 months of use I can say that this is not the quality I was expecting. I've trusted in the name, and I was wrong. It was a good trade mark, long years ago. First little thing, there's no way to know about the water's level from outside. You need to remove the tanker to check, it's seems nothing but, it's a real problem each time you need to be sure the pump will not turn without water and smell the silicon burnt. This smell stay in the tanker forever. Don't use the steam first if other people want an expreso, the water will be too hot and the coffee burnt! And now, the best for the end - the sherry on the cake - too many times it's imposible to make a coffee... nothing. I need to remove the filter, coffee wasted, check the tanker, clean the little holes of the filter, dry all the water escaping from the base... I really enjoy. But it's a nice looking machine, I like it for that and the coffees are perfect, really. To see like a no-more 1 year coffee maker investment I think. For amateurs of coffee (expreso of course) I recomand the brand Illy. "Makes Very Little 'Warm' Espresso at a time. Broke after week", You can get a Krups "steam" expresso maker for $45.00 to $60.00 and make 4 cups of hot Espresso at a time. Since a cup of Espresso is 1.5 or 2 ounces a 2 cup shot just isn't enough. And your cheaper steam machine comes with a carafe. When my last Krups steam espresso maker broke down after several years of use I decided to get a stove top espesso maker to save counter space in the kithen. You can get stove top units in 4 or 6 cup (some are as many as 10 cup) After about 7 years of use the old stove top machine was beginning to leak and I couldn't find replacement gaskets. I decided well now I can afford a pump espresso maker and make genuine expesso. So I bought this $150.00 "pump" espresso maker, but was disspointed that you can only make 1 or 2 cups. I don't understand why they can't make the espresso grounds filter basket on the pump driven machines at least as big as the cheaper steam machines. It does come with both a 2 cup and 1 cup filter. You can fill each one with coffee and since it is rather fast at making espresso you can make two cups, burn your fingers a bit to change to the 1 cup filter, and make another shot. Somewhat of a hassle but faster than the old stove top unit that made six cups at a time. That may have been tolerable, but the expresso wasn't that hot. So I had to preheat the coffee cups. Also when you switch over the steaming milk it takes longer to start steaming the milk than the steam machine. This unit costs 3 times as much as the steam machine, makes half as much espresso as the steam machine, makes warm not hot espresso, takes longer to steam milk, and doesn't come with a carafe. But I might have kept it if this morning instead of making warm expresso it flooded the counter with hot water and I never got any expresso. I only had it a week. Back to the old stove top unit with the leaky gasket. ![]() |
