"Utter Disaster of a Vacuum Cleaner"
I bought the Eureka Altima from Target as a stop-gap while saving pennies for a Dyson and it turned out to be an utter disaster. Seemed fine for about the first hour, and then quickly began spewing out as much dust and dirt as it picked up.

So I broke it down and cleaned out the filters. Here-in lies the main problem with the Eureka Altima; it's got three filters in three separate compartments that all have to be cleaned out separately. This includes a small, round plastic filter that is impossible to see, hard to get to, and frequently gets clogged. I'd clean out all the filters, resuming vacuuming, only to have the Eureka Altima start spewing out dirt fifteen minutes later. I spent more time cleaning the filters than actually vacuuming. And even when the filters were perfectly clean the vacuum would still spew dirt, leaving the vacuum itself covered in a dusty grim and the floors a less than desired level of cleanliness.

This vacuum also eats belts like fat people eat McDonalds. Eureka includes a replacement belt with the Altima with good reason. The first belt last a week and the second lasted three days.

Ultimately I returned the Eureka Altima and exchanged it for a Dirt Devil Vibe (same price) which has a single filter system, doesn't eat belts, and doesn't spew dust in the air.

"works if you READ THE DIRECTIONS!!"
Yes, it stopped picking up well until I realized that when you remove the bagless filter cup there is a yellow insert above you unturn and remove, it was clogged with nap from a heavy rug. Also, sometimes you need to open the Hepa filter and clean it out. Then it quit picking up again and I realized I had broken the belt. New belt and it picks up great. GREAT VACUUM FOR THE MONEY. My son has one just like it and has 3 long haired dogs and Oatmeal carpet. Cleans his house great too. The belt is much easier to replace than the one on my old vacuum and lasted almost a year. I keep my expensive one in the closet now as it ALWAYS HAS PROBLEMS

"Horrible Vacume DO NOT BUY"
This vacume is rediculouse. I have had it for less than a year and have replaced the belt twice, it is constantly getting clogged and it doesnt clean worth anything. DO NOT BUY THIS VACUME. I hate it and regret buying it and of coarse Eureka's customer service is horrible, so spend the money to get a Dyson

"For the price, it is nice!"
I really couldn't afford a Kirby or a Dyson so I was looking for something in the $100 range... And I found this. For $70. A lady in the aisle, looking at the same one, told me that she had two before it and loved them. "How good can they be if this is her third," I pondered... Then she said something about her daughter taking one home with her and then her husband took one to work with him because they are such great tools. If you want a vacuum to last you 50 years, get real. You will have to spend more than $70 - $80 bucks. If you need a little something for a few years, this is for you! It has all kinds of "nifty" attachments that come in handy. IF YOU KEEP IT CLEAN AND MAINTAIN THIS VACUUM, IT WILL WORK. IF YOU EXPECT IT TO DO MIRACLES, YOU JUST MIGHT BE AN IDIOT.

"5 Stars For A Bad Rap"
I'm giving this vac 5 stars for the bad rap it's gotten on here. I had the same problems as everyone else, about 3 or 4 maybe 5 cleanings and the thing stopped picking stuff up. HOWEVER, I then read the MANUAL (*sounds of shock and awe from the people that gave it 1 star*) and did the maintenance in the manual and what did I discover? The belt snapped. I also noticed the spare belt was a 50-30 and the belt on it was a 49-30, so a bunch of them probably shipped with the wrong belt, a simple and honest mistake. I popped the spare belt on there and it works alot better than it even did when I bought it. Why don't you people try cracking open a manual once in a while and be a little self aware

What our customer's say!

"Warning Consumers! ", When I first brought this vacuum home, I was ecstatic! My floors were spotless!

Then I had to use it again...and again... and again...

That initial quality? Never seen it since. I have tried replacing belts, changing the vast multitude of filters, dumping the dirt canister, cleaning out the lines for furballs, (I have one shorthaired cat) and making sure there is nothing tangled in the roller. Has it improved? Just enough that I have wasted a whole year struggling with this hunk o' junk.

Every time I vacuum, I have to clean out the filter; sometimes I must do it twice during the same vacuum. I live in a little house where only two bedrooms and the living room must be vacuumed. Yet here I am, twice a week, trying to get this stupid thing to pick up something, anything off the floors and changing the filters at the beginning and midway between vacuuming three rooms is what it takes.

If I don't change the filters, it sprays the dirt behind it at my feet. This is more than annoying, if it picks up a rock, this is painful.

Oh, the "bare floors" setting? I'm not sure what it's for. My broom picks up more dirt between the bristles, and I don't need to change it's filter.

When I want to stop vacuuming, the trick is to vacuum onto the kitchen floor and then turn it off. Then, that lovely pile of dirt that this vacuum ALWAYS leaves can be convienently swept up by aforementioned broom.

This vacuum comes with three filters, one of which is a HEPA filter plus a dirt canister. The dirt canister isn't all that bad for a bagless, except for the size which is small. This vacuum totes the ease and cleanliness of emptying the canister and they aren't lying about that. The only problem is that the first filter, which is a piece of foam, must be changed with it every single time. And that little foam filter IS a huge problem to clean. There is so much dirt everywhere that I recommend doing it outside on a windy day to blow the dust away from you. Keep in mind, you will have to do this at least once every time you vacuum. The second filter, a little twisty thing that you have to read the owner's manual to even know exists, is equally messy and so nasty I would never clean it in my sink, as they suggest.

Now what about that highly toted HEPA filter? I don't know if it's not connected to the rest of the vacuum or what? When this thing vacuums, you can see the dust cloud arise from the air outlet. I have changed it twice in the last year, and at eight bucks a pop, it would have been cheaper to get a vacuum with a bag. While you are replaceing this, remember they recommend replacing the dust cup filter ($12.95 plus s&h) as well every 6 months.

When you buy it, be sure to pick up lots of belts. We have had this for a year and we need to change the belts almost monthly. Luckily they come in two packs.

Now there are two good points to this machine. It does a great job with corners and it comes with a duster. (The duster is supposed to be self-cleaning which I have never been able to duplicate myself; I think the manufacturing is shoddy here) You could just buy a hand vac and a feather duster, the quality is the same but the price is not.

After One Year, this is where I stand:
Vacuum.............$79.99
9 Belts............$12.45
2 HEPA Filter......$15.98
2 Dust Cup Filters.$25.98
GRAND TOTAL........$134.40

Were I to put up with this for 4 years, I would end up paying approx. $297.63, almost the same price as a Dyson! So, honey? If you are reading this, all I want for Christmas is a new vacuum!

"Very disappointing!", I bought my Eureka Altima over 3 years ago when I moved into my apartment. I live alone and don't have any pets, so my vacuuming issues are minor.

For the most part, it's only "okay". As others have stated, you have to make sure that all the filters are clean. If the top filter is even a little clogged, the special turbo attachment won't work. I also have long hair, so that gets wrapped around the top part of the basket strainer.

My biggest gripe is, the wand/crevice tool doesn't stay in it's clip while vacuuming; I am forever picking it up. And for all that annoyance, the wand is too short to really do any high cleaning (and the vacuum his too heavy to lift comfortably with one hand). Also, the special "duster" is another waste of space. Yes, it works fine, as far as that goes, but I end up taking it outside and shaking it out rather than try to get the "self cleaning" option to work. I have also replaced the belt twice since I've owned it.

It is also heavy and awkward.

I believe that for my small apartment, it will have to do. I will; however, be putting it out in the yard sale when I buy my house (or when I have to replace the belt for the third time).

"Worst vacuum I've ever had", This vacuum sucks...and not in a good way. No wonder it was on clearance at Target.

I have short carpet in my bedrooms, pergo in the hallway and living room, and ceramic tile in the kitchens and bathrooms. On ALL of these surfaces, it just moves the dirt around. The brush seems to be way too powerful, and it just shoots everything out instead of picking it up. I ended up buying a broom for my bare floors. I wish I could take this peice of junk back. Oh and the "power paw" is pretty useless as well. And this vacuum is obnoxiously heavy. Not worth the money at all.

"Piece of Junk", This is the only vacuum I have ever known to leave a floor dirtier than when I started. I am not joking, and this is no exageration. After the first use, dirt gets sweeped by the brushes and flies strait out the back end onto the floor. The entire front end gets covered with dust, and you can literally see dust flying in the air. I suppose it might work better if you take the time before each use to clean all 3 filters and make sure the "easy empty cup" is empty. Don't do this inside your house, or you will have dust flying thoughout the air, that you will have to dust up. The "power paw" is a joke, and the "telescopic self cleaning duster" is a gimmick. You have been warned. DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK

"Great suction, too much work!", I have had my Eureka Altima Vacume for almost a year. I have to clean the filters after every other vacuming. I have had to purchase too many of the lower filters, and this gets costly. Recently it started to stink like the motor was going out. I checked everything and everything seemed to be fine. Finally I decided to change the belt even though it looked fine and apparently that was the problem. So if you don't mind putting alot of money in filters and spending all your extra time cleaning filters this may be the vacume for you. I am personally going to purchase another vacume to save some time!

Read this reviews before You buy...

"cheap vacuum for cheap price.", i have had this vacuum for two months now...the first time i used it...it was ok.. right after the first time of using it i had to unclog the hose and take the whole vacuum apart...and have been taking it apart since then just to unclog it ...i am really thinking about just getting a dyson since i have heard nothing but good things about them...i guess its true if you want something good you are just going to have to spend more on it...i wouldnt recommend this vacuum to anyone...

"This vac sucks, but not for long", Horrible purchase, overpriced. Has good suction, but gets clogged easily. The filter needs changing about every third use. IF using the bare floor option, nothing gets picked up and the vacuum shoots all the debris right back at you while pushing it. Horrible. It is very heavy. The hose also slips out of the vacuum chamber at random. This is the worst vacuum I have ever used. Do not buy this.

"Great, easy empty, great suction", I read the bad reviews on the Vac after I had bought the Vac. At first I could not believe I was reading about the same product. I definitely agree with the positive reviews I have since read. This thing has magnificent suction and its so very easy to clean out that dust cup! The first time I used it just on a area rug in my living room that I thought was clean. I could not believe the dirt it pulled out!!!. I also love the long cord for going from room to room. Since then I have bought one for our vacation house too!!

"Horrible Purchase! ", Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money. I don't see how anyone can give this vacuum more than 1 star. Honestly, it is the worst purchase I have ever made and we are going to try to return it to the store tonight. It doesn't suck anything up, the filter continually gets clogged, and it smells like it's burning. I really hope they pull this product off the market. In fact, I highly doubt I will ever purchase a vacuum from Eureka again. It is so frustrating to spend money on something that doesn't even work. I have two small kids and a cat, I need a vacuum that sucks (in a good way!)

"Shockingly Bad!!", After moving to Lebanon, Tennessee late last year, I purchased my Eureka Altima vacuum cleaner in Dec 07. For the first few weeks, it worked OK but then the auto duster failed. I wasn't really too bothered by this and continued to use the machine. I then realized that the dust chamber was always empty. I pulled the various pipes and hoses out and it was packed with dust. The dirt was backed up and I cleaned it out thoroughly, including pulling the yellow filter part out and completely unclogging everything.

I continued to use the machine, thinking this had solved the problem but, no - it happened again....and again.... and again!

The vacuum is only 4 months old and has not worked from about 2 - 3 weeks from purchase. I contacted Eureka Customer Services who advised me to (yes, you guessed it), clean out the pipes and the filters. I explained I had done all this about 6 times and so they just told me I need to take it 36 miles to someone else to fix it.

I am really surprised that this is the only option I have been given. An almost 80 mile round-trip to fix their junk machine! What happened to my 1 year manufacturer warranty? This machine and the company are useless - don't get fooled into thinking this is a cheap alternative to Dyson or the like - It is pure rubbish, plain and simple!!!
